Mets Notes:

  • Pelfrey survived his all-too-common one bad inning in his victory against the Reds Sunday. He had four 1-2-3 innings, one in which he allowed two hits and one in which the Reds scored three times on five hits, a walk and a balk. The Mets have lost five of his eight most recent starts. He had a seven-inning no-decision against the Braves at Citi Field on May 12. He allowed two runs in the 4-3 victory. Before this season, he had produced a 2-3 record and 5.55 ERA in seven games — six starts — and 37 1/3 innings against the Braves. Brian McCann has a .400 average in 20 at-bats against Pelfrey. Chipper Jones has two home runs and a .308 average in 13 at-bats against the Mets starter.
  • New York manager Jerry Manuel, though, let Pelfrey continue. The right-hander responded by setting the Reds down in order in the sixth and seventh. “I think that was huge,” Pelfrey said. “As a pitcher you want to be left out there to work out of some tough situations, and he showed the faith in me to be able to do that.” Braves third baseman Chipper Jones is 4 for 13 with two homers lifetime against Pelfrey. Jones, batting .330 in his career versus the Mets, had the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning Thursday as Atlanta (44-45) opened its eight-game homestand with a 5-3 victory over New York.

Braves Notes:
  • Jurrjens faces the Mets (42-46), who have lost four straight on the road, for the second time this season. In a 4-3, 10-inning loss at Citi Field on May 12, he surrendered two runs and seven hits in 7 2-3 innings.
  • Despite having one of the NL’s best ERAs, Jurrjens (7-7, 2.91 ERA) has won just two of his last eight starts. The Braves are averaging 3.4 runs during these outings.
  • “He could easily have 12 or 13 wins, that’s how good he has been pitching all season long,” said Braves All-Star catcher Brian McCann. “We just really haven’t been scoring for him.” Jurrjens allowed two runs and five hits over six innings of Saturday’s 4-3 win at Colorado, and he had his first career multihit game, including an RBI single in the second.

You might have to find some other way to start your weekend off right. :)

      Yeah, this is just pitiful.
      Sigh….

  3. sabermetrician

This team is laughable at this point. I haven’t felt this despondent since the end of the Phillips era.

Pelfrey aint no #2 sad 135 mil payroll with 2 #3s and lots of #5s

I still believe Santana is an ace, but I think the rest are 4′s and 5′s at best. This is the m.o. of the Mets though. Have 4 3′s and junk or one solid pitcher, a few 4′s and junk. Last time I recall us having a solid 1-2 was Leiter and Hampton and I don’t know that I’d have called either of them a true ace.

I wonder if this team knows what taking a pitch means

    Lowe———Santana——Hamels
    Jurrjens—–Pelfrey——Happ
    Hanson——-Perez——–Moyer
    Vazquez——Maine——–Blanton
    Kawakami—–Hernandez—-Martinez

I’m afraid we’re third best there…and that’s not even throwing in the fish.

Is it just me, or has pelf’s pitches not had that normal sink and bite this year?

  8. steveo

And pelfrys post game interview goes like this I just didn’t have my good stuff tonight.Haven’t we hear that before to many times

    1. jaded1983

Pelf’s pitches just havent had that movement at all this year. Is he hurt too? Wouldnt surprise me….

    2. gategem

Pelfrey threw approximately 80% fastballs. He lacks effective secondary pitches and really doesn’t have a strike-out pitch. He can’t get by without his best stuff and keep this pathetic lineup in the game. But when he’s on he can be very good and it gives us false hopes that he can continuously pitch that way.

Say we get swept, are we then sellers?

    Who get sold?

    1. gategem

Wilpon sells the ball-club. Hey I can dream, can’t I?

    2. sabermetrician

I think we should sell the following:

      Schneider
      Sheffied
      Nieve
      Livan
      Murphy
(Castillo and Perez if you could find takers)

        Sheffield*

Shame that sheffield broke tonight. I thought they might have someone who’d be interested in him. sniffle…

      2. wannybackstra

Collectively those guys will do little more than stockpile toolsy lower level minor leaguers.

But if one or two pan out in 3-4 years it will have been worth it.

Perhaps someone has enough faith in Murphy to trade us a bullpen piece or a moer advanced B grade pitching prospect.

  10. dentulous

Im not upset or surprised. The season is done. No pitching, no offense, no bullpen. Maybe we get rewarded in 2010 for having to put up with so much garbage. Hopefully Santana can set the tone for the pitching.

The most horrible part about all of this is that this team is built to win now. Santana is in decline (granted he still has a couple very nice years ahead of him, but it’s clearly decline nonetheless), Delgado is wrapping things up, Beltran is coming off his peak, K-Rod shows signs of wear.
The good news is Jose Reyes and David Wright, but are we going to waster their bets years? Now is the time to do something about that.

I wonder if your statement gives some legs (sarcasm intended) to trading reyes? I personally think no, but in the same light as the BJays trading Doc H, it could mean a collective plus for the Mets. Plus, it wouldn’t be selling high.

Don’t recall seeing you b4 nj welcome aboard

          1. njstuckintx

Thank you sir. long time listener, first time caller.

          2. trs86

LOL, nice to know we have those. Feel free to mourn over at the Post Game.

  12. wannybackstra

Anyone else wondering why Schneider is sitting v. a pitcher who has pretty remarkable L/R splits? Since when does Jerry not bend over backwards to play L/R matchups anyway?

    1. gategem

lol I have no idea what Jerry is doing. Worse, however, is that Jerry has no idea of what he is doing.

  13. steveo

Not for nothing guys this approach to hitting is really getting to me. what ever happened to getting a pitch count up.coaching staff has got to go.But for sure next year like it or not will be a rebuilding year.there isn’t enough money to get a first baseman ,leftielder with pop a #2 starter and some good bench players plus a 2nd baseman with pop that’s about 50 million right there and you know payroll aint going up

  14. steveo

Oh and a catcher better start the sale its over

  15. charlie_s

Wow! 10-0. Nice work guys. Way to show up for the second half.
