Santana Done For 2009, Back For 2010

The bad news is that Johan has to have surgery, the good news is it’s only minor arthroscopic surgery, the bad news is that it is his left elbow, the good news is that most likely he has been pitching in pain for a while and could be back the pain free Johan that we all knew in 2008.

This from Mets.com:

Mets left-hander Johan Santana will undergo minor arthroscopic surgery to clean up bone chips in his left elbow and will miss the remainder of the season.

Santana is expected to fully recover and be ready for Spring Training, the Mets said in a statement on Tuesday.

I hope the pain explains the decline in all of his peripherals, but elbow surgery is scary. I really worry that we could be seeing the end of his primer years.

Come on it’s just to clean up some bone chips it’s not ligiment related or TJ. Lets just settle down a little.

      prime*

Did I overreact? What did I say that was an overreaction?

Sheesh, if it is so minor and it DOESN’T explain the decline in his peripherals then he’s past his prime.

So you don’t think that something minor that is causing pain could result in lower numbers? The guy could not throw his slider this year. It shows in his stats. FB is barely down but he stopped throwing his slider. Yes you are overreacting. The guy should have won a Cy Young last year and now he is no longer a primer pitcher?

Should have won a Cy Young? No. And YES, it could explain it. Read my comment you freak.

I’m teasing with the freak comment btw.

            It’s ok we all are.

You can make bones about Linecum still having won the Cy but if we had not blown those games for him and he finished with 20 wins I think he would have won. Regardless you are basing his “declining peripherals” on this season and he needs minor surgery. Was he an elite pitcher last year? So now after this season he is no longer an elite pitcher?

          4. sabermetrician

Look at his peripherals they began to decline last year. He still had a good year, but usually peripherals will decline prior to overall performance.

          5. trs86

Yeah those 2nd half peripherals were TERRIBLE last year.

So you want to limit the sample size we’re looking at. Okay, Perez has been great in ten starts in his career. I’ll go find those ten starts right now…

          7. sabermetrician

Oh, but I forgot, you were all for the Perez resigning. I guess you already know about those 10 starts.

For one you should try reading the site and my comments more, it would help your argument and most likely educate you. I NEVER wanted Perez resigned. I wanted Wolf and Garland.
Two if this was a debate you just lost. You compared Oliver Perez to Johan Friggin Santana.

          9. sabermetrician

Where did I compare Perez to Santana? TRS you have always been an ass, nothing new.

            Hmm…

    Ay Dios Mio!

Can no one on the Mets escape the injury bug?

  3. metsfan4decades

Good news, I hope. I won’t breath easy until I see him on the mound opening day.

What do you want to bet that if we were in this race right now, Santana would have pitched, pain and all – and put off this surgery until the end or we were out of it? If I recall, he pitched with a torn miniscus in his knee all of last September.

    1. trs86

There is no doubt that he would be out there every day pitching through pain like he most likely has most of the season.

Perez on his way back to NY as well to get his knee checked out.
So considering he too might be done this year – or at least miss one start – I honestly cannot come up with 5 starting pitchers the Mets can use this upcoming week. We have Pelfrey, Redding and Figgy.

Good thing 1 Sep is right around the corner and we can call up some arms – no matter how inexperienced or terrible they might be. Otherwise, we’d probably be seeing something like one BP arm per inning to get through some games, or something equally bizarre….

Replacing Perez should be a good thing though. lol

      1. stickguy

Well, somebody (actually 5 somebodies) must be making starts up in Buffalo. Whoever is already on the 40 man, come on down! You are the next contestant on, SP for a day!

        1. metsfan4decades

          LOL!

  5. GravediggerHebner

According to the FAN Putz has been “shut down for the season,” at least that’s what I believe I just heard Minko say in his last update. Trust, but verify.

    1. stickguy

Figures. Now they wont know if he can pitch so they will decline his option, and he will go elsewhere (for no return) and have a huge year.

      1. metsfan4decades

Dang. When will it ever end?

I honestly can’t think of one single thing that went right this year for our NY Mets…

        1. whataputz

          Luis Castillo?

          1. sabermetrician

Ouch, you are right, but that’s sad.
