Post Game: Grand Slam!

Grand Slam breakfast

Grand Slam breakfast

It wasn’t quite separation of church and state, but the New York Mets players and coaches were able to keep their on-field performance separate from their front office’s off-field disasters for one more night as they defeated the Colorado Rockies 7-3.

Pinch-hitter Fernando Tatis‘ 8th inning grand slam home run was the margin of victory.  Troy Tulowitzki’s 2nd inning 2-run homer gave the Rockies the early 2-0 lead.

Jeff Francoeur continued his hot Met performance with a solo home run to cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the 4th.  Clint Barmes got that run back with his own solo homer in the top of the 5th.

The Mets found their comeback before it was too late.  In the bottom of the 6th Daniel Murphy singled in the en fuego Luis Castillo and Cory Sullivan’s sacrifice fly plated David Wright to tie the game at 3 and set the stage for Tatis’ heroics.

3 wins in a row? A grand slam? No errors? Ollie got out of there before he could do major damage?
Were these our NY Mets tonight? Woo-Hoo!!

    Winning is so much fun.

Tatis = Superman tonight. Honestly, did anyone thought he would get it done? I know my fellow fans and I in the Dugout tonight were all eating our words…

And I have absolutely no idea what Ollie was saying when they interviewed him tonight on Sports Night. Something about the humidity and him making ‘my’ pitches?

If by some crazy chance ,this team
somehow gets back in it and a few
more “El Gordo Loco Tony” stories
leak out,it will create an interesting
    situation with Omar.If another team
    gets the wildcard w/86or87Wins and
we make a push BUT finish 5/6 games
out,Was Tony THAT much of a cancer
AND if so,why didnt Omar do something
    earlier?However,he did(finally)do
something AND despite the insane amount of injuries, they didnt really
quit, fell to sleep on the job for a
    while maybe but didnt quit.
AND…then how do you fire Jerry?
So heres thinking he may well do
    something.Like I said earlier,lets
just hope its not an FMart for Mags
Ordonez OR the farm for VMart&Lee.

I can see what you’re saying but in my opinion it’s a stretch to say “if they make a run but fall short was the timing of Tony B’s firing responsible for them falling short.”

Bernazard’s behavior has clearly had an effect on the organization as a whole, but I think in terms of showing up in the major league team’s W-L column it’s way down the list of things, at least in my opinion.

Especially considering the 1st 2 wins of this little 3 game winning streak came when he was still employed. It’s just not a clear line of demarcation in my opinion.

Repeat after me.I will not be fooled by this team. I will not be fooled by this team. Now say that ten times with your eyes wide open.Ok now back to reality

I hear you. I am not prepared to believe that it will last long enough and be strong enough to completely resurrect the season, especially considering the roster is still quite thin, but…

I am a believer in the concept that exchanging the sullen Church for the upbeat Francoeur has had a positive effect on the roster. The mere placement of an smiling happy guy into the group, at least in the short term, seems to have uplifted the room and all those in it.

I almost spit out my water when I saw Francoeur on a post game interview. Usually I see David Wright. I’m obviously not in the locker room so I don’t really know, but from the outside looking in it seems to me it’s a much happier place since that trade. I’m sure the 7-6 record and the 15 RBI in those games help too.

I disagree. The demeanor of one marginal player, no matter how sullen and not much was leaked from the clubhouse that Church’s presence was depressing the team, cannot have that much of an effect on the attitude of the team. It’s been Frenchy’s offensive contributions and the winning that have affected the clubhouse. The clubhouse wasn’t upbeat in Washington and Frenchy was with the team.

I hear you. That’s why I also said “I’m sure the 7-6 record and the 15 RBI in those games help too.”

My comment was partially my belief and partially a jab (apparently too well cloaked) at the proponents of “grit.” Anyone who promoted grit as a necessary ingredient sure as heck better also believe in “upbeat” or they’re just wildly inconsistent and need to look in a mirror. I’m not saying you did this Gategem, I mean those in general who were insistent on grit.

Fred Wilpon should find a position in the Mets hierarchy for Jeff as the Mets good will ambassador to Outer-Mongolia.
