The NY Post has some interesting quotes from Pedro Martinez’s press conference here.
Speaking at a press conference to announce a one-year deal with the Phillies, Martinez made it clear the Mets were his first choice to return to baseball.
“I have a lot of respect for the Mets organization. … I have nothing to say but God bless them, wish them well, I hope they all get heatlhy and come back and compete.”
“I can’t do anything with the hate you have for the Mets fans. That’s between you guys.”

If I was a Phillies fan (shutter), that wouldnt sit well with me. If youre on my team you better ride for it. Too bad his heart is w. the Mets.

Pedro was cool…said he loves the Met Fans and has no problem with organization. Cant say for 2 mill or so i dont wish we had him to start in place of Livan or maybe Nieve who has been really good though. Oh man watching Met classics from 06…So amazing to see Reyes lead off with a hit, another guy get on, Beltran homer, Delgado double. Nady a homerun a few innings later. Geez…What happened!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They scored 3 runs with 3 batters!! Wow I really got numb and use to us scoring nothing this year. i forgot how quick we use to strike and the excitement etc etc etc etc
I want winning baseball now!!

Yeah, good for Pedro. One part of me says, 1 million? Why Omar? The other part says Pedro’s old and already injured, Nieve, Livan, Perez, Maine and Niese will be just fine for depth after Johan and Pelfrey. Now if we could get someone younger who could slide into Livan’s spot AND be part of the team next year…..

By the way, If I were the Mets I would dump Schnieder and try and trade for blocked prospect Jose Morales from the Twins. He would be a great tandem with Santos this year and maybe allow us to save money on the catchers spot next year.

We arent that exciting team anymore when everything was fresh, new, and exciting to us. What a year that was! That year was suppose to be the beginning, not the end. We were suppose to be just starting! I hate my life lol Now Delgado will most likely be gone, this team has so much baggage, etc not the same as it once was only a few short years ago.

Yeah they were suppose to put some more championships up but we at this time havent won anything yet we were so close and now we fix the issue the last 2 years and everyone’s injured.
I know Im not delivering breaking news here but every once and a while it just gets so depressing on how close we were to putting a little dynasty together or at worst making the playoffs lol

Yeah, and maybe I am putting my ridiculous optimist hat back on here, but if we make a couple of good moves in the offseason, and Reyes and Beltran return healthy, why can’t we still be really good for the next few years?

Shhhh, no logic.
I know winning the WS is the only thing that counts, however, for 3 straight years we have been either in the playoffs or with a chance of making the playoffs in the last series of the year. We have failed miserably in 2/3 however, we are the only team during that time that has been that competitive.

Yes sir, I totally agree….and this would all be easier to accept if everyone was 40 and remembered 1977–1983 as vividly as I do!!
And there is a lot of time left this year too.
We can be better than 2006 next year with a healthy Maine, Ollie, Reyes, and Beltran and a couple more good moves. We already have an ace and a great closer, and a bench that would be very good if they weren’t all starting every day.

Kingman, hopefully our year is 2010 with the good moves in the offseason and no injuries.

I agree mrbill….I thought 2009 was going to be our year, and I really believe it would have been without all of the injuries.
But our core (to use a spiffy new term) is still young and very powerful when healthy.
Johan, KRod, Wright, Reyes, Beltran is a damn good start.

Incredibly cool and classy comment by Pedro.
If he gets shelled, Philly talk-radio will surely use this comment to stir up the lovely Philly Phans against Pedro.
But damn, what a cool thing to say.

Maybe the Mets can trade Daniel Murphy/Nick Evans for Matt Maloney of the Reds, they’re looking for outfielders.

How would Murphy or really even Evans help them in a search for OF?

The Reds have a ton of outfield prospects coming in the next few years (Stubbs, Heisey, Frazier and Votto may move to LF when Yonder Alonso is ready for 1B).
I think they’re looking more for a stopgap type veteran than a kid who needs to learn to play the OF.

Can someone say Gary Sheffield?

Well, that would work for me. But I think I’d like something better than Maloney.
Weren’t the Reds one of the teams talking to Sheff before he signed with the Mets?

I don’t think Matt Maloney is that highly regarded either. Not sure we need to trade guys who could be in the picture next year for a guy who might not be anything more than a depth player.

I guess Sheff, if we turned around and traded for Huff would be a very good option?

sounds good. I’d like to make some moves for some youngins.
Shef to Reds
Schneider to Cubs
Livan to Angels

neither is any of our players, plus Maloney seemed to have good stats based on the article. Either way, they have a plethora of SPers.

I’d be more inclined to take a chance on Homer Bailey in a change of scenery (and with our masterful coaching staff).
