Mets in the Papers

Get your morning dose of Mets in the Papers.

Brian Costa, “NY Mets are reluctant to give up prospects needed to pull off major trade”

“We will look for outside help the way we did right before the break,” Minaya said. “It may be small guys. A lot of times, it’s going to be guys that might not be doing good with other clubs. But we’re going to have to do it to find a way.”

Jack Curry, “For the Mets, Two Votes of Confidence”

The good news, at least for Minaya and Manager Jerry Manuel, is that Jeff Wilpon, the team’s chief operating officer, had told them over the last few weeks that their jobs were safe this season. As the injury-ravaged Mets began free-falling, Wilpon reached out to both men to assure them that they would not be sacrificed.

Chris Hine, “Murphy’s Aggressiveness Pays Off Late for the Mets”

Mets Manager Jerry Manuel says first baseman Daniel Murphy can be a little too aggressive in the field. As a result, Murphy has been prone to mistakes as he adjusts to playing first. On Monday, that aggressiveness resulted in an error for Murphy, but it also resulted in a potential game-saving play in the eighth inning to help secure a 6-2 victory against the Washington Nationals.

Bart Hubbuch, “Livan Hernandez Bounces Back; Jeff Francoeur Breaks Out in Mets Win”

While the Amazin’s were jumping on a rookie starter making his big-league debut, Hernandez was doing what he seems to do best — beat Washington — in a 6-2 win at Nationals Park.

Bart Hubbuch, “Thigh Tear KO’s Nieve Six Weeks”

The Mets’ disabled list is back to nine players after starter Fernando Nieve was sidelined for at least six weeks yesterday by what the team says is a torn muscle in his right thigh.

Bob Raissman, “Analyzing Jerry Manuel’s tactics is funny business”

Seriously, though, the reality is that Manuel will be the front man, the organization’s mouthpiece, for what appears to be two months of misery. Unlike GM Omar Minaya, Manuel can’t hide under a desk. He is out there. What Manuel says, how he says it and how it gets interpreted will affect his job security.

William C. Rhoden, “Hot Seat Cools, but Problems Stay the Same”

But Minaya has to find a way to rediscover the hunger that put him on the map in the first place, and instill that fire in his team. That hunger defined him as a baseball man. Remember, as baseball’s first Hispanic general manager in 2002, Minaya inherited mission impossible: the greatly disadvantaged Montreal Expos, a team being run on a virtual shoestring by Major League Baseball.

Adam Rubin, “Sources: Omar Minaya’s Job as Mets GM Not Safe Despite Contract”

Still, sources have indicated to the Daily News that Wilpon’s view of Minaya clearly has shifted. A source recently told The News that Minaya’s three-year extension, which runs through 2012 and is believed to be annually worth $1.1 million, would not be an impediment to jettisoning the GM after the season.

Adam Rubin, “Mets GM, Omar Minaya, Likely to Wait on Acquiring Julio Lugo”

The Mets are unlikely to trade for Julio Lugo because they’d be on the hook for roughly $13.5 million in salary, but a source in regular contact with Red Sox management reiterated Sunday that he fully expects Omar Minaya will sign the infielder when he becomes a free agent, which may take a week.

Richard Sandomir, “National TV Is No Place to Watch the Mets Suffer”

But national TV is the wrong place for the 44-48 Mets, as will probably be proved when Fox carries their games against the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 29 and the Philadelphia Phillies on Sept. 12. ESPN is locked into a Sept. 13 Mets’ date in Philadelphia, creating a deadly Saturday-Sunday package of unamazin’ baseball to set your snooze button to.

Mark Selig, “Mets Playing Waiting Game with Sheffield”

Manager Jerry Manuel had been hopeful that Sheffield, who has been out of the lineup since leaving Friday’s game with right hamstring cramps, could be back in the Mets’ starting lineup as early as Tuesday, against the Nationals.

Mark Selig, “Minaya Discusses his Status, Trade Stance”

Minaya did say this when asked whether the Mets were going to be buyers or sellers: “Are we buyers? We’re going to continue to talk to different clubs,” he said. “If we have the opportunity to improve the club, does that make us buyers? Yes. We’re going to continue to talk to clubs.”

Joel Sherman, “Omar: Jerry and I Told We’re Safe”

“[Wilpon] wanted to let us know that those things being written, don’t worry about that,” Minaya said from his suite at Nationals Park in Washington, where he watched the Mets beat the Nationals, 6-2.

    Mets on the radio:

Francesa says he “went to the horses mouth” and “this deal was never offered according to the Mets” regarding the rumored deal for Halladay from yesterday.

    1. Joe R

Yeah you think they would say yes lol

      1. Joe R

Im not saying it was offered or it wasnt, but to believe with everyone killing Omar for not making this trade, with Francesa ready to call for Omar’s firing, do you really think the Mets FO is going to say yes we turned it down??

Not sure I would go as far as Francesa is going with give them anybody but he makes a great argument and I cant help myself from getting excited thinking of the possibilty of throwing that 1-2 punch!! We are only 6.5 back in the wild card and we play all those teams pretty much.

Ive said Im looking for something to make me believe in the rest of this year, and Im fine if they dont do anything, but Halladay would surely get my juices going!

        1. GravediggerHebner

The whole topic is a slippery slope because to comment on another team’s players is tampering. But like Case (I think it was him) brought up sometime in the last 18 hours or so, who do we believe:

Jon Heyman, sportswriter who says it happened

          or

Keith Law, former member of Toronto’s front office and current ESPN employee who says it never happened.

          1. Joe R

Who knows….No one does! Maybe not even Heyman or Law. Both those guys have sources as well. Sources have agenda’s. Ppl have axes to grind. etc,etc

          2. dirtysanchez

lol we will drive ourselves crazy trying to figure out who said what. Bottom line is the Mets are not going to get halladay and if they had teh chance with that pacakge to get him, omar should be fired.

          3. Joe R

Amen…anyway cant wait for Heyman’s version hahaha

          4. dentulous

nice short, sweet and concise summary Dirty!

          5. mrose

i completely disagree that if he had the chance with that package than he should be fired..but thats me

  2. dirtysanchez

you have been doing great with this stuff case..well done

well good news is the phillies seem to have took the foot off the gas in regard to halladay.

    1. CaseStreet

thanks dirty, I owe it all to SportSpyder.

  3. Joe R

How great would our lives be if every 3 days or so we got to watch Halladay and Johan battle for the Cy Young lol…We would be lucky fans! Im almosty ready to say sell our whole farm system!! haha

  4. dentulous

well, more and more people are saying that the offer was never made, so cant kill omar. But man, if it was..hahaha.

    I hate John Heyman.

    1. Joe R

Haha…I know but how great would Met pre-game be knowing we got him!! I would be so rejuvenated!!

      1. dentulous

I would love Omar for life. Oh well, back to reality.

    2. CaseStreet

Fatso says Jon will be on the show today, so hope we get the real story.

      1. Joe R

I hope he says its true so I can bash Omar til next spring training and feel good about myself lol We all know blaming someone is fun…

        1. mrose

i don’t get how it makes sense to give up four of our only prospects left for plugging a hole that isn’t as bad as no one else on the team being healthy and just leaving other holes this off season and beyond, plus Halladay is gonna need a contract extension

          1. mrose

let me clarify, with the contract extension talk… Kinda like the johan deal, if they do that for Halladay, I want a window to get a deal done

          2. dirtysanchez

only reason i think it should be a no brainer is the talent that is even below the ones that have been mentioned. We have alot of young talent that can replace the talent we are giving up for halladay
            niese-holt
fmart-wilmer(i know he is “ss” but they say he may eventually move to the OF)
            Mejia-havens
bobby parnell-kunz(or many middle relief guys)
IDK…just seems like a relativly low list of talent for aquiring the best pitcher in baseball imo

          3. Joe R

Its a no brainer however u slice it.

  5. mrose

off-topic: obnoxious thing of the day, a co-worker coming over, and leaning on my cube while complaining about her day (which isn’t as bad as she makes it) and I just nod my head and contiune to comment on here. THEN she sits there speachless for 2 minutes..
    AWKWARD!

    1. dirtysanchez

      hahaha

    2. GravediggerHebner

There’s probably some snappy dialogue from the movie “He’s just not that into you” that would come in handy. If she comes back see if you can steer the conversation this way:

Anna: You have an ass that makes me wanna dry hump!
Ben: Did you just say ‘Dry hump’?
      Anna: Yep.
Ben: I think I just fell in love.

      1. CaseStreet

I’m ashamed to say I kind of liked that movie. Don’t tell anyone okay!

        1. GravediggerHebner

          I’ll never tell.

I found a line from “When Harry Met Sally” that is much more appropriate for MRose’s awkward silent moment anyway:

Harry Burns: It is so nice when you can sit with someone and not have to talk.

          1. CaseStreet

            perfect

          2. mrose

            that is much better.. lol

  6. There's Always '09

Glad Omar passed on this deal. No need to mortgage the future when we are on the brink of being out of this race and no guarantees we’ll be competitive next year…espicially if Beltran is still out.

    1. dirtysanchez

But its a move that can help out for next year as well. Now omar will have a #1 and #2 pitcher and he has more flexability to get offense imo. Instead of looking for another pitcher next year, he would go into 2010 with
      halladay/johan/pelf/maine/perez
      rotation problem solved

Its a move that can help this year and next. I can see why poeple say its mortgaging our future but we have talent that can replace what we gave up.

      1. gipperpdx

        I agree with Dirty – is a no-brainer for 2010 as well.

      2. DNDJohan aka kistics

        I think he’s being sarcastic….. at least I hope….

    2. Joe R

Its a no brainer imo even if it was 50/50 we sign the extension for him. Please first off Delgado and Wagner are coming off the books. We would have the money if we wanted to resign. Mortage the future? So by giving up FMART because the rest of the guys are mediocre(if they even make the big time) our future is gone lol. DO you know what I dont. Is Fmart going to be a superstar?? All i know is he was suppose to be our OF for 2010 and he’s still 2 years away because he cant stay on the field!!! He didnt hit when he was up here and i know he’s 19 but the point is these are all unanswered questions. You ask whats not an unanswered question?? Ok..I will answer. We would have the best 1-2 punch in baseball, in a pitchers park, with players that are in their prime. Sounds like a winning recipe to me.

      1. Joe R

Oh and did I mention it would stop the Phils from being the favorites for the next couple of years. They would have a pretty damn good 1-2 punch too

        1. Joe R

Oh and did i mention. Holt, Meija,Thole are our best prospects not those guys. So its without debate, its a no brainer and pretty close to one even if you had to throw one of those guys into it.

      2. There's Always '09

If you “know” he is 19, then explain why he is 20 :-)

I was being serious. I don’t like the idea of giving up the entire farm for a player that isn’t going to help us win this year as well as next. In that scenario, it’s basically a rental.

Would I have said yes to this deal two weeks ago? Absolutely!

  7. GravediggerHebner

I have no idea who Thomas Hill is, but he is a contributing writer at “Bleacher Report” and he suggests that an offer of Eddie Kunz, Bobby Parnell and Mike Pelfrey would ‘perhaps…get it done.’

I doubt it, but to be fair to Mr. Hill he was pretty pessimistic about it himself.

    Here’s the article link:

ill be going on with mike francesa at 4:05 p on wfan in nyc. bracing for more halladay talk.

    1. GravediggerHebner

Here’s how I see it unfolding:

Heyman’s coming on, and leaning on Francesa’s cube while complaining about his day (which isn’t as bad as he makes it) and Francesa just nod’s his head and continues to comment on the air. THEN he sits there speechless for 2 minutes..AWKWARD!

      1. CaseStreet

Then Fatso says, “You have an ass that makes me wanna dry hump!”

  9. DNDJohan aka kistics

    GET HALLADAY!!!

Who’s FMart, Parnell, Niese or Tejada? Of the 4 guys, who will have as much of an impact as Halladay??? IN THEIR ENTIRE CAREER???

If Omar said NO to this deal, I would hate him. This move will be up there with the Kazmir move.

    2. dirtysanchez

lol one hr and your a clean up guy for the mets lol

  11. DNDJohan aka kistics

Do you guys think the Mets are in real bad financial situation?

Maybe that’s why Omar is not trading for big name players or Halladay. If that’s true, he’s not signing any big time FA this offseason. Shucks.

    1. dirtysanchez

its possible..especially if that 700 mil is accurate

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

I heard on ESPN Radio that the Mets maybe in financial trouble. Not only Madoff’s situation but Wilpons are in the business of Real Estate. So…. Crap.

Maybe they will sell the team?

    2. CaseStreet

i was thinking any big trade would put them above their budget. though the line at Shake Shack would lead you to believe otherwise.

  12. Mr North Jersey

Anyone listening to Heyman on the WFAN?
Basically saying Mets are a bunch on Liars.
Sounds very argumentative about how good are the Mets this year.

    1. metsfan4decades

Yeah, and this interview should get the collective Met fan base all riled up again. Everyone pretty much let it go b/c all reported the Mets said it was false.
Now, we’re hearing it absolutely was a legit trade offer. And the Mets said, no thank you.

This ought to endear most Met fans to the Mets FO, don’t you think?

      1. Mr North Jersey

Well I ‘ll tell you who is to say that Heyman is right he could have been lied to also his source could have told him this for soome ulterior motive and Heyman was played.

What is Heyman going to do say maybe his source was not right he will be a laughing stock.

        1. metsfan4decades

I agree. Like I said below, we’ll probably never know the truth on this one.

  13. metsfan4decades

Interesting…Heyman is adamant that trade offer was valid. Said the Mets were obligated almost to call and ask what they wanted for Halladay. Those 4 ‘prospects’ were the request, Omar said no.

Said in today’s market prospects who will be under control, cheap, for several years to come are considered a higher commodity than 1 year for a pitcher who will cost them about 15MIL next year, never mind the 7MIL this year. And this year, it wouldn’t be enough for the Mets to make the post season – so the Mets deemed it to expensive.

He’s sticking to his story. Said the Mets are very high on FMart and apparently Heyman agrees with the Mets that it’s too expensive. Said Halladay probably wouldn’t have approved that trade anyway.

Said he didn’t want to call anyone a liar but cited Omar lying to the media’s face not 3 days before he fired Willie last year.

Said any team not contending is not going to give up that many prospects. And he said the Mets are not contending this year.

He still thinks Halladay is going to the Phils.

  14. Mr North Jersey

Heyman is not being asked the most important question and that is why is he so sure this offer was made? Couldn’t his source be wrong? Maybe he was a pawn to start a buzz by the Jays couldn’t it?

    1. metsfan4decades

You know that we’ll never actually know the truth on this one.

The final nail in the coffin – and unless Omar becomes a genius over night, this might come back to haunt us for years to come….

  15. metsfan4decades

and Mike F. said if this is true, he would drive these 4 to the airport to get it done. And if Halladay was hesitant to approve it, they should do everything possible to convince him.

Said even though all his sources said the Mets denied, denied, denied, Heyman said they can deny all they want, it was an offer on the table.

MF said he’d do this trade in a heartbeat.

    1. Mr North Jersey

      Oh well “To Be Continued…”

  16. stickguy

I am pretty sure (although of course I am too lazy to check) that one of the multiple Doc posts on MLB traderumors said that the Jays catagorically denied the rumor too.

So, if Omar says he didn’t refuse it, and JP says he didn’t make it, why are we supposed to believe Heymans unnamed source instead?

His backup seems to be a big Joe Isuzu “trust me” deal.

And if you don’t know who that was, you are too damned young.

    1. Mr North Jersey

Joe Isuzu LoL wow, Where is he now?

      1. stickguy

I have no idea whatever happened to david leisure, so I googled him.

looks like in the last 10 years, he has made some odd guest appearances on lousy TV shows, and more commercials, Guess it’s a living!

        Man, I love the internet.

    2. metsfan4decades

Ha! Joey Isuzu…..I think I saw him a few years ago for another company doing those sleazy type commercials.

  17. stickguy

anyway, after thinking about the concept, I would do that particular deal (a risk, but worth it), although I can certainly see the arguements for the other side. It is not really that much of a no brainer for the MEts.

Now, the same caliber package from the Phils? That would have been done already. I am guessing something like Brown or Taylor, Carrasco, donald and a young pitcher to cover for Parnell. Yeah, the Phils do that deal.

  18. stickguy

oh yeah, last poingt (the biggie):

If Omar truly felt it eas a talent mis match, or he has other grand plans (to fill multiple holes), and he doesn’t think it is worth it for 2010 only (2009 being written off), fine.

But, if He wanted to do the deal, but the team couldn’t afford the salary, then it is going to be a couple of real ugly years on top of this one, if they have to trim the budget (payroll, and all those sneaky hidden organizational costs, like int. FA signings).

  19. Joe R

We can afford him. Delgado and Wagner off the books and more. We may not be able to sign another huge bat but I like the defensive approach if Halladay’s name is on the back of a Mets jersey!!!maybe omar knows he is bringing the fences in LOL.

  20. Kingman 26

Again, the idea that Heyman is reliable, hard-working, serious, or totally honest is a JOKE.

He may not have made it up, but he may have overheard it in the SNY studio restroom.

    1. metsfan4decades

      LOL.
Everyone involved right now is busy standing their ground, saying they’ve got the ‘true’ word on this.

Kevin B. on the pre-game stated no names were exchanged, was never going to happen and more or less, the FO made the obligatory call to inquire but that’s about it.

      1. Kingman 26

        Yeah, just watched Kevin B.

Alas, I think we must forget about Roy for now, but Johan dropped into our laps, so maybe in a week’s time if the Jays do not get the offer they want, maybe, just maybe….
