New York-Penn League

  • The Brooklyn Cyclones beat the Staten Island Yankees 5-4 Saturday at Keyspan Park.  It was a big night for players the Mets drafted this June.  P Darin Gorski started the game and allowed 4 runs, all earned, on 4 hits and 1 walk in 6 innings, striking out 3.  Brandon Sage (1-1) picked up the win with 2 scoreless innings of relief.  Sage allowed a single and 2 walks, 1 intentional, while striking out 2 in his 2 innings.  1B Sam Honeck walked and scored in the 1st, walked in the 3rd and singled in the 5th in going 1 for 2 and raising his batting average to .321.  SS Robbie Shields hit a 2-run single in the 1st inning for his 1st 2 professional RBI.  Shields finished the game 1 for 4.  LF Nick Santomauro tied the game with a solo homer, his 2nd, in the bottom of the 6th and wound up 1 for 3.  For more see the box score and recap.

South Atlantic League

  • The West Virginia Power beat the Savannah Sand Gnats 6-5 Saturday.  2 members of the class of ’09 took part.  Joseph August came into the game in the 8th inning as a pinch-runner and scored on a homer by Jefry Marte.  P John Church (0-1) came into a tie game in the 9th inning and suffered the loss.  He walked the 1st batter he faced, then after a strikeout gave up a single which put runners on 1st & 2nd.  He then surrendered the game winning double.  For more see the box score and recap.

Appalachian League

  • The Elizabethton Twins edged the Kingsport Mets 6-5 Saturday.  6 players drafted in 2009 played for Kingsport.  Zachary Von Tersch and Brian Needham both pitched in relief for the K-Mets and together gave up all 6 Twins runs.  Von Tersch came on to start the 6th inning and gave up 2 walks, 2 singles and a double which led to 3 runs while only recording 1 out before being replaced by Needham.  Needham got out of that jam but in the 7th he gave up 2 walks and a single to load the bases before allowing a bases clearing triple that gave the Twins the lead.  C John Freeman went 0 for 4.  DH John Semel had a 7th inning RBI ground out in going 0 for 4.  CF Darrell Ceciliani singled and scored in the 4th inning en route to a 1 for 4 game.  LF Ronald Harris drove in Ceciliani in the 4th with a single then came around to score himself.   See the box score and recap for more.
