Search for .500: Magic Beard Says?

Forget the playoffs at this point step 1 is get back to .500.  The Mets players have started an oath to grow a beard until they get to .500.  Based on my Magic Beard predictions I have decided that will occur August 15th.

Looking at the Mets Schedule I see it breaking down this way:

Game 1: vs Dbacks  Mets some how do what they have all year bounce back when everyone is laughing. 1-0

Game 2: vs Cardinals Santana gets the win 2-0

Game 3: vs Cardinals Niese gets killed, he is due 2-1

Game 4: @ SD Mets again lose 2 in a row back to 2-2

Game 5: @ SD Mets win behind Ollie who actually has a good game 3-2

Game 6: @ SD Mets and Pelfrey get the win 4-2

Game 7: @ SD After winning 2 in a row in SD they lose with Santana on the mound 4-3

Game 8: @ AZ Niese rebounds to get the win 5-3

Game 9: @ AZ Livan gets the win 6-3

Game 10: @AZ Perez goes 1 1/3 innings and gets killed 6-4

Game ll:  SF Pelfrey gets the win 7-4

Game 12: SF Santana gets the win 8-4 ….. .500 BABY!!!!!

Side note: shhhh.  From there the Mets would have to go 31-15 to get to 89 wins.

I guess I would find it more probable if it didn’t have to start with a rather improbable victory over Dan Haren.

That is the beauty of it Grave. To do this you have to expect the improbable. That has been the entire season both on and off the field.
But if it makes it any better you can give us the loss tonight and take one away from Niese.

By the way Grave thought you might like this:
Heyman says Omar Minaya hurt his job security by going after Adam Rubin, but the Mets don’t especially want to fire him with three years remaining on his contract. If Minaya goes, look for the Mets to promote John Ricco.

      1. GravediggerHebner

I hear that. I imagine the Wilpons are pretty tired of firing or having to consider firing people with time left on their contracts. Might make them question their own judgment about contracts.

I am familiar with the name John Ricco, but I find it disconcerting that I don’t specifically know what job he holds currently and that he’s not listed among the 15 people shown on mets.com to be members of the Met front office. Of course, Tony Bernazard is on that list so maybe it needs updating.

        1. trs86

He is the assistant GM right?

          1. GravediggerHebner

Yes, although what “department” he’s in charge of I don’t know. Some asst GMs are specifically contract and/or legal gurus.

But a recent Dave Lennon article speculated that Ricco “could step into the power void vacated by Bernazard.”

          2. trs86

Well I would say he is a contract guy being that before he was into labor relations?

          3. GravediggerHebner

Given the lack of success our “scouting” guy Omar has ultimately had, I cannot be strongly against a “contract” guy I suppose, although ideally I would simply prefer a better scouting guy.

I don’t know their specific backgrounds but I would be happier if we pilfered an up and comer from another organization, one with a recent track record of success at both ML winning and minor league stocking, such as someone from the Red Sox, Angels or Dodgers.

We should bring on Isiah to be the next GM. Sexual harrassment is much less embarassing than challenging ballplayers to a fistacuffs.

Have you guys seen this from Baseball America:

Top Ten GM Prospects Dec, 2003

        http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/features/031209gmprospects.html

Ricco made it on the Next Wave list.

        1. GravediggerHebner

          Woo hoo?

          1. trs86

Another prospect we held onto too long?

          2. GravediggerHebner

            LMAO

          3. CaseStreet

do you mean Yoo Hoo? or is that You Who?

    3. johan4cy

haren is only 10-6. its not too improbable considering that johan is 12-8 and pretty much anyone can beat him this year.

      1. GravediggerHebner

That’s fair. But what we’re asking is a Met lineup to score more off of Dan Haren than a DBack lineup might score off of Nelson Figueroa. Not impossible, but I can’t bring myself into “likely.”

Mark Reynolds (30) and Justin Upton (20) have 50 home runs between them. Our leader is Sheffield with 10. That comparison, plus the comparison of Haren to Figueroa, is what makes me doubtful.

So ur saying it’ll take 89 wins to get the WC?

    1. trs86

I think that puts us in the picture.

    2. GravediggerHebner

Even Fongy has postulated that 89 wins could put the Mets in the ballpark for the WC. But the problem, as he also points out, is that for it to work the Giants and Rockies have to go 30-27 (or worse) the rest of the way, and the Mets have to go 39-19 while hoping that none of the other teams in between get hot.

      1. trs86

I don’t see that as a big deal with the Rockies and Giants. They are both capable of going 5 over or 5 under the rest of the way.

        1. GravediggerHebner

Unfortunately if either goes 5 over, then the Mets would have to go 41-17.

          1. trs86

Yeah, I really expect them to play .500.

        2. There's Always '09

The Rockies offense is about 700x better than ours. The Giants pitching staff is about 80% deeper than ours. That’s the big deal.

Lincecum vs. Santana – I’ll take Santana
Cain vs. Pelf – Cain all day everyday
          Sanchez vs. Hernandez – Sanchez
          Zito vs. Niese – Zito
Whoever vs. Ollie – Whoever wins

      2. trs86

31-15 for some reason sounds much better.

        1. There's Always '09

Things to accomplish before the end fo the season:

          1) Hit Rollins in the kneecap
          2) Hit Utley in the kneecap
          3) Hit Howard in teh kneecap
          4) Hit Vic in the face
          5) Finish in the bottom 5 in baseball so we can botch the draft pick.
          6) Hit a foul ball off Chollie’s belly.

          1. CaseStreet

            forgot Hamels.

          2. There's Always '09

Thanks for reminding me. Actually, I don’t even know why I’m bad-mouthing the phillies. They aren’t even our competition. It’s the Nationals, Pirates, Padres, D-Backs, Royals, and A’s that should concern us.

          3. CaseStreet

It’s like a guy w/o legs beating up on a midget.

  3. There's Always '09

Game 5: @ SD Mets win behind Ollie who actually has a good game 3-2

    Ollie’s line in that game: 5IP, 4H, 3R, 12BB, 15K, 229 pitches; the enigma that is ollie.
