Game Thread: Mets (42-46) vs Braves (44-45) »
Stve Buckley of the Boston Herald is reporting that the Mets have shown interest in Julio Lugo. (Hat tip to MLBTradeRumors)
According to a baseball source, at least three teams have indicated some interest in Lugo. The teams are the Mets, Cardinals and Cubs, according to the source.

I posted this in the other thread, would you guys consider a Castillo for Lugo swap? Salaries totals are even, just Lugo’s is through 2010 and Castillo is through 2011. Does that improve the team? Rational for the Red Sox is they try and trade Castillo’s contract eating some of the cash or they release him and have the 14 million owed spread out over 2 years instead of 1.

why would the red sox think they can trade castillo? no way do i see aswap like that happening.
this is what annoys me about the mets, teams like the red sox or detroit can admit a mistake and just release the mistake while the mets….

“The Red Sox, who need to make room on their roster for the return from injury of shortstop Jed Lowrie and third baseman Mike Lowell, would have 10 days to either trade Lugo, release him or reassign him.”
Totally different situation. The Sox have a young and cheap guy to replace Lugo, it’s practically free.
To dump Castillo and get Hudson, ur talking boo koo money.

In other more important Red Sox news from MLBTR
Earlier in the year WEEI.com reported that Bay was seeking a three or four year deal worth about $14MM per season. The Red Sox, however, pointed to Adam Dunn’s two-year $20MM deal as a point of reference for the discussions.
Uhmmmmm yes please. Please let him become a FA and send him 4/60.
Omar’s not that smart.

that’s my best fongy impression btw

omar would be outbid for Bay on the open market…but i really dont see bay leaving such a great franchise over a few extra mil.

Great point. He’s in a great clubhouse with chemistry, a great baseball city, an excellently run organization, and is surrounded by a culture of winning. Why would he EVER think about coming here unless we made him a billionaire?
7/17/2009-7:25pm at 7:25 pm (UTC -4)
Well we are not talking about a few extra million. We are talking about 40 million more than what they are currently offering. The Sox are offering 2/20 and my offer was 4/60.

Why? Why would the Mets want Lugo, I mean I guess he is an upgrade from our current backup middle infielder, but isnt he owed an exhorbitant amount of money he doesnt deserve, seeing how he isnt very good defensively and mediocre offensively. This really perplexes me, although I’m not surprised.
7/17/2009-6:50pm at 6:50 pm (UTC -4)
Sadly, with the Mets as currently comprised, Lugo is a clear upgrade and if he passes through waivers the Mets should pounce. While Reyes is out Lugo would start at SS, Cora spelling him and more often Castillo. Would mean the end of the Angel Berroa era, but they make print small enough to note that. Next year Lugo is a $400,000 insurance policy for the MI. Makes too much sense, so of course it won’t happen.
El Duque is available too…

Makes sense? Not in my world but ok. I don’t think hes worth it, even if he is an upgrade.
7/17/2009-7:04pm at 7:04 pm (UTC -4)
He’s not worth his salary. That’s why I said “if he passes through waivers…” because if he does, the Mets would only owe him about $200,000 for this season and, if they kept him for next year, $400,000 for 2010. The Red Sox would be paying the rest.
7/17/2009-7:06pm at 7:06 pm (UTC -4)
My bad. I misread the first time and I agree if he passes through waivers, why the heck not. He is not worth a trade, however.
7/17/2009-7:09pm at 7:09 pm (UTC -4)
I agree 100%, taking on the rest of his $18 million would be ridiculous.
7/17/2009-7:22pm at 7:22 pm (UTC -4)
It’s 14 counting this season right? The same we owe Castillo over 3 years.
7/17/2009-7:35pm at 7:35 pm (UTC -4)
As much as I dislike Castillo he is 100 times better than Lugo defensively and not far offensively. Lugo is not that great. It takes alot for me to defend Castillo but Lugo is really that bleh.
