You know what worries me…Omar and the Wilpons may use the injuries as an excuse not to make a big push in the off-season for new talent. They’ll say “we have all these great players coming back, we don’t need to be aggressive in the free agent market!” And then the Mets end up as a sub-par team next season.

      sounds about right.

Would you expect anything else? Youknowwhatimsayin?

To be fair, though, we’ve got a TON of holes to fill for next year. I really don’t us filling all of them even with a competent GM. We need to spend a few years developing more talent, then make a run at it.

        What holes?

        C – Santos
        1B – Murphy
        2B – Castillo
        SS – Reyes
        3B – Wright
        LF – F Martinez
        CF – Beltran
        RF – Francoeur

SP – Santana, Pelfrey, Perez, Maine, Niese
        RP – Whoever, Krod

I don’t see any holes to fill! (this is my best Omar/Wilpon impression)

          Well played, sir! :p

now thats a championship team if i ever saw one

Well, the truth is adding helathy guys like Reyes and Beltran are going to improve any team, but yes you are right there are a number of holes and the off season should be used to try and fill them.

I think the book is still out on Murphy and eventually a decision needs to be made. They obviously need more pop, whether that comes from an OF position or 1B remains to be seen. Like many have said, if they get some power in the OF then they might be able to carry Murph at 1B, but again the rest of this season should be about evaluating his long term prospects with the team.

Another front line pitcher would be nice as well.

I see our rotation as being one of the biggest holes on the team, honestly. Pelfrey is not a number 2, Ollie is a ridiculous head case (you can only ride the “he’s a young lefty with good upside” argument for so long before realizing he’s a bust), Maine is a huge question mark with his health and his ability to go deep into games, and who knows about Niese at this point. That’s really not a good major league rotation unless we catch a lot of breaks or have an uber-offense.

I think another solid SP is a must, not a ‘nice to have’ kind of thing. To me, that’s the #1 priority, closely followed by a bat (probably LF).
We also need a catcher and a lefty specialist for the BP.

        1. udontmesswthejohan

Agreed Nova/Decades. There are a lot of holes, there’s no doubt about that. One of the reasons why I didn’t feel this team had any right to be a buyer at or before the deadline. One guy simply wasn’t going to make a difference.

So, let’s say a front of the rotation guy, plus a LF and hopefully the return of a healthy Beltran and Reyes.

and a catcher, and maybe a first baseman…

          1. JoeR

Agreed, but thats what stinks. If we get a big time bat all that does is replace Delgado’s production. Then we are left where we have been the last 3 years!! Still missing that extra bat to put us over the top! Fire Omar for not getting VMart!!! I joke but seriously, I can live with everything else this guy did, maybe minus not signing Dunn or Abreu, but VMART was not a rental for a lost season this year Omar! He was the perfect fit for next year YOU DOPE!! lol

    5. charlie_s

That’s a given. I can just see Jeff “Silver Spoon” Wilpon now…

“Omar did a great job putting together a championship caliber team. Unfortunately, the injuries ruined his phenomenal plan. The very fact that the injuries hurt the team’s success to this degree just proves what kind of genius Omar is in putting together winning teams. This is why we have decided to give Omar another extension. Much like a Supreme Court judge, Omar will serve as Mets GM for life and be paid 50% of all team revenues. Long life Omar!”

  2. JoeR

Thats why not getting VMart was so so sickly insane. He would have filled so many holes. First he takes pressure off acquiring that big outfield bat we have been yearning for the last 3 years going on 4. He solves your catching problem unless of course Santos is our catcher of teh future…He can play first if Delgado doesnt come back and Murphy needs some help. He can HIT!! It would have been a great boost this year and it would have been the perfect move for next.

It really didnt make any sense. That was the one move that NEEDED to be made by Omar! I get not giving up prospects for a season that appeared to be lost but this ugh…

    1. JoeR

Niese may be the worst injury we have experienced all year! We know what Beltran can do when healthy, we know what Reyes can do when healthy, etc We were just starting to get a feel for Niese and he was just starting to get a feel for his stuff. Pitching was a problem this year and next maybe even more so. He would have had at least 4 more starts or so to get a feel for the Majors and hone his stuff even more! It really stinks!!!!

    2. charlie_s

Who says the Mets could have gotten him? I mean, maybe the Indians liked Boston’s prospects more than what Omar had to offer.

      1. JoeR

Obviously thats always the case. With that said if you look at what they gave up, I am confident we could have put a similar if not a better package together.

        1. wannybackstra

Our comparable package would have been something like Parnell (Masterson) and Mejia (Hagadone). Maybe you can argue that Rustich would have been the comp for Hagadone but I’d still take the deal with Masterson over Parnell anyway.

          1. charlie_s

I agree, Parnell hasn’t exactly distinguished himself.

  3. stickguy

I agree that Omar and the rest of the dimwits in management are likely to just use the injuries to cover for the lack of foresight or a plan this off season. Never mind that even if they had been healthy, just about all the current holes were going to exist anyway. Maybe not quite as bad in the SP, but the rest would anyway.

Given all of the FO problems, and the huge uncertainty about what/where the team is, and what direction to take it (and of course the major decisions and moves to be made this off season), this really is the perfect time to clear the FO out and bring in the fresh blood.

frnakly, if they dont clean out the FO on 10/3, why bother to do anything with Omar (that is, either let him have the full contract, or fire him now). No point in letting him even try to run this off season if you are putting him on notice to be fired if next year doesnt go well.

ANd, call up Ike Davis. Shoot for him to at least platoon next year at 1B.

  4. metsfan4decades

This might be one of the more ridiculous opinions I’ve seen posted on that other blog:

‘like i suggested a few weeks ago, there are people who believe the Mets training staff may give too much slack to players, who they let dictate how they’re feeling, how they’re progressing, etc., instead of the team just telling the player how it is… i do know the team’s doctors are well respected around the game…’

Oh, you mean like Beltran, who had been diagnosed with a bone bruise, giving him a cortisone shot and sticking him back in the field 48 hours later? Yeah, how well did that work out?????

To quote Omar in the SNY booth a couple of weeks ago, when asked how much confidence he’s got in the Mets trainers and doctors:
‘We have excellent trainers/doctors and the HFSP. We weigh the advice we get vs. putting our good players on the DL for extended periods of time’.

Again, concerning Beltran, maybe if they had just put him on the 15 day DL with that bone bruise, it wouldn’t have grown worse and we wouldn’t have missed him for half the season, with a danger of surgery now….

    1. JoeR

Agreed and what is so crazy and it has to bother Beltran HE was told he couldnt do anymore damage by playing on it…..Um….well….I think he did.
