Post Game: Angel Rids Citi Of Snakes

Out damned snakes!

Out damned snakes!

The New York Mets scored a lot of runs (for them, 5) off the Arizona Diamondbacks, then Oliver Perez and Bobby Parnell gave them all back.  So the Mets used Angel power to re-take the lead and then actually managed to provide a save situation for closer Francisco Rodriguez who took advantage of it.

The Diamondbacks took the early lead.  This current homestand seems to have shown that home runs can indeed be hit at Citi Field.  Justin Upton hit a long solo home run in the 1st.  Augie Ojeda hit an RBI single in the top of the 4th and the DBacks were up 2-0.

In the bottom of the 4th the Mets took the lead.  Daniel Murphy scored on a Cory Sullivan single, Jeff Francoeur scored on an Alex Cora ground out, Sullivan came in on a Brian Schneider double then Angel Pagan gave a hint of things to come with a sacrifice fly and the Mets had a 4-2 lead.  The teams exchanged single runs in the 5th so entering the 6th it was 5-3 Mets.

The snakes tied the game in the top of the 6th.  Parnell took over with a 2 run lead and promptly walked the lead off batter Ojeda.  During the game SNY showed a graphic that a lead off walk scores 45% of the time.  This one scored 100%.  One out later, a ground rule double put runners on 2nd & 3rd.  A ground ball out scored Ojeda to make it 5-4, then a Mark Reynolds RBI single tied the game.

In the 8th inning an Angel answered Met fans prayers.  With the bases full of Mets, Pagan unloaded on Clay Zavada pitch and deposited it into the left field seats for his 1st home run of the season and a 9-5 Met lead.

In the top of the 9th, Reynolds hit a long home run off Brian Stokes making it 9-6.  The next batter walked which created the save situation and K-Rod disposed of the last snake on a pop up for his 24th save and the Mets 9-6 win.

Damn, what a game! Reynolds shot to the 2nd deck was a monster.

Who would’ve thought that on August 1st, the Mets would have Murph at 1st, Cora at SS, Sullivan in LF, Pagan in CF and Francouer in RF. Even more shocking is that these guys scored 9 runs.

    Ya Gotta Believe!

Move Pagan to LF, sprinkle in Reyes and Beltran, the lineup is looking up.

But you are right, 9 runs with that lineup. a most pleasant surprise….

    Love these theme wrap ups!

Great game. I guess it’s fair to say that Citi will give up more HRs with increased humidity, huh?

Listened to Ollie’s interview on the post game. It’s hard to say what he’s thinking about his pitching performance b/c he never says anything different. ‘Getting important outs and making my pitches’.
Jerry said as usual, an Ollie start means he watches from the top step. Said he doesn’t know how much longer you can go with a walk and a hit every inning…..

Kudos to Angel Pagan. Makes you wonder what he can do if he actually plays a healthy full season.
