Breaking: Oliver Perez to have season-ending surgery

I agree Ollie, this team stinks!

I agree Ollie, this team stinks!

Both Kevin Burkhardt and Bart Hubbuch are reporting that Oliver Perez will have season-ending knee surgery. He should be ready for the start of spring training.

This leaves the Mets with a rotation of…Pelfrey, Redding, Parnell, Figueroa, and oh god I just threw up all over myself.

Update: Lance Broadway has been called up replace Perez’ roster spot.

lol Too bad they can’t add a brain transplant.

  2. mattsmith

This injury is actually good news for Mets fans, I’d imagine.

    1. metsgirl31

For me, personally, its not good news really cuz its just too ridiculous anymore. Literally we are losing people daily and its downright weird. If Perez were the only pitcher or even player to go down for the rest of the year then maybe it wouldn’t be a huge loss but its too much to take getting bad news everyday. But that’s just my opinion…

      1. gategem

I have been following baseball since the Brooklyn Dodgers days and I have never seen a season such as this one.

        1. gategem

lol BTW I’m at an age where the only coverage I’ll have under the Obama/Pelosi Health plan will be a visit to the Jack Kevorkian clinic.

          1. saltygary

Wrong place for this crap guy. Why don’t you go troll on the Huff Post website.

          2. Kingman 26

Yeah, I am with Salty….geez, we care about your immense baseball knowledge, not your politics.

And if you are an old and poor person, you might get MORE from Obama/Pelosi…..

          3. gategem

It was meant as a joke. Didn’t you see the “lol.” It was not meant to offend anyone and if it did I’m sorry. In the future if I choose to post here (which I probably won’t) I’ll try and keep it to serious baseball matter.

          4. prismo

You’re going to stop posting here because of what King and Salty said? Thin skin… I hope you reconsider.

          5. trs86

Eh some are touchy right now about politicis, things are not quite going as planned.

          6. Kingman 26

Not that at all TRS, not even remotely….our society is awash in utter political nonsense and lies, and I come here–and follow sports—as an enjoyable escape.

I don’t enjoy coming here and reading the same political silliness and baloney I see and hear everywhere else.

Bush and Cheney were not Nazis, Obama is not remotely a Marxist or Socialist, and I am sick to death of people repeating the utter horses**t they see and hear on Fox and MSNBC.

          7. trs86

I am not saying in terms of Democrat or Republican Kingman. I am saying in terms of the country which makes people very touchy, everyone picks sides.

          8. Kingman 26

Gotcha TRS…..I am at the point where it is VERY clear that no real, substantial, positive change will come to this country as long as the only ones who occupy office are the Repubs and Dems….they are, with minimal cosmetic differences, the same, when it comes to every issue of significance..

We need more choices to have real choice.

          9. prismo

            Omar/Jerry 2012?

          10. saltygary

Not touchy one bit. If people want to talk politics maybe we need the real dirty political blog.

It just has no place here because unfortunately people either get offended at those things or they actually believe the BS that their being feed.

  3. whataputz

Hard to see how we’ll be playing spoiler with a rotation of Pelf, and 4 names I will not list because I don’t feel like crying.

  4. Mr North Jersey

LoL you just can’t make this shyt up.

All we now need is a folk song to tell the story of 2009 and we are all set.

Pelfrey and Murphy must have armed guards escorting them everywhere they go.

    1. gategem

lol You realize the fans are not safe. The next time we attend a game at Citi we’ll probably catch the swine flu.

  5. CaseStreet

Isn’t the term “season-ending” a bit misleading? Didn’t the season end when we couldn’t even win games during the easy part of the schedule. I think it ended on the West Coast trip.

  6. whataputz

At this point I’m just hoping we can land a nice draft pick..keep losing Mets!

  7. whataputz

Alot of people say the Pedro deal was bad, but at least he gave us some kind of production. Is it that ridiculous to think that Ollie will not win another 10 games in a Mets uniform? I mean talk about getting zero production, this guy stunk from day 1 of this contract.

  8. Kingman 26

Titanic 2009, thy name is New York Mets.

It really is not funny anymore, or sad, it is downright bizarre.

Who the hell is left among even close to front-line players?

    1. CaseStreet

I’m scared to even name any healthy Mets players.

      1. Kingman 26

LOL! Yeah, good point, glad I did not mention any names!

Although the list would have been shorter than an Ollie start…..

  9. CaseStreet

Tejada and Davis will be playing some October baseball!

  10. gategem

lol I understand that during spring training Omar issued a little known and publicized response to a question that may have been prophetic:

    “Iceberg, what Iceberg?”

  11. saltygary

I can’t believe that I was worried about Castillo’s health and production to start the season.

    1. CaseStreet

Damn it, Salty! You had to jinx him.

  12. tkfj

I just hope people don’t try to rationalize his season or signing, because of the injuries he has had. Sure he might have pitched better, its kind of hard not to, considering, but the guy is a head case and his only consistancy is being inconsistant. Not worth 12 mill.

    1. Kingman 26

      Maybe, maybe not.

Maybe he was indeed in less than great shape and got hurt at the WBC and was never healthy.

Maybe in 2010 he is the 2004/2007 Ollie and he becomes the number 2 starter.

Or maybe he just sux forever.

Regardless, don’t take his poster down, as we shall be seeing a lot more of Ollie.

His suckitude and injuries combine to make him among the most untradeable guys in the game.

      1. whataputz

I think he owes it to the fans, and even to himself to bust his butt this offseason and really work hard to get himself in game shape. It’s time for young Ollie to become a man.

        1. Kingman 26

I agree with this 100%, but the only problem is, isn’t that what we all were thinking last offseason?

You are SO right, and let’s hope he does come back in shape and ready to kick butt, but if he was totally out of shape and a head case this year, after signing his first really huge deal, and getting married, and getting the confidence the Mets showed in him, should we expect any more next year?

And yes, I know I was a pro-Ollie guy last winter, and people could have asked me the exact same thing….

          1. stickguy

2011 will be his big year. After all, it is the last year of his contract, so Boras will hire him a personal trainer and an “enforcer” to make sure he gets in shape, and has a big year for his next contract. And good luck to that sucker team.

Why the heck didnt Omar act like he had a clue and just let him walk after he declined arbitration? Just sign a couple of the many available vets begging for jobs to tide them over for another year.

      2. stickguy

he is far from the most untradeable. Pitching is always in demand, and lefties always seem to be hotter items.

and being in his 20s with only 2 years remaining is certainly a plus.

Not saying you wouldnt have to eat some $ or take back a bad contract, but he is certainly tradable.

Guys like Vernon Wells, now he is untradeable.

  13. stickguy

the Wilponsa are probably really bummed about the teams falling record.

Now they will have a high draft pick, and will be on the hook for a bigger signing bonus!

I can’t imagine what they would do if they really ended up with the #1 pick, and had to deal with Boras. ALthough I can almost guarantee he wouldn’t get signed!

    1. whataputz

      Is Harper rep. by Boras?

      1. stickguy

“adivsed” at this point, being as he is only 16 and in HS, and not even eligible for the draft next year, unless they sneak through a loophole (having him graduate HS early and start at CC I think).

Even if they get him, and scrounge up the 15 mill, how long before he is of any value to the Mets on the field?

        1. whataputz

I think he is going to grad early. He’s supposed to be a phenom so I’d like to think he’d be out on the field by the time he’s 17 or 18..especially with that contract.

        2. steveo

I know harper as one of our local heros he is a great kid I am here in vegas where he Lives and helps with younger kids my sons age. He has finished school early and is in csn junior college and will be eligible for next years draft

  14. gipperpdx

How this team hasn’t fired the entire organization’s trainers and medical staff / consultants is beyond me.

    1. Kingman 26

      Yeah, this is beyond crazy.

They better have a totally new team in place, beginning to develop new spring training health routines, immediately after the WS.

Another spring with everyone injured and getting off to a poor start is absolutely unacceptable.

  15. whataputz

Why isn’t Carter playing? He;s prob one of the best bat we got!

    1. stickguy

is he even offically Mets property yet, or is he still a PTBNL?

anyway, if he arrives, I would at least have him and evans splitting time in LF to see what they got. no real point in playing sullivan everyday, other than to fill out the lineup card.

      1. whataputz

Yeah I was talking about this earlier. I like what I’ve seen from Sullivan, but he’s a bench player and we know it, so no point in playing him over the kids.

  16. stickguy

I’m ready to go all in with kids on 9/1. If they have to be on the 40 man anyway, call them up.

lets see Tejada at SS (A Hern stinks) and Thole behind the plate (give Snieds the rest of the year off).

Evans and Carter can play LF.

A nice little taste to get their feet wet, and see what they can bring to the table.

And before TRS gets his knickers twisted, I am not endorsing giving any of them a job next year, but they can all be in the mix in ST to try and win a spot (F mart too I guess), and if not, Buffalo can have an actual good team for a change!

Not sure if their are any other pitchers that should come up. Hot and Mejjisa still need seasoning, so leave them alone, and I haven’t paid enough attention to see if anyone else deserves it, other than Bostick who should have been up 2 months ago.

The Mets could actually have a very good AA team next season, and scarily, a AAA with some talent on it.

Now just need a new FO organization to not foul them all up.

    1. CaseStreet

“The Mets could actually have a very good AA team next season, and scarily, a AAA with some talent on it.”

They might’ve this year but they were all playing at Citi.

    2. darknova306

You sure you want to risk the kids catching the injury bug on the major league team? Just kidding… sort of…

    3. trs86

LOL, I am all for and looking forward to seeing them play Stick. Just not ready to count on them.

    4. wannybackstra

They won’t put the 19 year old Tejada on the 40 man and start his service time clock.

      1. trs86

Yeah most likely not but I did learn it’s based on days on the 40 man so those 30 days would not be a big issue. I always thought it was a clock but based on the explantion on MLBTR it is not.

  17. metsfan4decades

    Not surprised.

There is no way this is all just bad luck or coincidence. Need a new medical staff. Period.

  18. whataputz

Why is Schneider playing!!! A. He doesn’t put the team in a good position to win. B. He’s old as balls and will be done with this team after the season.

  19. whataputz

“Even if the two players don’t work out, you’ve saved salary.”- Keith Hernandez on the Billy Wagner trade.

This is exactly what annoys me. When you have to worry about 3 million dollars, you shouldn’t own the New York Mets. Granted the Mets payroll is the highest in the NL, but you’re talking about a NY team with a brand new stadium, and you’re worrying about 3 million! That’s not good.

    1. trs86

It does not say we are worried about salary. It is saying that they played it safe by getting 2 players and 3+ M. Instead of risking arbitration. We all have our ideas about what would have happen but no one knows for sure. So the Mets played it safe. Nothing great or nothing bad about it. Safe.
