Pretty sad that if they are releasing him and paying the salary, it means no one would claim him on waivers.

This might shock you, but I will respectfully disagree. he has to pay Wags salary.
Why, you may ask? Well, let me tell you!
This is a pure sunk cost, since the Mets really have no use for his services this year (well, the pen could use him, but why bother?) So, they are paying the money anyway 9and would have if he never made it back).
So, it was in the budget.
Now, the only real value Wagner has to the Mets is what players he can bring back in return.
If Omar says take the whole (or majority) of the contract, he will get crap back (non prospect, or another bad contract).
But, if he takes back much or all of the salary, then there will be teams bidding with much better prospects.
So, look at this as spending money on prospects that they saved in the draft!
The Yankees used to be famous for this. They always seemed to make trades with a large talent disparity (in their favor) because they took contracts back.

OK, let me do this slower.
ask for team to take his salary = no trade, or crap back.
Pay the salary they already have to pay if they keep him = much better players back.
Right now, I’ll take the players!
