Mets Hope Trade Wagner and Delgado?

According to Adam Rubin the Mets are discussing the idea of trading Wagner and Delgado before the August 31st waiver deadline.  This plan would be contingent upon a couple of things.  One both players need to return quickly in order to prove any worth.  Two the Mets would most likely have to pickup all of the salary owed to them.  My hope is this happens soon along with Schneider, Sheff, and Putz.  Even if the prospects are not great they are still depth that can be used in future trades.  It also clears any chance of animosity in the clubhouse as the Mets should be looking to play their youth in order to establish roles for next year.

well obviously omar hasn’t given up the ship
besides all the wilpons care about is the revenue coming from the concessions and parking from there and they won’t sell off those pieces becasue to declare defeat will cause total apathy and lack of revenue

Hey all! Glad I was able to see a good game last night (Yanks and Sox). Of course, Ollie had a great game himself. Hopefully it’ll continue.

I’d also like to report that after winning their first two games, the Long Island City YMCA Bulldogs are now 2-6. Someone find me a pitcher, quick!

Anyone have ideas who might pick up Wags and Gado? Any team can use a lefty reliever, but what about Delgado? Are there any right handed heavy teams in need of a 1b/DH?

    1. rustyjr

boston could want either since poppi has lost his swing and they need bullpen help – but who says that they would be able to claim them

    2. whataputz

Why trade Delgado? There is nothing you can get in return that makes it worth it. Let him play, and if he hits re-sign him, if he fails, then goodbye. If he comes back too soon and gets hurt, there is no risk, so why not just get this guy in ASAP.

      1. rustyjr

i agree but we are talking hypothetically

      2. trs86

What do you mean nothing that makes it worth it. Anything is worth it. We should NOT even think about resigning him no matter how well he hits. He hit well last September and the September before that. Those really showed us something about Delgado. If we pay for his salary then some team will give us a prospect. That’s more than we get out of him otherwise.

        1. rustyjr

not being sarcastic here trs – but do you think a remaining goal would be to get to .500 or over ? and if so do you think we need delgado wagner putz etc to get us there?

          1. trs86

I don’t have a remaining goal except to get some questions answered AND get prospects for players who are not going to be here. Really what is the difference in between 81-81 and 70-92 both stink and result in no playoffs.

          2. gipperpdx

Er, I agree on Schneid, Delgado, Wags,…but why Putz? won’t we want to keep him for 2010, or are you thinking 2011 is the soonest we’ll compete?

        2. whataputz

What class of prospect will you get for an old as balls injured rental? Delgado was dynamite this year when he was healthy and is still probably close to leading our offensive categories. If he can still hit next season like he would have if he was healthy, then why not? Next years class of fa at 1b sucks, and I’d hate to give a long term contract to a mediocre 1b just cause they need one. Delgado has the power to hit it out even at our cavern of a stadium, and I’d hate to see the Mets sign a Laroach or some other ok 1b to a 3 year deal just so fill the 1b gap, when they can plug in gado next season if healthy, get production then try for the fix at 1b in ’11 where I’m sure there are better 1b candidates.

          1. trs86

            HE IS NEVER HEALTHY.

          2. trs86

You will end up paying Delgado 8 million so Murphy can start at 1B.

          3. whataputz

How many games did he miss last season? This years injury was a weird injury that was the result of awkward base running because he hit a ball that is a home run in any other stadium, but because the Mets are run by mentally challenged 3 year olds we decided to build a park in which you are not permitted to hit home runs.

          4. trs86

How many games did he suck and we wished he was injured?

          5. trs86

We all remember the 2nd half Delgado for 2008. Do we remember this one? .248 .328

          6. whataputz

He practically carried us in the beggining of this season! He carried us in september, and carried us in the ’06 playoffs. Please stop hating on carlos delgado, because the inferior David Wright who everybody loves is an epic failure when it counts. In my opinion this team will always lose if we continue to build the team around david wright, and continue to neglect his epic failure to ever do anything when it counts, that is my true opinion on the problem with this team.

          7. trs86

So I don’t like the idea of bringing back Delgado and I am hating on him? He is inconsistent and I don’t think it’s wise to bring back ANY older past their prime guys that have injury issues. Not Wagner, Putz or Delgado. I think with our limited budget it can be spent in better ways.
As for your obsession to bring up Wright, it makes you sound like a 4 year old. Well my daddy is bigger than your daddy.

          8. whataputz

No I just think that everybody is placing blame the wrong way. Everybody is being distracted while the real problem is right in front of us. Or should I say Wright in front of us. Carlos Delgado is not the person holding this team back whether we sign him or re-sign him. Delgado is not the face of this team. It is my opinion that the biggest problem this team has and will continue to have is the fact that for some reason they have placed this team in the hands of Wright. This guy is our future, and this bothers me. If we built this team round Reyes we would be alot better off. If we build this franchise around David Wright we will continue to be disappointing every September.

          9. trs86

Let me start this by saying I love Wright AND Reyes. But do you even know Wright and Reyes’s September numbers?

          10. whataputz

David Wright continues to make big out after big out when the spotlight is on him. whenever the giuy gets up and you can directly say “This hit will win the game” he never comes through. sure he will tack on a grand slam in a september blowout which I recall him doing last season at some point, but when you get to the big game (see the playoffs and the last game of 07 and 08 he freezes up like a little girl. He had a 3-0 count and was going to be walked and all he had to do was accept that fact, but instead he has to be the hero and killed us. Watch him play without looking a his numbers. watch how many times you will see the pitcher throw 20 pitches to the first two hitters and then wright will chase the first pitch in the dirt. He has become a guess hitter, and lost his power.

          11. trs86

            Let me help:
            Jose Reyes 2008 September .243, .314
            Jose Reyes 2007 September .207, .297

            David Wright 2008 September .340, .416
            David Wright 2007 September .352, .432

Saying that Reyes is not the problem and Wright is again just shows your biased against a certain player. Does Wright need to come through more in big situations yes? Is he more of a problem in September than Reyes, LOL.

          12. whataputz

I never said reyes was a september juggernaut. Yo can look at stats or you can take eye-witnessed events into account. The bottomline is that no matter what stat you throw at me, David wright does not get it done when the pressure is directly on him. sure he will drive in a run on a first inning single (which is very very important, not taking that away from him), but when the pressure is directly on him, he rarely comes through. Wright is a good player to have, but not a person to build a franchise around.

          13. trs86

So someone that chokes in every AB in September is?

          14. trs86

And what I really love is when people say in the face of stats that stats don’t work. LOL. So you watched every ab and counted the times he did well and times he did not and came up with your own unbiased stat? Again, Wright AND Reyes need to come through in big spots. But if Reyes just hits his career averages in September then we make the playoffs both times.

          15. whataputz

If reyes plays well the Mets simply don’t lose. If he is on he is one of the most dynamic valuable players in the game. His job is to get on base, Wright is to drive in runs. Wright is supposed to have the big walk offs and the big hits. sure Reeys has not done his job when it counted yet either, but neither has Wright in my opinion. Stats only say so much. Like the popular cliche says you are successfull if you fail one out every 3 times, so who’s its entirely possible to go on a tear and go 4-5 in a blowout and then suck for 2 days and still come out looking good. I’m not saying this was always the case for Wright, but can you list to me all the hug hits he has had over his caeer? I think he has 2 career walk off hits or maybe 3 over his entire career. I am not a stat guru, but I’m willing to guarantee you Wrights numbers drop off late in games.Say all you want, but Wright is not the guy I want up in the big spot, and for him to be the face of the team and for me to say that is scary. The guy very well cost us last season with his 3-0 at bat with murph on first. The pitcher clearly wanted to walk him and he fu**ing swung 3-0! that is just about all you have to know. WRight did sh** in the ’06 nlcs as well.

          16. whataputz

Excuse me, with Murphy on 3rd

          17. trs86

Hmmm, and you don’t have a complex about Wright. You just ignore the fact that if Reyes hits .250 in 2007 we make the playoffs. .250.

          18. trs86

Wright’s stats for close and late for his career:
            .300 .407 .466 .873

          19. whataputz

Here’s the difference between Reyes and Wright. Assume every player on our team will be healthy next season. Assume we re-sign delgado and he plays like did last year (just assume not saying it will happen), the Mets can trade Wright straight up for a Carlos Lee or someone like him (which the ‘Stros would do in a second), move Murphy to third, and not lose a beat. They cannot trade Reyes and replace him. Wright has become a very expendable player. Any guy that can belt 30 dingers can bring as much production as Wright can now bring due to his power outage.

          20. trs86

Actually the difference in Wright and Reyes is about 100-150 points in BA in September and 150-200 points in OBP.

          21. trs86

And your idea of replacing Wright can be done with Reyes, go get me Crawford or Ichiro and we will not skip a beat unless they actually hit in September.

          22. whataputz

Hows the team doing with David Wright as the slugger? Good compliment player, who DID put up great stats. Now He cannot hr’s and you will start to see that .315 13 hr;s and 85 rbi are not going to guarantee us any WS’S especially if he;s our clean-up hitter.

          23. whataputz

OK so there are 2 players that can replace him (maybe 3 if you count granderson)..any 30 hr hitter in the game can replace Wright. Wright is incredibly expendable. Nobody in the game does what reyes does. Tons of guys can drive in 100 rbi and hit 25+ hr’s.

          24. trs86

You mean what Reyes USED to be able to do. His stats were not great this year and his legs may never be the same again. So in that case any average lead off hitter could replace him.
Look this is pointless. I like Reyes and Wright. This type of distain for Wright just really gets on my nerves. He has had a down year in power numbers but has kept a high average and played decent defense. Hardly the reason that we stink this year. If Wright had 30 HR right now instead of what he has we still would not be .500.

          25. whataputz

TR, while you might not be the person I am directing this at, there are so many stupid fans whether its metsblog or WFAN or whatever that are always saying trade Reyes, but nobody ever gets down on Wright. He always gets a free pass. I’ll admit I’m particularly down on him and I flat out don’t like him for whatever reason. I will stand in my stance that he is not a clutch hitter no matter what stats you show me unless I can see specific hits he got. I don’t feel like going through that argument, that;s just how I feel like it or hate it. Any like I had for the guy disappeared in what might be the worst at-bat I have ever witnessed, when he struck out with Murph on third on a 3-0 count against the Cubs. whether its his fault or not, he’s been the face of a team that has choked 2 consecutive years (I give them a pass this year). Even if its just guilty by associations, what I’ve watched in recent Mets history is absolutely sickening.

cany anyone explain why tonites game is at 10 pm? i mean its a saturday fror chrissakes

  6. whataputz

The entire ’10 season is pinned on Carlos Beltran’s health. I saw something that said he will miss next season due to surgery. If he can play next season healthy, i think all this panic is kind of overdone, because with him and Reyes back, and whatever other bodies the Mets can manage to bring in, we are a good team. If Beltran is hurt next year than there is nobody the Mets are going to bring in that is going to make us a playoff team.

    1. trs86

There has been NOTHING that said he will miss next season due to surgery beyond just pure speculation.

      1. gipperpdx

I think we all have to assume Reyes and Beltran will never be the same….after all, it’s the Mets! And that is the kind of luck we have.

  7. sabermetrician

I don’t agree with the statement that we need to be playing our youth. We have no “youth” that is ML ready, why compound problems with a good old Omar standard of rushing a prospect?

I realize that if Murphy is going to be our 1B then he should be playing, but if Murphy is going to be our 1B then next year is lost anyway, so what does it matter?

Mattsblog is saying that we’ll only have about $20 mil to spend next year, interesting considering that if you do the math it’s closer to $30-$35, just shows that we’re headed the wrong direction in every aspect.

    1. trs86

If Murphy is our 1B then next year is lost? Because we can not upgrade SP, LF, C? Only 1B? Or are you saying we have to upgrade all of those to contend?

      1. sabermetrician

I’m saying that Murphy is not an ML calibre 1B at the plate. There’s no way that we will be in contention if Murphy is our 1B.

        1. whataputz

We need to bring in a monster LFer that can just hit a boat load of home runs.

          1. trs86

            Who?

          2. sabermetrician

I just don’t see anyone that we’ll get. Abreu will be available, but he’s not what you describe. I wish we had gotten Dunn on a two year deal. I think we’ll be weak at 1B and LF next year personally.

          3. trs86

Abreu I think stays in Cal. They and he like the situation out there. Holliday and Bay are REAL long shots.
If you want to trade Murphy and bring in Carlos Pena I am fine with that.

        2. trs86

So again you are saying that if we upgrade SP, LF and C that if Murphy is our 1B then we won’t contend?
But in turn if we resign Delgado and do not upgrade SP, LF and C that we will contend?

We both know it’s going to take more than one thing. If we upgrade LF and our #2 SP then Murphy will be fine. If we upgrade Murphy and Catcher then we are still going to stink.

          1. whataputz

The mets need alot. They need an ace, they need another starting pitcher that has played over half a season in his career (see John Maine. Every team need bullpen help. They need to sign an outfielder with a ton of pop because and only because the 1b class sucks. I’m not attached to delgado at the hip, its just that there are not great options, and if we chase the best 1b availa ble we are not getting them to 1 year deals, and thus i’d rather stick it out with gado or Murph than deal with 3 or 4 years of mediocrity. I really what the Mets to get Carlos Lee, or Adam Dunn, who can just sock the ball no matter what venue.

          2. trs86

Agreed Whata, I just don’t want to waste what little money we have on Delgado.

          3. sabermetrician

Where did I say that we should resign Delgado? Find that for me, I’d really like to know. I’ve been advocating trading Putz, Wagner, Schneider, Delgado, Livan, Sheff, and Murphy for quite some time.

The fact of the matter is, we know that Francoeur is our starting RF next year and he produces below a replacement level RF. If you take another power position and put Murphy there you are left with one power position, LF. (3B & CF will certainly give us more power next year, but that wasn’t working as is)

          4. trs86

Frenchy we have no idea. But who are you advocating for 1B?

          5. sabermetrician

I don’t have the answer for that. And I agree with you in principle that if you make LF strong enough then you can have Murphy play 1B. Here’s the bottom line though:

Do we plan to compete in 2010? or is 2010 just to get us to 2011?

I’m not sure that we’ll be able to compete next year.

          6. trs86

I disagree. Lets say that Omar is making the decisions and we get Vlad, Molina and a pitcher. Will I like it? No. Will we contend? Maybe if Beltran is healthy.

If it’s another GM perhaps they can be more creative and get either Pena or Crawford and Kazmir along with a catcher.

          7. whataputz

I actually like Molina as catcher, the guy has a serious bat.

          8. sabermetrician

The time to have signed Vlad passed long ago when the Angels signed him.

That is a classic Omar move though. Say he does exactly what you suggest. I think even with a healthy Beltran and Reyes, and a more formidable David Wright, we are a .500-.550 team. So maybe we are in more contention than we are now, but we fall out in early September instead of early July. It would be similar to 2005.

          9. trs86

Really? I don’t like it but you think this lineup does not get us into contention?
Reyes, Castillo, Beltran, Vlad, Wright, Frechy, Murphy, Molina? with a pitcher in the rotation to boot?

          10. trs86

So let me get this straight, Reyes, Beltran, Vlad, Molina and a pitcher improves us by 6-10 games?

          11. whataputz

The Mets cannot go another season with 0 production from first base. Thats like the yankees using cdy ransom as a DH. Vlad is no longer a clean-up hitter. its not a terrible move, but this team is going to have to figure a way to bring up the budget because there are too many holes to fill.

          12. trs86

Again, I don’t like the lineup but it’s very competitive. We are making too big of an issue out of 1B like it’s some cure all. If you only upgrade 1B it does nothing. Again if we can get Agonz, Pena, Fielder then sure. But LaRoche or Delgado instead of Murphy and spending 8 million of our small amount of money does nothing for us.

          13. sabermetrician

Actually if you do the math correctly it would be 7-13 games, and yes that is what I’m saying.

          14. trs86

Well then it won’t matter if Murphy plays 1B or not because we will stink anyway so why waste money on Delgado?

          15. sabermetrician

Again, I NEVER said to sign Delgado.

You would need to make a trade to improve 1B if you want to be competitive in 2010, I think it might be a better plan to prepare for 2011. (See 2004)

          16. whataputz

Unless you have a Manny Ramirez type outfielder, you cannot get away with no offensive production at 1b. Especially if you want to win a WS, especially if you’re a big market team. The NL 1b is as close as you can get to a DH in the NL. You cannot get away with a mediocre fielding 1b that is going to hit .250 and hit 10 hr’s. escpecially when your corner outfielders are Jeff Francour and an old vlad Guerrero (or whoever they sign).

          17. trs86

LOL, I am having two conversations at the same time Saber. I did not say YOU said resign Delgado. I am just not ready to give up on next year if we don’t bring in Agonz.

          18. trs86

OK folks so you have convinced me, 1B is the most important position we have to upgrade. LOL. Later.

          19. whataputz

Because it is the most important position to upgrade. Look at last years playoff teams, and look at who their first basemen where. And the teams that don’t necessarily stand out at 1b i guarantee you have a Juggernaut at another position, and a good 1b. LA had Manny, and Loney is a good player, Mi;l had Prince, Chic had Lee, and Phil had Howard.

          20. trs86

LOL, I agree with you now. So you go get a 1B stud and spend all our money and I will go get WS tickets.

          21. whataputz

I am pretty sure I said earlier that they many more problems than 1b and that you agreed with me. I’m just saying with our long laundry list of problems, I think 1b is at the top and is more important to address than lets say catcher.

  8. steveo

Again we a getting ahead of ourselves. Without knowing what kind of money we will have to deal with I personally think murphy will be at first next year there really is not a good first baseman availible in fa category

    1. trs86

Agreed, Lets assume that previous reports are correct and we have 30-35 million to spend. Do we really want to waste at least 8 of that on Delgado? Unless we can trade for Fielder or AGonz then I say we leave 1B alone and try to upgrade LF and Catcher for the lineup. No matter what we have to have a pitcher.

    2. sabermetrician

Mattsblog is saying we’ll have about $20 mil. I don’t believe this team will contend next year.

      1. trs86

Why believe anything like that on Mattsblog?

        1. trs86

          What source was provided?

          1. gategem

He didn’t provide a source but he is part of the Mets family. Right? :)

BTW this brings me to the use of terms like “our,” “we,” etc. Many years ago when I was young I used those terms to refer to “my” Brooklyn Dodgers. Walter O’Malley basically told me to take those terms and shove it up “my” a$$pipe and moved “our” franchise to the City of Angels. We have as much impact on what the Mets do as we do of changing the direction of a Hurricane with the artful use of flatulence. While speculation of forthcoming Mets moves can be fun we should not lose sight of the fact that it is strictly a form of entertainment and all we can do is speculate. If the Wilpons decide to apply more of the profits back into the club or if they decide they need it to retrofit their private jet is solely at their discretion. So in this time of potential frustration let’s keep it fun and not turn against each other since it should be obvious the Wilpons couldn’t care less.

          2. stevefromnorfolk

The number was from an Adam Rubin column. It was used in a “what-if” context; i.e. “What if the Mets cut payroll next year? Even if they only cut $10 million, what do we need” — it’s pure conjecture. Wouldn’t surprise me to see a payroll cut, though. You know the Wilpons won’t come up with an idea to increase income, like dropping prices to increase attendance. Too far out there for them.

        2. sabermetrician

While I’m like you in that I like to just calculate what we should have I realize that Matt is around the organization a lot more than any of us. I’m not convinced that’s what we’ll have available, but I’m thinking he has probably heard that somewhere. Again, that doesn’t mean it’s 100% reliable, but it’s probably more reliable than our calculations.

Again, source? Can you even give me the link from Mattsblog?

All the things on Mlbtraderumors, Surfin the Mets, etc point to a payroll the same as this year. That leaves much more than 20 million.

Do you think I’m making this up?

            http://www.metsblog.com/

            First post.

          3. trs86

LOL, no I am not saying YOU made it up. It’s just he has provided NOTHING for proof of that. Take a look at this. http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p4ew-fwu2XT2R6BFbZ5C_Ww

            You do the math.

          4. trs86

Hell Delgado and Wagner alone make 20+

          5. sabermetrician

I said all along that the math adds up to way more, I don’t know where Matt got that number, but he’s much closer to the organization than we are he may be hearing things.

Besides, many of us have speculated that the Wilpons would reduce payroll.

While I don’t think that Beltran’s issue is as serious as it has been blown up by some, the original story that has so many concerned for Beltran next year was reported by Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus:

Carlos Beltran is coming back. That was always the plan, but how he’s going about it speaks a lot to where he might be in the future. Beltran has decided to accelerate the pace of his rehab, hoping to come back towards mid-August, matching up closely with Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado, and Billy Wagner. That’s an infusion of talent no team will be able to match with trades, but it might also be too little, too late as the Mets continue to slip. Beltran made the informed decision based on the near certainty that he will need microfracture surgery and could miss much, if not all, of the 2010 season. He’ll do everything he can to avoid it, but that’s the worst case scenario and he’s willing to give it a go. His success will be based on pain tolerance and management, as well as Jerry Manuel’s ability to spot him in and out. It’s unlikely he can play CF, though no one has said much about where he will actually play. It’s a calculated risk that Beltran and the Mets are taking. Given the success – or lack thereof – with microfracture in MLB, it’s a big risk and perhaps Beltran’s last hurrah.

The words “near certainty” are what have caused the panic.

Even this sounds like journalism speculation
“Beltran made the informed decision based on the near certainty that he will need microfracture surgery and could miss much, if not all, of the 2010 season. He’ll do everything he can to avoid it, but that’s the worst case scenario and he’s willing to give it a go”

Did Beltran say I am going to need surgery but I will wait? If he needed surgery he would have already had it.

As I stated above, “While I don’t think that Beltran’s issue is as serious as it has been blown up by some…”

I posted this so that everyone will know where the Beltran talk is coming from, and not just be building off of some random posters statement that Beltran is out next year.

Geez it’s getting pretty angry in here, I’m glad I had yardwork to do this afternoon. I am going to blame the headline for the elevated testosterone. “Mets hope trade Wagner and Delgado?” That’s like “Fire hot me burn” or “Square wheel no roll.” It seems to have brought out the caveman in many of us. 8)

LMAO…thanks Hebner for taking the edge off.

Heb, I’ve seen you called, among other things, Herb. Is that your name or a misspelling of Heb?

      1. GravediggerHebner

Perhaps it’s in honor of one of my favorite television characters, Herb Tarlek of WKRP in Cincinnati.

Or perhaps it’s because of certain baggies that might have been found in the pocket of my jacket back in the day.

Or maybe it’s just a typo of “Heb,” I’m not sure. But no it’s not my name.

Wow Schneider is batting under .200!…and he’s played in alot of games. Why is he on this roster? He is old as balls, sucks, and will be gone next year. Just play santos as much as possible and let Schneid sit the rest of his Mets career and hopefully his baseball career.
