“The only thing worse than a Mets game is a Mets double-header.” Casey Stengel

Here’s what you missed on Thursday, July 30, 2009:

As today is the trade deadline, we are all wondering who the Mets will be taking home tonight? (Take Me Home Tonight/Be My Baby – Eddie Money)
Without additional help, the Mets will certainly be headed right into the danger zone. (Danger Zone – Kenny Loggins)
However, if Omar Minaya is able to make a trade for an additional bat or arm, Mets fans everywhere will be in bliss. (Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now – Starship)

    Soo….what do we think…omar makes a move?

    1. oleosmirf

i dont think any big moves are happening. Omar doesnt do trade deadlines…

      1. dirtysanchez

omar never had his job threatened

        desprite people do desprite things…

        1. oleosmirf

Omar isn’t going to trade the few prospects we have for the very slight chance we make the playoffs…

          1. dirtysanchez

i dont think he would either…at least in a dumb trade. Now if you can net talent that can help this year and next, i think he would consider it depending on who they are asking for in return. Those 3 way deals may give omar the flexability to not part with big time talent. Your right though that he shouldnt give up the top prospects that we have for this year. Its gotta be a move that can help next year as we are going to have holes in
            SP
            BP
            C
            LF
            Bench
Also we are going to be power challenged next year with shef and gado both gone. I dont know if theres anything that omar can do but he has got to really think about this.

where does this idea that Omar doesnt do deadlines come from? Is it because no blockbusters, but they rarely happen anyway?

In the past few years, he got Castillo at the deadline, Ollie/Hernandez, and last year (ugh) Ayala.

Not the most excititng bunch, but they were players brought in to fill perceived holes.

and no, I won’t argue if he filled the right holes with the right players!

    1. dirtysanchez

I thought we got ayala on the waiver wire…

        Dirty is correct.

It’s not that “he doesn’t do deadlines” as he clearly does. I think any July trade can loosely be considered a deadline deal so we can add Francoeur to the list too.

What he has no track record (with the Mets) of doing is a big deadline deal that makes you stand up and take notice, that makes you think “wow, this is going to make THE difference, THIS is a BLOCKBUSTER!”

So to expect THAT type of thing is to expect the unexpected.

one of the beat guys (Sherman?) now seems to be BFFs with Jeffy W., getting all the dope about how they think Omar is doing. Latest seems to be they feel is the org. has been going backwards for years now (of course, if so, why an extension?

The other theme seemed to be that this september would decide if Omar stays or goes.

Well, IMO, whether Omar should be fired really should have nothing to do with this september.

They need to evaluate his 5 year body of work, and more improtantly, the health of the organization. The GM is responsible for more than just the record of the team on the field. The minors, the FO, talent acquisition and development, all fall on Omar. As fdo the teams employees in those areas (like, Tony B!)

Omar, compared to other GMs, has been in the top tier of successful (based on the team winning). 3 years in a row averaging 90 wins, in contention in game 162 the 2 years they missed the playoffs, 1 NLCS. Not many GMs beyond THeo and Cashman can really say that. Plus he started with crap.

But, if the team is in turmoil (behind the scenes), and falling apart, that is what he should be let go for. Oh, the COO should face the ax too (think Fred will can Jeffy?)

I’m on the fence here. I’d like to see a move made to remain or become (depending on how you’re looking at this winning streak) a contender. But I also understand holding onto prospects and building from within.

      You’re kidding with this post
      right???

  4. QnsNative718

IMO, if Omar does not make a move, he has thrown in the towel for this team, which is a damn shame considering how a team playing for the majority of this season without 3 impact players has fought the way the did. Theybe been losing but they havent laid down and quit. The last week has been inspiring and if Omar does nothin to bolster that then it shows absolutely no confidence in our boys.

    1. dirtysanchez

But i really believe his job hangs on the teams ability to make the playoffs..so its on him.

    2. JoeR

I believe he’s trying along with all the other GM’s

So after all the optimism felt around
dinner time last night,we wake this
morning having lost a half a game in
    the Wildcard race.Reality really does
bite!Seven teams infront of us,no moves to help and despite Omars continued statements and updates, the
calvary is nowhere in sight AND tomorrow is August 1st.Heres hoping
Freddy,Jeff and Omar get what they
deserve,an empty new stadium for most
of September and a return to irrelevance with the media.
    Hopefully this will expedite Omar’s
    exit!

    1. CaseStreet

Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face.

      1. fongy2

        Huh?!

“Heres hoping Freddy,Jeff and Omar get what they deserve,an empty new stadium for most of September and a return to irrelevance with the media. Hopefully this will expedite Omar’s exit!”

Just seems like you’d rather the team fail, so Omar can get fired. Of course my sarcasm meter is off today, so excuse me if I’m wrong.

          1. JoeR

I’d rather be 4-5 games out and have some hope come late August/early September.

    2. QnsNative718

Daily News Live the other night made a good point that Omar does not necessarily need to make a big trade but go after a Ty Wiggington type player. Someone more adequate than Cory freakin Sullivan.

      1. There's Always '09

I’m not sure Ty Wigginton is more adequate than Corey Sullivan. I love Wiggy, but let’s be real here. He’s not the answer we’re all looking for. He’ll be on the bench when everyone gets back.

If it’s not Halladay, Crawford, Kazmir, or VMart, I’m not interested.

    Lets Go Mets!

    1. There's Always '09

The worst part is, I did a mathematical formula that went something like this: E=Mvc^3*iNR which ultimately equals, “if the Mets aren’t in it, we should cheer for the Rockies”. Then we went out and took 3 out of 4 from the Rockies. So while we are finished, we effectively hurt them bad as well. Awesome.

      1. JoeR

I dont think we are out of it. I feel if we can play maybe .500 ball or whatever it takes to stay 4-5 games out until guys come back we will at least have a chance even if its small.

I almost feel embarassed saying when the guys come back lol. Am I still buying the spin that guys are coming back…

        1. fongy2

          We’re not out
          of it BUT dont
          tell Omar…
          Thats how Kazmir for
          Zambrano trades
          happen.
          If the Giants
          play .500 ball
the rest of the way AND if
none of the other SIX teams
          infront of us
          do any better
          than that….
          We need to go
37-24 just to tie for the WildCard.
          That gonna happen????

  7. steveo

Yes they will be back but beltran at. 75% reyes at 80% delgado at 75% I’m afraid that won’t be quite the impact that we need.
