Post Game: Things To Do With Denver When You’re Dead

Warren Zevon wrote and performed a song called Things To Do In Denver When You’re Dead on his 1991 album Mr. Bad Example. Roughly 4 years after the song was recorded, a movie with the same name was made.  Spoiler Alert: In the movie a criminal who has gone straight’s business has failed and he has to return to crime to make some money.  The particular crime he is supposed to commit goes horribly wrong and he and those helping him commit it are faced with their death as retribution.  The movie is largely the tale of what these people do when faced with their impending death.

The New York Mets 2009 season has gone horribly wrong and they’ve been left for dead.  With their death all but certain, they’re enjoying a resurgence of sorts against the Colorado Rockies who happen to play in Denver.  Yeah it’s a stretch but it’s all I’ve got tonight.

The Mets took the lead they would never relinquish in the 2nd inning.  Jeff Francouer, recently acquired by the general manager with a plan Omar Minaya, has been a revelation and the trend continued with his RBI single.

Luis Castillo continued his resurgence with a 3rd inning RBI single for a 2-0 Met lead.  Brian Schneider’s 4th inning sacrifice fly gave the Mets a 3-0 lead and gave them 3 consecutive innings scoring a run.  Daniel Murphy’s RBI single in the 8th capped the scoring.  Mets 4, Rockies 0.

Mike Pelfrey shushed the Rockies with 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball.  He was especially effective against Clint Barmes when it mattered most, getting him to pop up twice with 2 outs and the bases loaded.  Pedro Feliciano and Sean Green finished the job.  Feliciano was particularly good, with 3 strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings.  David Wright, Murphy and Alex Cora each had 2 hits on offense, and Murphy started a spectacular double play on defense.

    Cool Grave,
I think that’s the same Pelf pic I grabbed for my blog entry tonight. And yes, your creativity is a true highlight of this killer site. I even made a cameo in the Real Dirty Dugout tonight (when I should have been working, shhhh don’t tell anyone). So glad the Mets are at least showing signs of life. I can’t get too excited until they reach .500, but these last four games have been a welcome change from the previous 1 1/2 months or so of pure misery.

And so far, despite his allergies to taking a free pass (which we all knew coming in), Jeff Francoeur is coming up big for the Mets. 16 RBIs in 14 games and he seems to be in the thick of every rally. For a comparison, Ryan Church had 22 RBIs in 67 games for the Mets. Liked the deal when it was made, loving it now. I know Francoeur will slump at some point, but there’s no denying he’s been a spark for this team. They’re 8-6 since he joined the squad.

I hope the swelling in the hand is nothing worse than just a swelling. Last thing we need is this guy to go down and join our All Star DL team.

4 Wins in a row. On a roll now, boys.

As usual, the theme and graphics on the post game posts are great!

If only we can get an OFer/6th hitter, this team would be set.

I agree case. That should be what Omar focuses on before deadline. The 6th hitter DP’s are killing us….

This is certainly not my original idea, but I have read a lot of speculation that due to Omar’s recent embarrassing episode he will go the extra mile to make a splash by Friday 4:00pm. If he does, the LF/6th hitter thing could be the way he goes. Certainly seems more likely than Halladay.

Somewhere today (he’s everywhere so I’m not sure where I heard this) Heyman said the talk was the Mets were looking for LH relief. That seems about as pointless as any possible acquisition, I hope that’s incorrect.

I was against the Frenchy trade and I’m still not sold for the long term. But there is no denying that Frenchy has been a G-d sent (if it’s permissible to say this in a politically correct forum) for this team and Omar deserves all the credit for making the trade.

I’m hoping this team can keep up the good play and get close enough and stay close enough in the WC hunt until some of the walking wounded return.

I’m not sure how much longer an injured Cora can continue to play on a regular basis so it’s important to determine if Reyes will be back this year or will it be necessary to acquire a SS for the remainder of the year.

One good thing about being dead in Denver is the high altitude won’t bother you. But if it’s just the same to you I’d rather it be a strip club in Vegas.
