” I’m a loser baby / so why don’t you kill me” – Beck
Yeah that was kinda what I was think Luis Castillio was thinking last night after he botched that potential double play in the second inning of last nights game – but hey this team is already D.O.A !
Anyway it is time for the ” Strive for .500 edition” of ” This Day In Mets Infamy with Rusty”
Happy Birthday to utility infielder of the mid ’60′s Cliff Cook (1936)
Birthday wishes also go out to our 2010 starting left fielder ( I’m kidding – I think) Cory “Sully” Sullivan (1979)
New York Mets purchased relief pitcher Bill Connors from the Chicago Cubs on August 20, 1967.
New York Mets purchased past his prime starting pitcher Ray Burris from the New York Yankees on August 20, 1979. Funny thing is if you ever seen a picture of Ray , he was just as hefty as C.C Sabbathia!
New York Mets signed former Chicago Cub and Philadelphia Phillies infielder free agent Larry Bowa on August 20, 1985. Bowa was supposed to give us infield depth for the final stretch of the ’85 pennent chase but alas it went for naught as we lost the division to the St. Louis Cardnals. Larry Bowa is currently throwing tempertantrums as the third base coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers. (hmmmm next manager of the Mets???)
on this date in 2007 New York Mets traded Sean Henry and Jose Castro to the Cincinnati Reds for Jeff ” The Barbarian” Conine .
And lastly Mo Vaughn and Mrs. Buttersworth broke up when Mr. Buttersworth caught them in a compromising situation.

So 2006 is starting to become a vague memory. Wagner will be traded shortly as the Mets put him on waivers, Delgado is most likely gone. One or two bullpen guys short the last few years from getting the job done!! Oh well, now we need a power 1B, power LF, front line starter, and the other usual tweaks! I really hope somehow this can get done and Omar, if still here, which I believe he will be, works some magic and changes our hearts and minds. I mean Delgado gave us some outstanding numbers and production. Is he really not capable of giving us maybe 3/4 of that?? IDK

Who would have thought after ’06 we’d have 3 seasons with no playoffs. Yes, I’m quitting on this season, kill me.

Thats not a shock. We have all quit on this year. Its next year that is up in the air. I dont think the fans will be very happy if we fill one hole and look to 2011. This team needs to fill all the holes even if it means spending 10 million more. I think we deserve it and the Wilpons better acknowledge that!!!! Citi Field is still drawing very good crowds and money is being made! The suffering the last 3 years and the indifference this year justifies some extra cash being spent. But we all know less money will probably be what we get lol

Mmmm, Mrs. Butterworth. I’ll always remember one sticky Sunday morning I shared with her and Aunt Jemima in a Log Cabin. Best breakfast in bed I ever had.

And how is that cliff Lee trade looking! We couldn’t even just have freakin Johan. no, they had to get the equalizer. That’s the thing guys, the Mets have so many holes and apparently not enough funds, and I don’t think any Philly players are going anywhere.

Amazing…I thought the same thing. Ibanez and Lee, both great acquisitions. And we are going backwards. Is Lee a free agent after this year or do the Phils have him locked up for next year?? Please tell me NO!!

The Phils have a club option on Lee for next year. They can either pay him $8 mil to stay or $1 mil to go away. I imagine he’ll stay.

Wow, so yesterday you accused me of always making it about the Phillies and now you are making it about the Phillies. With their “Allstar” cast they have 11 more wins than us, if healthy we both agree we are pretty close to even in the standings at worst. Now all of a sudden Lee is Johan? Lee is damn good don’t get me wrong, but I don’t think Lee is in the same category as Johan. As for so many holes and not enough funds, who has said we do not have enough funds? Matt Cerrone? Keeping our payroll what it is now we would still have money to bring in a LF, SP and 1B. We have 25-30M to spend. I have already outlined various ways that money could be spent and STILL stay at our current budget. You also have to realize that while we have all the money to spend, the Phillies have none left and believe it or not will have holes themselves in the rotation, BP and bench. I for one am not concerned about the Phillies and what they have. I think it is much more important what we have and that we play well.

He’ll stay and agreviate. You guys for years to come and you’ll have johan a true #2 and that 20 plus mill a year to look at.

Hmmm, Johan a true #2. Does that make Hamels a #9?

I guess it makes him a #5 because according to deranged Mets fans Pelfrey is a #5 and they have almost identical stats.

That’s probably too logical a point to make with a Philly fan. And on Pelf I’m willing to give him another year at least. This year was so wacky.

So what about Hamels then?

8/20/2009-1:04pm at 1:04 pm (UTC -4)
IDK about Johan being a number 2 yet. It is a little worrisome that a start or two ago he wasnt throwing harder than 89-90 mph. He has lost speed off his fastball and isnt throwing 95 anymore. He will survive and do just fine at 92-93-94 but if he continues to drop even Johan wont be able to get it done with a 90 mph fastball

I would not expect a Phillies fan to understand stats but here goes. Johan had 3 CG’s last year compared to Cole’s 2. This year Cole has 1 CG and Santana does not have one yet, hell he could catch him tonight. LOL. Also, Cole is only averaging 5 2/3 innings per start, WOW. Compared to Santana who is averaging 6 2/3. But yeah whatever.

Bowa should have been offered the
job when Willie was fired.
He would have kicked some arse!
Happy 30th indeed to Sully who should
have been here all season.
And I remember Ray Burris well.
He was a BIG BOY…But not CC big.
Good job as always,Rustoleum!
