Injury Update: Reyes, Beltran, Delgado, Maine, F-Mart

In a conference call with reporters, Omar Minaya gave updates on various Mets injuries, none are great.

Reyes is considered the closest to coming back and hit off Maine in PSL today, but has not run the bases.  Omar says – End of the month

John Maine obviously has pitched as shown above and should pitch in rehab in a week to 10 days, with no pain.  Omar says – End of the month

Carlos Delgado has had lots of good news, batting practice, infield practice etc.  Omar says – Not before August, likely mid-august

Carlos Beltran is in a knee brace still and the knee bruise has NOT shrunk enough for him to have any activity.  Omar says – who knows, not in the near future

Fernando Martinez had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee.  Omar says – 6-8 weeks, see ya in September buddy.

That is all.

Beltran is the most disappointing because he may and actually is the best all around player we have. I sense he wont play again this year or if he does September. The bruise hasnt gotten better? I mean even if it does get slightly better he obviuously cant play on it because that is what he did earlier and it got worse!!

Its like Reyes and Beltran have these new, never seen before injuries that you cant play on until they are 100% gone! The problem is no one knows anything about them or the amount of time, etc!

Like u said Joe, phantom injuries…lol

      1. Joe R

Its a conspiracy for a number 1 first round pick! Oh wait this isnt basketball

You can’t be serious. You don’t really think these injuries are fake, do you?

Deep bone bruises are long, painful type problems. That being said, still think they misdiagnosed that one from the get go b/c anyone who has that should not have continued playing. Can’t blame Beltran at all for getting a second opinion outside of the organization.

Reyes: Dang, if they had done some sort of surgery at the get go, he’d been back sooner. Don’t know if what he has could be fixed with surgery though. On that note, does ANYONE know exactly what his problem is???

J.J.: this one really kills me. We knew what we were getting via the physical when we got him. So as it got more painful to pitch, whose decision was it to keep pitching for awhile and see if he could tough it out? His or the doctors?

        Just absolutely bizarre….

        1. mrbill

Just kidding re phantom injuries metfan :)

      LOL

  3. Joe R

Figured I would move my post over here….

I mean Omar doesnt tell us anything and i think its because he doesnt know! Isnt a bruise exactly what we have all known it was since we were 3?? A bruise that goes away at least within a month. Since when does it make someone a criple? When Omar will our STAR centerfielder be able to RUN?

Reyes is showing improvement and had a very good day??

Can he run?@!?!?! Working on his accleration?? What does that even mean! He’s not 45 recovering from surgery…IDK I really am dumbfounded

a bone bruise is much different that a boo-boo bruise. Also take a lot longer to heal, and need rest or you wil aggrevate it (which he already did).

It comes from a fall or sharp hit usually, but the bone gets damaged (essentially crushed) instead of breaking. A break might actually be better, since it heals quicker.

hey..its the Joe R thread, lol

      Haha…Sorry very frustrated lol

Any hopes of a blockbuster deal were removed witht he torn material in F-Mart’s leg.

I hate to say it but this kid has Alex Escobar written all over him.

    1. Joe R

Very true…He cant stay healthy at all…ridiculous! Who knows what the hell we have in him since he never plays! Somehow if he shows any promise at anytime we should trade him imo however his value will stink…Ugh

  6. CaseStreet

thanks mrose, still recovering from the Beltran punch in the gut

    1. Joe R

Yup agreed! In a brace and cant run…wonderful Case!

Ok I have to muster up the energy and optimism for at least tonight!! This is suppose to be a second half of fullfilled dreams and the start of a great season we will all be talking about for years to come! lol

      1. CaseStreet

I’ve noticed you on fangraphs, pretty cool site IMO.

    Urgh…not good.

  8. charlie_s

Okay, I’m going to say it. We have two and half months of mostly meaningless baseball to watch. Yay!

The sad thing is last week right before. The francour trade they were saying that fmart was ready to play that night then hes on the the dl now surgery. All these funny things we say about the mets medical staff I’m starting to believe are true.

  10. billydeewilliams

the next time someone suggests a trade that involves dealing f-mart, i’m all for it.

let the kid get healthy…then trade him away.

  11. stickguy

Let’s see, if I had to handicap this?

Beltran is out fo rthe year.

Reyes, 50% chance he coes back at some point, and a 95% chance he reinjuries himself and goes back on the DL.

Delgado? will be back, mid august seems likely, and sho knows what the heck to expect from him. I predict 3 weeks of looking terrible while trying to get his swing back.

Maine should be back early august, and will be dealing, since it was probably 90% in his head anyway.

Wagner I think comes back early August, assuming his return to action this week goes well. Putz? 9/1 is my guess.

So overall, not a ton of calvery help coming.

  12. stickguy

the other thing this means? Omar has to 100% plan on not having F Mart next year. He has to consider LF to be a wide open position to fill, since there is now way he could conceivably plan or hope to have him to start the season.

He has to be budgeted for a full year (or what passes for one from him) in AAA next year. After that, see what happens.

I’m thinking taking on the Rios salary dump might not be such a bad idea at this point.

    FMart= Alex Escobar V2.0

He is no where near ready for the majors and is constantly getting hurt. He will not be a fulltime Mets by next season, and if he is we are in deep sht.

I’m sorry to say it but the longer we hold on to FMart the further and further his trade value drops. I understand he is only 20, but soon we will be saying he is only 21,22,23…. The kid is injury prone.

    1. asod75

I’m starting to agree on F-Mart. If the guy can’t stay on the field, what good is he? And as he gets older, these problems are likely to get worse not better. Yes, Reyes had leg problems early on but this kid has had just about everything wrong with him at some time or another. Get his bat going in the minors next year and start taking offers for him while he’s upright.

So, to translate Omar’s presser into normal language…”we’re screwed!”

    2010, clap, clap, clap-clap-clap!
    2010, clap, clap, clap-clap-clap!

  15. fongy2

Injury Update: All our good guys
still hurt! A few bad ones too!
Now, the great FMart is hurt, Again.
    Omar, says no moves imminent!
    Says”we’re O.K.,we’ll hang in ’til
our big guys get back”(Then)”We’ll be
    15 back BUT we’ll make a run”.
“Our goal is to play meaningful games
    in August, err September”
Ya Gotta Believe! Lets Go Mets!

I was just on mlbtraderumors.com and it said that the Red Sox are pretty much going to eat Julio Lugo’s contract if someone would take him off their hands. Now, in no way do I think Lugo is an impact player or the big bat we’re hoping for, but I think the guy has some value as a utility infielder with some speed a little pop. Would be better than A. Reyes or Berroa certainly. Any thoughts? Maybe the Mets should just wait until the Red Sox inevitably designate him for assignment, which they’ll probably do with Lowell and Lowrie due back soon.

    1. fongy2

      Thats it exactly! If they
      end up eating his contract,
      and he has interest,I’d take
      him the the league min.

      1. wannybackstra

        Uh oh….

        I agree!!!

(everyone duck for the arrival of the asteroid)

    2. trs86

Agreed, we most likely should just wait. Still thinking could we unload some salary in Castillo and Schnieder in the deal somehow?

      1. wannybackstra

Lugo’s got another $9m coming to him next year and a vesting option in 2011 for $10m.

And I doubt Boston would be interested in Castillo. Pedroia has worked out okay for them.

Lugo would be fine with Boston paying his bills. But since he hasn’t even been better than Castillo, I wouldn’t trade for him.
