the level of stomach-punching losses that the mets keep handing the fanbase is astounding… it’s incredible really… just when you start to resign yourself to a lost season, this s**t happens…. i officially nominate this season as worst ever…

    1. Mr North Jersey

In my lifetime this is right there with 87 and I think if I am honest with myself it has surpassed 87.

    2. metsfan4decades

      I second that nomination.
Said the same thing on the last thread. Been watching for over 40 years and even though we’ve had more losses in past seasons, for me hands down, this is the worst season I’ve had to endure….

  2. fongy2

    Others have made the comparision
    and I don’t get it,MNJ.
’87 ended tough but THIS is unwatchable.Ollie is unwatchable!
    ’87,like every season b/t ’84&’90,
we were competitive and there was
hope until the last out of the season
or atleast until we were eliminated
which happened in very late September.
THIS team has been done since
before Memorial Day AND hope for
next season and beyond isn’t great
    RIGHT NOW.
Atleast Jerry showed a little something pulling Ollie when he did,
against who he did. But I screamed
out at my flat screen “wake up Wilpons
and do SOMETHING!”…Both my wife and
    dog thought I was crazy!
    And ya know,they’re right!
What the heck am I (or we)doing
wasting time on a beautiful early
    Sunday afternoon in late August
    watching this crap?

Well, it rained most all day here but yeah, I get your sentiment….

I put the season over a bit later than you did, when Beltran went down late June. It’s hard to watch, no doubt about it. Don’t know what I expect given the rotation we’ve got left and most of the guys we’re fielding.

Much like I needed to do in June, lower my expectations, I need to wrap my brain around the fact that we don’t have a ML caliber roster or rotation right now. That way, nothing I see should come as any surprise….

I give them kudos though today for battling back and coming dang close…
This is all on Ollie today.

    2. Mr North Jersey

Fongy I understand what you saying regarding being competitive and all in 87 but if my memory serves me correct 87 was supposed to be the season that would tell MLB that what the Mets did in 86 was no fluke. The start of a dynasty with the return of Doc, Daryll, Dykstra, Sid, Ojeda, Darling, and Aguillera and of course Keith and Gary among others and with all the injuries that year it was like this season with fans asking what else can go wrong?

It was a season with so many expectations that was mainly robbed due to injuries like this season except now in 2009 we do not have the recent memories of a championship to hold us over. Instead we have back 2 back years of epic fails to go along with our hated rivals peaking to defend their W.S. Title.

Yep that’s about it felt to me. All I remember is the pain much the way I think 2009 will be remembered.

    Just heard on ESPN…Fred Wilpon…
Yes, he lives…Says “Omar AND Jerry
will be back for next season”

    I have nothing to add.
I’ll leave it to you all.

I have been teetering on whether to keep my tickets for next year, given the fact that I can so easily buy less expensive tickets/better seats on StubHub. This seals it. Nice job Freddie.

  4. metfreak

I was at todays game and first off I felt like I was in Philly they outnumber all Met fans today but I don’t think I felt this way ever about any of my players but I HATE Perez !!!!!!!!!! They should fire Omar just for signing this waste of a ball player . They gave out mini Citi Field replica which was great but why give them to these low life Philly fans ? This team the last 3 yrs really makes me which they can move to S.F or LA and bring back the Giants or Dodgers

I was at the game today…my last game of the year. I gave up on the year 3 weeks ago at least and was ready for a stress free rest of the year,..once again when you thought they couldnt they tear your heart out today lol First off I am a fan that boo’s…loudly. I booed as loud as I could at Ollie. Many thoughts went through my head walking to my seat before the game and seeing so many Philly fans. My initial reaction is to want to punch them in the face and yell at them…Then I realized I have no ammo, reason, and would have to be insane. I would look like a child due to the fact they are the team we thought we would be after 06. They have achieved everything and us nothing. Pedro was 4 years ago!! 06 was 3 going on 4 years. AFter o6, after wanting to kill ourselves, we realized we had Reyes, Beltran, Wright all young guys and the division was ours…it hasnt been.

Random thoughts…Shneider is really hitting barely over .200? Minus Maine are pitching staff is pretty much all there and minus Santana we are horrible. Even with a healthy team it would have been tough this year…Green who we thought was good has been awful and very disappointing. Anyway I know a hit and run in that sitaution wasnt a bad play maybe even the right play but not in my mind…we were scoring and battling all game…we were catching breaks…we had a rally going with 0 outs…we had tying runs on…why hit and run. What if Frenchy K’s and its a strike him out throw him out? Worse case he K’s and we still have 2 on…IDK i know we have to be agressive but that was the wrong time in my mind.

I feel for you guys after this loss. Put the Phillies-Mets hatred aside for a second, I honestly feel sorry for the Mets and you, the fans. I mean… that was a Brad Lidge BLOWN SAVE just waiting to burst. Guys, I know you don’t want a Phillies fan’s pity, but…. this is a truly horrible season of epic proportions. I hope, for the goodness of this rivalry, things are completely different next season…

    1. whataputz

Matt, I genuinely decline your pity and offer you my most sincere fu** you. Keep the Philthy fans in the Philfy blogs.

      1. Mr North Jersey

        Dude not cool.

You just showed your ugly side.

        Sorry Matt

      2. prismo

        Stay classy whataputz…

      3. metsfan4decades

What would even posses you to make such a comment? Matt’s comment was at the very least, sincere. He’s a true Philly fan with sympathy for us Met fans and the way this season has played out for us this year.

There are sore losers, and then well, there’s you….

        1. whataputz

So you want to be pitied? I’m from New York, I don’t take that kindly…..plus it was 2 am and I was kinda sauced :)

          1. whataputz

And you know what, Philly fans should not talk any smack. Yes, you’re on a nice little run, but up until3 years ago you were an irrelevant team that nobody as much as gave two thoughts about. And the second Philly has a bad year they will go back to being what everyone’s used to them being…nothing.

          2. mattsmith

Whataputz, I run the PhilliesPhandom blog, so I’m a blog “owner” on this great network of blogs, so I can float around and comment on other blogs as I see fit.

All due respect, but what are the Mets used to being? Compared to the Yankees… not much, right?

All I’m saying is, as a long-suffering Philadelphia fan, I know what this is like for Mets fans. Thus, it’s difficult to laugh and talk smack and such… because we’ve been there before.

I wouldn’t hold your breath hoping for a bad year in Philly anytime soon, my friend. It could be a while…

            :)

          3. whataputz

Yeah they are a great team right now, not denying that, but as a person born in the late 80′s up until ’07 I never as much as had a reason to say the word Phillies outside of “The Mets are playing the Phillies”.

          4. prismo

But it’s okay for baseball fans of different teams to talk about baseball. One of my best friends is a Phillies fan, and while we give each other a hard time about our respective teams on occasion, we also have meaningful baseball dialogue almost every day. It’s all about showing respect.

          5. whataputz

And me and my friends throw the words “F*** you” around like it’s currency, I guess we just come from different generations. And take pity as disrespect too, but maybe we’re just different you and me…and what are you doing up at 4 in the morning?m Do you not sleep?

          6. prismo

            I work 4am-1pm every day.

  7. wannybackstra

Hitting and running with Francoeur at the plate and 2 strikes was pure genius. While a strike ‘em out throw ‘em out double play should have been expected, the Mets managed to make the situation even worse and turn it into a triple play.

Jerry got what he deserved for trying such a stupid play.

    1. trs86

I thought the same but then I understood by looking at the lineup why he did it. I may not have but I understand.
Chances are you would have gotten maybe the guy at 3B in the steal and would have taken the DP away from Tatits, that was what Jerry was thinking was worse case. Best case he was thinking it could tie the game. Medium he expected to have 2nd and 3rd 1 out. I can understand it. If it was not DP Tatis behind him I could not see it.

      1. whataputz

Why would you hit and run with a guy that strikes out every other at bat.

        1. Kingman 26

          22K in 162 PA…..

Impressive work today Putz—rudeness and factual wrongness make a healthy combo…..

          1. whataputz

So Franeurs reputattion and career stats are not of a man that strikes out alot? I’m assuming you’re showing me his stats since he’s been a met…his career has been longer than that.

        2. trs86

Uhm, from watching the game, when players leave on the pitch it is called a steal. When players leave on the hit it is called a hit and run. From my vantage point that was a double steal. But regardless, the point is the manager assumed worst case you have a guy in scoring position 2 outs instead of 1st and 2nd for DP Tatis.

          1. whataputz

Ok..so then why are you trying to steal second base with Daniel Murphy? Whats to stop Ruiz from throwing to second? Brad Lidge clear;y had nothing and was getting ripped. Obviously hindsight is 20/20, but why run yourself out of an inning when he’s putting the ball on a Tee?

          2. whataputz

and I’m not so sure your definition of a hit and run is correct. If the runners waited for the hitter to make contact to run, the fielders would not be running to cover the base, and thus there would not be a huge hole either between first and second or between second and third, thus taking the advantage away. also I’m pretty sure the runner leaves every time contact is mae by a hitter, so in that case I guess every play in which a runner is on base is a hit and run.

My definition of a hit and run is the runner steals the base in order t create a huge hole for the hitter to hit it in, and then the runner for the most part will get two bases.

          3. trs86

Well not exactly, there is a difference in a hit and run and a straight steal. A hit and run is like a safety steal, they look back usually to see if the ball is hit after running about half way. In a straight steal you are running regardless of hit or not. Otherwise it would be just a plain steal and not a HIT and run. Normally a baserunner would pause to see where the ball is going and follow normal baseball procedures based on where the ball is hit. In a hit and run you are already half way and go on contact.

          4. whataputz

Then why do we see so many times a blown hit and run resulting in the runner being thrown out at second? Why not just not run when contact isn’t made? It’s a hit and run because the hitter is swinging at the pitch no matter what the location is instead of letting them steal and thus its a hit and run…i could be wrong but that’s my interpretation. Either way this is a stupid argument if you want to call it an argument.

          5. Mr North Jersey

Ok now I know we all know what a Hit and Run is right?

            Let’s not over complicate it.

Simple, A Hit and Run is when the runner (usually at 1st) takes off for 2nd.The hitter’s job is to make contact and put the ball in play. It is done to stay out of the double play and is hard to defend against. The runner is in motion with the pitch and does not wait for contact to be made before running.

  8. udontmesswthejohan

Yeah, this team isn’t snake bitten.
