Welp…the last pin has fallen. Following the Mets 3-2 victory over the San Fransisco Giants, they have placed David Wright on the 15 day DL. The Mets called up Andy Green from AAA to take his spot in the roster. David is the 11th man to hit the DL but more importantly the last of the core to hit the DL. The Mets now have Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes, David Wright and Carlos Beltran all on the DL at the same time. Ask any team in the majors to overcome that. Just for fun…lets revisit the Mets opening day lineup for 2009

Jose Reyes
DL since May 21 – ” Right calf tendinitis”

Daniel Murphy
Has not hit the DL…Last Man Standing

David Wright
DL since August 16 – “Post-concussion symptoms”

Carlos Delgado
DL since May 11 – “Right hip impingement”

Carlos Beltran
DL since June 22 – “Bone bruise, right knee”

Ryan Church
Traded to Atlanta Braves on July 11

Brian Schneider
DL from April 17-May 31 – “strained muscle in back”

Luis Castillo
Been Day to Day a few times but never hit DL “officially”

The ONLY silver lining in all this is we don’t have to hear all winter how the Mets had a crappy team, all that money and we didn’t make it to the WS, our team is better than yours, blah de blah blah.
In other words, we get the Pass for the Fail this season.
Get well quick, David.

Okay, well that loud ping you heard (no, not the one off of David Wright’s helmet) was the very last nail in the coffin on the 2009 season. Here’s to six weeks of Nats, I mean Mets baseball!

Did anyone see these comments on Newsday from Ken Davidoff regarding Jerry’s pre-game comments today? (I missed the game so didn’t see any pregame/post game shows either):
Manuel decided to use this opportunity to back the bus over Church once more. Asked if the organization has learned from its mistakes with Church last year, the manager responded: “You have to be careful into stereotyping individuals. David is a different animal, so to speak. How he is made up is a little different than, say, Ryan Church, in my opinion. That’s not to say that one is better than the other, but they’re different.”
In case any doubt lingered about where he was going with these “differences,” Manuel said, “With Ryan, there was always something thrown from leftfield – ‘We need to check that.’ That made it somewhat difficult to evaluate that particular situation.”
***********
What the heck is Jerry trying to say about Church there? They didn’t trust him when it came to his injuries? Jeeze, two concussions in a short period of time – it should have been a ‘no brainer’. —Sorry for the pun.

jerry needs to go, for many reasons.
no need to drag out and take a swipe at a former player like that. Especially since he never said a derogatory word about the mets (that I ever saw at least).

I had not seen this exact statement by Jerry that you’ve put here. I had heard a variation on it in his post game interview on SNY, and without having the direct quote in front of me my understanding/interpretation of what he said was “we are going to treat David differently than Ryan because David is a cornerstone of this franchise now and for the foreseeable future.”
As he was speaking I thought “Oh great, the team is going to be ‘more careful’ with David because he’s a bigger star than Church.” I mean, if that’s the case I’m happy for David that he’s going to be treated better, but it’s ridiculous that one head injury is more carefully regarded than another because of the status of the player.
If it were a shin bruise or something, I have less of an issue with status-based treatment, even though in any case it’s still unfortunate. But with a head injury? It’s as if the organization put Ryan Church on a plane to Colorado with a concussion last season because “Well, he’s ONLY Ryan Church.” That’s horrible.
