Draft & Follow 8-9-09

Gulf Coast League

  • The GCL Mets allowed the GCL Marlins only 1 hit in beating them 5-1 Saturday.  The 2009 draft class was represented by 3 players.  RF Chase Greene walked leading off the 7th inning.  He stole 2nd and 3rd for his first 2 stolen bases of the season and scored on the catcher’s throwing error trying to get him out at 3rd.  He was 0 for 4 for the game.  C Nelfi Zapata singled in the 2nd and walked in the 4th as part of his 1 for 3 game.  1B Travis Ozga walked in the 4th, then in the 8th he singled and stole 2nd and 3rd which gives him 3 stolen bases for the season.  He finished the game 1 for 3.  For more see the box score and recap.

Appalachian League

  • The Johnson City Cardinals edged the Kingsport Mets 6-5 in 10 innings Saturday.  3 players from the 2009 draft saw action for the K-Mets, and unfortunately 1 of them lost the game.  P Brian Needham (1-3) pitched 2 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits and a walk while striking out 2.  1B Joseph Bonfe was hit by a pitch in the 2nd inning and singled in the 4th inning to go 1 for 4.  CF Darrell Ceciliani walked in the 7th, stole 2nd & 3rd for a total of 11 steals on the season, then scored.  He finished the night 0 for 4.  See the box score and recap for more.

New York-Penn League

  • The Jamestown Jammers beat the Brooklyn Cyclones 2-1 in 13 innings Saturday.  The game was scoreless after 9 and both teams scored 1 run in the 10th before the Jammers got the winner in the 13th.  3 2009 draftees played and 1 of them got the loss.  P Brandon Sage (2-1) allowed 2 runs, 1 earned, in 4 innings on 7 hits and 4 walks.  The unearned run came in the 13th when Sage made an errant pick off throw allowing a runner to go from 1st to 3rd.  That runner later scored.  SS Robbie Shields was 0 for 5.  1B Sam Honeck walked in the 11th inning and went 0 for 4.  For more see the box score and recap.

    At this point I’d almost rather not have a strong starter going every fifth day, I’d rather we lose and get a protected draft pick. Of course maybe Frankie’ll get in the game and I’ll get my wish anyway.

    We’re still in it, 10th worst team in the majors!

    We’re only five games ahead of the Friars, if they sweep us it’ll only be 4! Go top 10 pick!

      I’m a big fan of this idea in theory, but for me the big problem is we’re talking specifically about the Mets, the team whose owners adhere strictly to their friend the commissioner’s edict that teams should not pay over slot for their draft picks. So even if the Mets get a top pick they won’t pick a top talent. They’ll pick a signable player, someone they could’ve picked much later in the draft anyway. So absent new owners, the “let’s lose to get the draft pick” is a lose-lose strategy.
