Uncle Sam
Jonathon Niese (1-0) came up from AAA Buffalo on a hot streak. He continued the trend at the major league level, throwing 7 innings of 1 run ball to lead the New York Mets to victory over the Houston Astros. It was quite a surprise to watch them score 10 tonight in support of Niese.

Uncle Buck
The Mets scored 3 runs in the 1st. Daniel Murphy doubled in Angel Pagan, a Jeff Francoeur sacrifice fly scored Luis Castillo and Murphy scored on a single by Cory Sullivan.  The Astros got 1 run in the bottom of the 1st when Michael Bourn scored on a single by Ivan Rodriguez.

Uncle Tom
In the 4th inning the Mets got that run back when Sullivan scored on a double play ground out by Alex Cora. The following 2 innings were a virtual offensive explosion for the Mets.

Uncle Julio
In the top of the 5th Francoeur hit a monster 3-run homer that disappeared into the Crawford Boxes in Minute Maid Park’s left field. It was the Mets 1st 3-run homer since Brian Schneider hit a 3-run shot against the Tampa Bay Rays on June 21st.

Uncle Henry
In the 6th Omir Santos hit a solo homer then Castillo singled to drive in Pagan and the Mets had a 9-1 lead. Wright added a solo homer in the 9th to round out the Mets scoring. That marked the 1st time the Mets had hit 3 home runs in a game since June 9th versus the Philadelphia Phillies.

Unkie Herb
Met closer Francisco Rodriguez came on to get some work in the 9th and gave up a 2-run homer to Hunter Pence which made the final score 10-3.

Yes, I know before anyone says anything to bring me down.
However, IF the Mets were .500 right now they would only be 4 games out of the playoffs.
So next stop is just get us to .500 and lets see where we are. Long road to .500 though.

Nice pitching, Niese. Continuing on the them of TRS above, if we had this kind of solid 7 consistently, even with the anemic offense we wouldn’t be in this sad of shape.
‘It was the Mets 1st 3-run homer since Brian Schneider hit a 3-run shot against the Tampa Bay Rays on June 21st.’
…this about sums up our offense this season, doesn’t it?
Regardless, nice way to spend a hot, humid Saturday night here. Great pitching from our starter, very good defense behind him, great offense contributions from most. And has anyone noticed that Castillo is quietly hitting .299 for the season right now?
Krod obviously does not do well with several days off…..

Loved the ‘Uncle’ theme/graphics tonight. Took me a minute to put that together. LOL.
I’ll bet it felt good to be able to write this post game tonight….

If you would have told me that Omir Santos would not only be our starting catcher, but be +1 on Wright in the power department, I would have made reference to your trip to Jamaica and your use of non traditional tobacco.

Santos was only “+1″ for about 3 innings, they’re even now. Not that that makes it any less outrageous.

found this in the comments on Toby’s mets minors blog (courtesy of a poster named Nick):
highlight video on GCL Mets’ catcher Nelfi Zapata (.313/.384/.500 in 64 at bats) .. the kid is only 18 yet he looks likes hes about 30 (someone actually commented that in the video which was funny)..

Free the man already. He looks like he could be in the show right now, and no one would notice he didnt belong or was so young.
maybe our own little Lebron?

Damn if Uncle Julio doesn’t look like Ollie.
All I can say about tonight’s win is that we the fan base needed this.
