Post Game: Football Season

Even Luis Castillo knows baseball on Sundays is about to be buried in favor of football

New York got a late field goal to overcome San Francisco’s safety and win the defensive struggle 3-2 as time expired.  Well, not exactly.  The baseball Giants scored first in the top of the 5th when Eugenio Velez singled to drive in Eli Whiteside.  It was 1-0 San Francisco going into the bottom of the 5th.

In the bottom of the 6th something almost as unlikely as having your 4 best hitters on the disabled list simultaneously happened:  Luis Castillo hit a home run, a 2-run shot to give the Mets a 2-1 lead.

Met starter Mike Pelfrey was cruising when with 1 out in the top of the 8th the Giants got back-to-back doubles from Velez and Randy Winn to tie the game at 2-2.  Brian Stokes relieved Pelfrey and prevented Winn from scoring, keeping the game tied.  The Mets went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 8th.  Closer Francisco Rodriguez came on and sent the Giants down 1-2-3 in the top of the 9th.  The stage was set.

Jeff Francoeur led off the bottom of the 9th with an infield single.  Fernando Tatis sacrificed him to 2nd base, bringing up Daniel Murphy.  The Giants brought in left handed reliever Jeremy Affeldt to neutralize the left handed hitting Murphy but it didn’t work.  Murphy broke the 2-2 tie by singling to right on a 2-2 pitch, driving in Francoeur with the winning run and helping Met fans enjoy one of their last Sundays before football.

    Two points:

    1) Luis, where did THAT come from??? Wow.

    2) Jerry said after the game that “Wright could miss the rest of the season.”

I know Jerry exaggerates a bit, but that would be crushing. I know we’re not going anywhere, but it was somewhat comforting having David in there.

Since the words football where used…who is pumped for some hardcore J-E-T-S Defense baby! gotta love the new approach.

I’m a Giants fan but I will be interested from afar to see what Ryan brings to the Jets, especially defensively.

being too lazy to go look, I heard that Wright is going on the Dl (maybe the FO is actually getting a clue finally?)

Who did they call up? Pray it is a 3B, since I really dont want to have to see Tatis every day!

Just my luck, my “special” game is tomorrow (2nd row from the field seats). No Dw or the rest of the DL crew, and to add further insult, Livan is pitching!

Well, I am in the OF, so at least that should increase the odds that a few balls head our way!

At this point the Mets should just have an “Abled List”

      1. stickguy

        It would be shorter.

Sounds like COra should be on the DL now too. Might as well stick him on and call up another MI (as long as it isnt Berros). The still have that Valentin guy?

Pretty sad that the Mets DL team, on paper, would kick the snot out of the team they are ruolling out every day.

At least they are playing hard!

And Andy Green was the player called up.

He even beat 9/1 by more than a week! Good job andy!

4D will appreciate this (even if no one else will), but this will be the first time in a while that we get the traditional late-August into September “met auditions for next year”.

So far, Parnell might just have vaulted into the mix for the rotation (and man, a dark horse out of the blue like that would be a major shot in the arm!) Of course we need to see him do it a few more times, against better competition!

Now lets see who else can show something. I am looking forward to seeing Thole in a few weeks.

I wonder if there is any chance that Stokes could be looked at for a rotation spot (at least given a token shot at it?) Wouldn’t that be a blast if next years rotation ended up having Stokes and parnell in it! A good blast if the suceeded, and a kick in the teeth if they sucked…

First time in a while….I don’t think I recall ever seeing practically the whole AAA team up here this early.

Today was a rare game I missed – had a family function. I love those walk off wins…..
Sounds like Pelfry had it going on today – which is good to hear. I know San Fran is a light hitting team but anytime Pelf gets into the 8th is a good thing.

      And uh….thanks Cain…

      Get well quick, David.
