Post Game: Zzzzzz

Zzzzzz

Zzzzzz

I awoke on my couch, rubbed my eyes and looked at the TV.  The “Espy Awards” show was on.  I thought “that’s odd.”  I would never knowingly watch the Espys.  Then I remembered.  I had been watching the Mets play the Braves.  I must’ve fallen asleep.  The last thing I remember is Elmer Dessens replacing Tim Redding with the bases loaded.

The day began with a big breakfast

The day began with a big breakfast

I got up early this morning.  I had a big day ahead.  I needed lots of energy so I started with a big breakfast.  Yummy.  Then I got started.

Trimmed the trees, didn't hang any stockings

Trimmed the trees, didn't hang any stockings

Spent the balance of the morning and most of the afternoon doing yard work.  Cut lots of branches.  Put down some of that black stuff that keeps weeds from growing, shoveled wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow full of rocks onto it making some paths.  From the driveway up to the deck first, then from the deck to the pool.  It was almost time for the game.

Pizza Party!

Pizza Party!

I ate more pizza than I had since I was in my early 20′s.  Had a few beers to.  Then moved into the living room and sat on the couch to watch the Mets.  I was drowsy and lay down on the couch.  The last thing I remember is it was 2-1 Braves and Elmer Dessens was coming in from the bullpen to take over for Tim Redding with the bases loaded.  I checked the box score and found that I couldn’t have fallen asleep at a better time.  Mets lost 7-1.  Well, at least I only missed a few minutes of “Family Guy.”

Lucky there's a Family Guy

So how much longer till the cavalry arrives again?

      1. Mr North Jersey

        OH GREAT, April Fools Day.

  2. dentulous

I cant think of anything to say…..

Oh yeah, Tim Redding is garbage and should have been cut weeks ago. He should just focus on hunting wild pigs because he cant pitch. WTF is he still around for? What a waste of roster space.

The rotation better get it together and pitch like they did in May, and do what the hell they are payed to do. No more damn Yips and not being able to find the strikezone. Im sick of everyone on this team sucking ass. How about some solid defense dammit?? We know it is a lineup that wont score runs, at least play solid defense.

    what a pathetic season

  3. dentulous

Oh and why is it we stink it up more than usual on national TV? Cant we for once not embaress the franchise? Unbelievable.

    1. njstuckintx

It’s the curse of GMs past…

      Or just bad announcing.

  4. stickguy

Well, Neive likely bein gout probably means 2 things. Neise comes up for the rotation, and redding stays.

They already have to figure out what to do with Livan if he continues to stink.

my guess is Neise in the rotation for Neive, and Livan keeps his job until Maine comes back in a few weeks, then livan to pen and redding goes home.

just might be seeing the full 2010 rotation in a few weeks.

    1. steveo

2010 rotation what’s that going to look like scary!

    2. dentulous

well, that send shivers down my spine. Who knows maybe Pelf can get it together and Maine can go a season without being on DL. I say we need another starter, but thanks to ollies contract, I doubt it.

  5. Kingman 26

Grave, the humor of your outstanding postgames almost makes this historic horror of a season tolerable….

    1. fongy2

      Almost.

  6. steveo

    When will this torture end?

    1. dentulous

      not anytime soon unfortunately.

  7. steveo

Summer is long here in vegas and sometimes feels like it will go on forever. Pile on the mets season and I am truley paying for something I did in a past life.

I think tonight might be it for me
    this season.I’ve lived through this
too many times with this team since
1973.This ain’t getting better tomorrow or the next day AND getting
even a Roy Halladay ain’t gonna make
things better. It really pains me to
say BUT the Wilpons will get exactly
    what they deserve…ALOT of empty
seats all August and September in
    our brand new stadium,Ebbets Field
    errr…CitiField.No”meaningful games”
in September or even August this year.
This is the END of a cycle, like in the
early 90s or 00s.THIS group had a little run and its over.
Stand up Wilpons and show you care
about the mess this has become.
Clean house. From Omar all the way down
    Put aside five guys,Johan,Pelf,KRod,
    Wright&Reyes.Everyone else becomes
    available.Find a real baseball man
to run things here NOT one who’s
agendas puts winning some where down
the order of things, maybe number 4 or
5 on the list of goals for this team.

    1. stickguy

I know I will regret this, but if Omar has winning at 4 or 5, what do you think his top 3 or 4 goals are?

      1. fongy2

        Making sure HE’S in
        TOTAL control! Hence,
        the Henchmen(like that
        one don’t ya)/Spies,
        HE names Coaches,HE/HIS
        D>R>Mafia are constants
        in the Clubhouse,HIS medical staff,certain
        players getting paid
        just to be his eyes&
        ears etc,etc…
        The whole Los Mets
        agenda,if you’re a
        non believer….
        we’ll then you weren’t
        paying attention.,
        His being a lackey for
        Freddy’s own agendas.
        Should I go on??

        1. stickguy

go on. You are on a roll here. I can’t wait for the part where the Germans bomb pearl harbor.

I still am fuzzy on why he wants to do all those other things at the expense of winning. Isnt that the sole purpose, and ultimate measure (meaning what gets you fired) for a GM?

          1. fongy2

            Shame on
            you Dude.
            Wrong
            guy to
            talk history
            with.

          2. fongy2

            You
            injected
            “expense”in there.
            I didnt say that.
            I’m not
            trying
            to change any minds.
            I was
            pretty
            right about this season
            though.
            It’s
            one of those
            “being right”
            that stinks
            though.

          3. stickguy

well, rating winning lower implies to me that higher rated items are more important, and would therefore come at the expense of winning.

        2. Mr North Jersey

Amazing how conspiracy theories are running amok. This is what happens when the ship starts to sink.

Oh and by the way the whole “Los Mets Agenda” which I am afraid to even ask what you mean by it just remember that their is also the

          losdbacks.com agenda
          loscubs.com agenda
          losdodgers.com agenda
          losnacionales.com agenda
          losroyals.com agenda
          losatleticos.com agenda
          losmarineros.com agenda

          and then there is
          bravesbeisbol.com agenda
          marlinsbeisbol.com agenda
          astrosdehouston.com agenda
          padresbeisbol.com agenda

          angelsbeisbol.com agenda
          yankeesbeisbol.com agenda
          raysbeisbol.com agenda

so if LosMets is Minaya’s agenda then he has a monoply on baseball or should I say beisbol.

          1. fongy2

            Who said monopoly?

          2. Mr North Jersey

I did (so if LosMets is Minaya’s agenda then he has a monoply on baseball or should I say beisbol.)

you said agenda, “The whole Los Mets
            agenda”

        3. metsfan4decades

          Los Mets agenda?
Come on, does anyone REALLY care about the race or nationality of any player as long as they’re brought in for talent to help the team?

To imply that Omar will pass up good talent b/c they’re not latino is just, well, crazy….

          1. Mr North Jersey

            thank u

          2. fongy2

            no one said
            he’d”pass on talent”
            You two
            sure do
            read into things.
            AND NO
that phase came to end once
O couldnt keep explainng certain salaries.

          3. Mr North Jersey

dude you need to look at what you write I mean what is one to deduce by

            “HE names Coaches,HE/HIS
            D>R>Mafia are constants
            in the Clubhouse,HIS medical staff,certain
            players getting paid

            The whole Los Mets
            agenda,if you’re a
            non believer….”

seriously dude if u wanna play games ok but if u have something to say don’t beat around the bush and own your comments.

            3 STATEMENTS
            1. D>R>Mafia
            2. certain players getting paid just to be his eyes& ears
            3. The whole Los Mets agenda

What is all this you are trying to say? Agenda for what exactly???

          4. fongy2

That,THAT was part of his agenda.

            is that not what happened?

          5. Mr North Jersey

            “that”, again being vague.
            “that” what?
“Agenda” what do you mean by Los Mets agenda exactly???

even after u nap u still can’t say what u mean.

I fear you really don’t know what you wanna say better to be vague and mysterious.

          6. metsfan4decades

I agree. Since there is no such thing as ‘Los Mets Agenda’, throwing that buzz phrase out there could take on all kinds of connotations.

Fongy: if you don’t like what we ‘guessed’ as to what you meant by that, then just spell it out.

  10. metsfan4decades

At least Grave’s after game posts give me something to look forward to…

Man, this is just beyond comical.
And can somebody tell me why Redding came in for Nieve? Was there any doubt whatsoever how that was going to work out?

Get the broom out and it’s not to sweep a series – it’s to clean house in this organization. Let’s start with the medical staff first b/c you always want to throw out what smells the worst. The only thing we SHOULD see left standing next year is some of the players. But I’m afraid that’s not how this is going to go down….

    1. stickguy

Redding had to come in. He is the emergency long/mop up man in the pen.

And you know Jerry has to save his pen guys for his traditional 4 guys in 1 inning parade.

    2. steveo

It will go like well we need a corner outfeider an a maybe starting pitcher and that’s it,and the excuse will the injuries ohh omar .

          And HE’S a yankee fan.

          1. gategem

At least he roots for a team that will be in the playoffs.

          2. Mr North Jersey

            Ouch! Low Blow.
            :)

          3. stickguy

but they are still the yankees. That would be like rooting for the taliban just because you thought they were winning!

    3. metsfan4decades

Ha! Glad you found a way to compensate for what is this 2009 NY Met season.

Not watching though is not an option I would consider. It just would not be spring and summer unless I was watching some NY Met baseball.

Good thing though the quality of my life is not dependent on them doing well or not. But oh, how much more fun my summer would be if they actually were competing…..

      1. stickguy

but, that is what being a true fan is all about. The journey, not just the destination.

besides, if you went bandwagoing, how would (and where) would you know to jump on?

        1. gategem

It’s more important to know when to jump off. The Bandwagon was an old MGM musical and quite entertaining. Something that I can’t say about our beloved ball club.

          1. stickguy

well, we will miss you around here. Good luck with your new team, whichever that one is.

  12. stickguy

Well, jst becasue they kinda aren’t doing too good right now, and this season appears to be a washout, is no reason not to watch.

THey ae still th eMets, and watching a games is still the best way to spend a few spare hours.

And if more fickle bandwagon jumpers jump back off, then thee will be more seats available for the die hards. Not that I will be going amy more often, being short of funds and overly far away (but, if any CEO wants to pass along the behind the plate seats, I wil be happy to sit in them fFOr free, of course).

ANd before you know it, the season will be over, and you will start missing having baseball around, get sucked into the hot stove (not literally, I hope), and get all worked up for opening day.

And, every team starts in 1st place again.

So, hopefully whoever is in charge of picking up the pieces of the season does a good job in the off season (more offense please), and they manage to stay at least average healthy again.

Maybe going into a season without any expectatins, and maybe without the ugly attitude of way too many fans (hostility is just not any fun), will be what they need to finally get over the top.

And I disagree with Fongy, in that while this might be a dismal year, it is not the end of any era. They are just as likely to be good next year as bad.

Now, Omar should sell off a few spare parts before the rest get hurt too. Think anyone will take Livan?

    1. fongy2

      By era,I’m not saying we’re
      gonna turn into the late70s
      teams BUT for THIS group,
      its over.

      1. stickguy

by group, I assume you mean the “core”. Delgado is gone anyway, so that really leaves Reyes, wright and Beltran (unless you are including Santana as done too).

I’ll just disagree that it is OVER for those guys. I think they might have a few more years left in them.

Assuming, of course, the supporting cast gets beefed up.

    2. gategem

Who will you root for when the Yankees play the Phillies in the WS?

      1. stickguy

neither. You just ignore the whole thing and pretend it never happened.

although if forced to choose, I myself would pick the yankees, but only because I live just outside Philly, and I wouldn’t have to put up with obnoxious yankee fan!

  13. fongy2

    Elvis has left the building!

    1. Mr North Jersey

Sleep well.. rest is good and probably much needed.

  14. gategem

I realize that most fans as well as media types seem to believe in going with your gut in making baseball decisions (aka pulling it out of your rear). They believe that decisions based on stats and intelligence should be avoided at all costs. However, for those with a smattering of interest in stats I present this article from “amazin’ avenue.”

“A Double Dose Of Jerry Manuel Fail
by JamesK on Jul 19, 2009 9:15 PM EDT in Commentary

A post like this could be made for just about every game. It’s getting old at this point, but it’s still worth documenting all the basic managerial mistakes Jerry Manuel makes.
    1. Both yesterday and today, Angel Pagan led off the game with a base hit. Yesterday was a single, today a double. Luis Castillo, who has the 3rd highest OBP of anyone on the active roster and is hitting .341 in July, sacrifice bunted Pagan to the next base on both occasions. He squared around, leading me to believe a sacrifice was his intention rather than a base hit. The order to sacrifice likely came from the dugout. Sacrifice bunting is a dumb play in almost all situations. It’s especially ridiculous in the first inning of a game. Here are the run expectancies for the pre-bunt and post-bunt game situations from yesterday and today, according to Baseball Prospectus’s Run Expectancy Matrix:
    Situation Expected Runs
    Runner On First – 0 Out 0.88
    Runner On Second – 1 Out 0.70

    Situation Expected Runs
    Runner On 2nd – 0 Out 1.11
    Runner On 3rd – 1 Out 0.96

In both situations, the Mets were worse off because of the sacrifice bunt. Pagan scored in neither instance but that is beside the point. This non-stop bunting strategy is not “playing the game the right way”, despite what Jerry thinks or what the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball announcers say. It hurts the offense and it’s amazing that seemingly no one in the Mets multi-million dollar enterprise realizes it.
    2. I’ll keep this one simple. Brian Schneider had the 4th best wOBA of anyone in tonight’s starting lineup. His projected rest of season wOBA according to ZiPS was 3rd best. So where did he bat in the lineup? 8th, naturally. Stuff like this irks me more than Tim Redding’s walks or Jeff Francoeur’s OBP. It’s not rocket science that a manager should try to maximize plate appearances for his best hitters. In fact it’s kindergarten level math, which Jerry continues to fail.”
