Fine Garland
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jon Garland, eschewed by Met management in favor of the more expensive, less consistent Oliver Perez this past off-season, showed the Mets organization and it’s fans what they missed out on by throwing a 106 pitch complete game as the Snakes beat the New York Mets 5-2. Garland allowed 7 hits, no walks, and recorded 2 strikeouts.

"Hush hush, keep it down down, it won't carry"
Garland had a momentary hiccup, allowing 3 consecutive extra-base hits to the Mets in the bottom of the 5th when Jeff Francoeur homered, Cory Sullivan tripled then Alex Cora doubled to drive him in but that “barrage” was all the Mets could muster and made the score 3-2 DBacks. The Mets would not get any closer as Garland dazzled them with his mediocrity. His pitch count was so low it seemed he could’ve pitched ‘Til Tuesday.

Cory Sullivan did Pilates during game
In the 8th inning with Tim Redding possibly making his last appearance as a Met trying to keep the DBacks within 2 runs at 4-2, Augie Ojeda hit a line drive to CF that Sullivan dove for despite being too far away from the ball to catch it and it bounced behind him for a lead off triple. Ojeda scored on a Gerardo Parra sacrifice fly to cap the scoring and the DBacks, with Garland trimming the Mets bats, held on to win 5-2. Even worse, it turned out to not be Redding’s last appearance as a Met. After the game Jerry Manuel announced that Pat Misch had been designated for assignment to make room for tomorrow’s starter Nelson Figueroa.

Matzo ball soup
When SNY play-by-play announcer Gary Cohen noted in the 7th inning that Garland had “hardly got two balls on any batter” the recent Lou Dobbs-Rachel Maddow spat came to mind, as did some matzo ball soup.

I really expected Pelf to have a better second half than this. 107 pitches(?) in 5 innings isn’t going to cut it.
Figgy pitching tomorrow. Misch DAF’d. Misch, Redding – 6 one, half dozen of the other. Neither are very effective.

The pitchers Omar scoffed at keep coming back to remind him of how bad the Ollie signing was.

to be fair to Omar, it is only the current version of the mets offense making him look good. Other teams have pretty much made him look mediocre at best.
still, 1 year of a wolf or garland level guy instead of an expensive 3 year marriage to Ollie made a ton of liical sense. Just not to Omar.

pelf is still erratic, but he is still the best of the bunch, and shouldn’t be going anywhere. Besides, what can he bring of enough value to make it worth having to replace him?
I won’t argue that a solid guy to slot in behind Johan wouldnt be a nice thing, but right now, that guy would be replacing Maine or Livan.

I was able to take breaks from work to catch bits and pieces from today’s game. Basically I came away with the impression that we had two teams, out of contention, playing out the string, except that it’s only August 2nd. From a long term viewpoint it might be best to allow the walking wounded the rest of the year to get healthy. They’re not going to contend so the lower they fall the better the draft pick.
