TRDMB – What Minaya “Really” meant to say.

Yesterday the trading deadline came and went and the Mets were nowhere to be found. Afterward Minaya held a brief minayapress conference to discuss how he spent the day and once again was misunderstood at what he was trying to say. Allow me now to explain what Minaya really meant to say.

When asked was he working on stuff till the last moment?

What Minaya said:
Yeah we did we work on some things till the last moment we just not able to get it done. We had some opportunities to do some things but in the end I just felt that it wasn’t umm, you know I thought that at least what the teams was asking for I felt that you know, we just couldn’t find a match.

What Minaya meant to say:
I told Cleveland that I needed Victor Martinez and would Fernado Martinez get it done? They replied yeah right, and get stuck with the next Alex Escobar no thank you but way to go on losing it in front of the entire country can you autograph this back page of you in the Daily News for me?

********************

When asked is a big part of it (not trading for a player) the anticipation of who you are expecting to come back healthy?

What Minaya said:
Yeah thats also a big part of it. You know being a GM your in a situation right now where you have certain of the players that might be back or may not be back so you ask yourself if you go make that trade what are you going to get for that player and then what happens when the players comes back?

What Minaya meant to say:
The truth is when i asked my my magic 8-ball should I trade for a player to help now or wait for the core to get back? It said “Reply hazy, try again later”.

********************

When asked were the costs too high with the prospects for the players he was interested in ie:Victor Martinez?

What Minaya said:

You have to take into account of where you are when you look at the standings. You have to take into account the prospects that they wanted. One thing that’s been good about this process is that I got a good feel for a lot of the teams umm how much they like our prospects but some of those prospects that some teams wanted i felt was just too high to give them and we got some pretty good young prospects whether its pitching… unless its something (someone)
that we gonna hopefully hold on for beyond one year we are gonna try to hold on to as many prospects as we can.

What Minaya meant to say:
Jim Duquette called and told me going down as the guy that traded Brad Holt away is not so bad just look at me and by the way you need to separate your trash for recycling I am not going to tell you again.

********************

When asked if he was within a game or two of the wilcard or the division would he had been more tempted to make one of those deals?

What Minaya said:
A lot of the times if your closer your tempted to do that your tempted to be able to give the players i always been of the belief that during the trading deadline you’d rather be ahead and if your ahead your actually give you know you go for it even more. You gotta balance that out but you know being six games out as a general manager i been six games out before and it’s kinda hard to go out and make a trade. You guys know our situation our situation is not
of one player our situation is about a couple of players so that played into it but the fact that we are six games in the standings played a little ugh
somewhat into it.

What Minaya meant to say:
Yeah right, us within a game or two like that’s ever gonna happen.

********************

When asked does he think player waivers might be easier in August than in previous years due to the economy?

What Minaya said:
I don’t know I wish I was that smart. I’m not that smart.

What Minaya meant to say:
I don’t know I wish I was that smart. I’m not that smart.

********************

When asked if there was some things on the table that he may revisit later?

What Minaya said:
Yeah there’s been some things on the table that we may revisit some of these guys I think will go through waivers.

What Minaya meant to say:
See you guys for Opening Day 2010.

I hope I cleared up any confusion you may have had.

Hmmm, let me have a try at this.

Vmart: We really wanted Vmart, however we only have 2 real pitching prospects and they wanted both. With I May Never Pitch Again Maine, Psycho Perez, and Jitterbug Pelfrey, I did not feel we could take the risk.

Players coming back: No need to trade for a SS and CF. We wanted a 1B/C in Vmart

Vmart cost too high: Considering that if our players are not going to come back there is no hope for this season, the cost was too high.

More tempted if closer: Well duh.

Waiver deals: Who the hell knows?

Example of waiver guys: Pena, Huff, Wiggy. We have gotten production before from waiver deals in Shawn Green and Elduque.

lol Damn, I’ve had the worst f*cking week a guy could have and your asking me b*ll busting questions? Look if Tony were here I would’ve known that Nick Johnson and Orlando Cabrera were available for a bucket of balls. Yeah I know Cabrera is not what he used to be but have you seen what we’re running out there. I mean for G-d sakes we have Angel Berroa. So just get off my f*cking back. You know what I mean?

HAHAHAHA – or I should say laughing out loud is what I’d be doing if this probably wasn’t right on the mark.

Good stuff. Like Omar, hate Omar….the one thing I think we can all agree on is Omar should never be allowed to talk to the media as he clearly doesn’t articulate well at all and doesn’t think quick enough on his feet.

If only Omar had this handy translator throughout his tenure…
