is anyone else not looking forward to this series? I mean Santana is on the mound and all, but you just know pineiro will throw a CG 1 hit shutout, and Niese vs Lohse?

    1. charlie_s

I think I’m done looking forward to anything having to do with the Mets for a while. If Beltran, Reyes, Delgado, Putz, and Wagner were back today, that would be a different story. This team has got nothing.

      1. dirtysanchez

        agreed charlie..im pretty much done.

        1. charlie_s

          sad…

we wait so long in the off season.

after yadier molina in 2006, the collapse in 2007, the collapse redux in 2008, and the MASHets and the impotent GM in 2009, how do we look forward to 2010 as a year the team competes for and makes the playoffs?

all hope is dashed until further notice.

          1. dentulous

all we need is a good and exciting hotstove to get your hopes up for 2010. Oh wait….I forgot about bernie….

            yeah, your right, no hope.

          2. sabermetrician

I agree Charlie, I think 2010 could be real bad.

            We must address:

            1B
            C
            LF
            SP 2 and 4-5
            LOOGY

            We might need to address:

            CF

            We should address, but won’t:

            SP depth
            RF

  2. charlie_s

8.0 games back of the wild card (again), five games under .500 (again), no chance in hell to make the playoffs (again).

    1. dentulous

well, at least they had us going for that one week. Oh well….

      1. charlie_s

Yeah, the season reduced to a week! It was a good week.

  3. sabermetrician

We currently have the 10th worst record in the majors, if we can stay there or fall we’ll have a protected pick and signing a Type A free agent won’t cost us our first rounder.

    1. charlie_s

Well, leave it to this team to screw that up, too. (But, good point Saber.) It would be nice to see the team be able to sign a type A and not deplete the farm.

    2. trs86

No chance in that Saber, we will make a small run when the others come back. You can say you hope they don’t but in the end you know they will.

      1. metsfan4decades

I fear you may be right on this….

      2. steveo

Forget about the small run and the others comming back did you hear delgado last night he is at a minium 3 weeks out beltrans still in pain and reyes is done for the year forget about any streaks of winning

      3. dirtysanchez

and it will play out just like last nights game…rally back but no cigar…

      4. sabermetrician

I’m not convinced they’ll make a run. We just got pounded by what was the sixth worst team until they played us. Now they’re the ninth worst. That tends to happen when teams play us.

  4. sabermetrician

Does anyone worry that the Wilpons will tighten their belts next year?

This is not a good team:

LF – mid level FA or Pagan
    CF – Beltran
    RF – Francoeur
C – mid level FA or Santos
    1B – Murphy
    2B – Castillo
    SS – Reyes
    3B – Wright

    SP – Santana
    SP – Pelfrey
    SP – Perez
SP – mid level FA or Maine
    SP – mid level FA

    RP – KRod
    Bullpen – small signings

We’re not good at SP 3-5, RF, 1B, and potentially LF and C

    1. sabermetrician

Before the Francoeur lovers jump on me, I realize he has been good with us, but that’s a VERY small sample.

    2. dentulous

yeah, that pretty damn putrid. That rotation kills me and that lineup is no good unless we get a really good 1B or a really good LF. If this is what 2010 is looking like, and my gut tells me it will be like that, we can concede 2010 as well.

      1. sabermetrician

I’m really worried about next year. Who are the FAs that we can get? It’s not an appealing class. The Wilpons and Omar chose not to carry a heavy payroll for one year when we could have had some really good FAs.

        1. whataputz

If Beltran is hurt then we are screwed. However if he is healthy next year, there is no need to freak. Though i think they need another big bat. Beltran is the most talented player on this team outside of maybe Reyes. The team revolves around Reyes and Beltran, and it’s time management built the team around them.

  5. steveo

I think you hit right on the head. There won’t be any large contacts given out the mets seem to always get burned with them anyway look ,pedro betran wagner alou , all had good years but a had a year of the dl add degado to that as well and don’t let me go back into the past I’m at the pont where santanas deal is starting to handcuff them as well as beltrans.I think they want to keep payroll down to the 115 mil range

    1. sabermetrician

I’m terrified, this team needs to add payroll next year after the money comes off the books, but there’s no one worthy of a big deal. Santana’s deal will really hurt in a couple of years when he’s not an ace.

  6. steveo

That 20 mill to beltran will hurt as we’ll for the next 2

    1. sabermetrician

It will if he’s not the Beltran he has been for the past three seasons. Which I’m worried he won’t be.

  7. CaseStreet

2010 will be fine. Haven’t you heard of The Real Dirty Project? (it’s like the Manhattan Project but w/ a bigger bang)

    1. trs86

      Yup, I got it nailed.

      1. gategem

lol You intend to buy the team????

  8. CaseStreet

Oh how I long for the days of heartless and gritless baseball.

    1. trs86

Yeah, at least that team HAD talent.

  9. metsfan4decades

    My biggest fear:
Due to $$ reasons we won’t due much over the winter. They’ll go with:
    - FMart in LF, Beltran in C, Frenchy in RF.
    - Murph at 1st, Castillo 2nd, Reyes SS, Wright 3rd.
    - Santos will be back but probably will get another catcher.
    - SP will look like: Johan, Pelf, Ollie, Maine, Niese/Nieve.

BP more/less the same with Wagner and Putz gone.

Bottom line is if they don’t manage to trade a few by waiver deadline (Wagner? Delgado? Schneider?) for some decent prospects and get one of at least two of a SP/LF, we might very well not be looking at anything exciting in 2010 either.

I have to believe between the money the Wilpons lost, the economy, FA not very exciting over this upcoming off season and the question marks surrounding who will be the GM and manager, I won’t be nearly as confident in the team we’ll have in 2010 going in, as I was this year when the season started…

    1. prismo

      Helloooo 3rd place!

      1. whataputz

Its so ridiculously hard to judge Murph. I just wish he played another position. I think he is starting to come around. i love the work ethic, and he really seems to be a winner. My only problem is his position. It’s tough to trot out a first basemen with his bat. If Murph played anywhere else he I would def give him another shot. Personally, I’d rather see the team go with a big power hitter at first base. However next season there is no one. If the Mets can bring in a huge power bat to play LF next season, and can bring in Molina to catch, then what the heck keep Murphy, but if they are going with F-Mart or Pagan, we need a power first basemen.

        1. dirtysanchez

I think we need power…i dont care from where.

          1. trs86

            Enter Vlad and Molina.

          2. CaseStreet

            Vlad, don’t you mean Ankiel?

          3. trs86

            Yes I, I, I, do.
However, I am not Omar. Vlad is already shopping for a house in Queens.

          4. CaseStreet

sweet. why not bring Manny too?

    2. saltygary

I’m fine with that OF if FMart can progress. The team needs a real impact 1B. AGon in SD is available and would be a great add not sure what else is available. If they can score a decent SP they wont be too bad.

As with last season I still think they need to get rid of Reyes while he is at his peak value. Maybe he can be a trade chip for that 1b or SP and then pick up a guy like Cabrera on the cheap.

      1. trs86

Daniel Cabrera? The one the Nats cut?

        1. CaseStreet

recently picked up by the D-backs

          1. trs86

Thing is why would we want him. His track record is even worse than Redding.

          2. whataputz

If the Mets ever sign Cabrera I think we should organize a Citi field walk-out.

          3. saltygary

Orlando the SS. I don’t think I could watch a game if we picked up Daniel C.
