Ok so the Mets are at the beginning of the end to this miserable season. Given the situation that has befallen the Mets this season, David Wright who was drilled in the head with a 95 mph fastball and Carlos Beltran who has had a bruise for more than half of the season it seems are both on their way back. David is already back and playing every other day but is this ballsy or just plain stupid.
David suffered post concussion syndrome with the fastball he took to the head and the Mets did the right thing by putting David Wright on the DL. Wright publicly admitted his desire to return to the club as soon as possible. Now given the situation with Ryan Church, I would have hoped the Mets would play it EXTREMELY cautious with David considering what he means to the ball club. It would appear as if the players run the Mets as Wright found himself right back where he said he would be and with the club. The Mets are going NO WHERE yet they are putting Davids health on the line every time up there. I understand the influences of the male ego in this but David is making 11 million this year and 14 million next year, why would we do anything to jeopardize this players health?
“If I got home without playing this season, my mind is going to kill me thinking I got hurt during the season and I couldn’t get back. You don’t want that in your head… People keep asking me, ‘Why don’t you sit back for the rest of the season?’ I don’t want to sit back. I’m a ballplayer. I play every day. When you’re a ballplayer, your job is being able to rehab yourself, and if that’s the last game of the season, then play the last game of the season. That’s what we’re here for, that’s what we get paid for… So I’m doing my best, and hopefully nothing happens and everything goes right and I can be with them.â€
Carlos Beltran is another one. Carlos has been on the DL since June 22 with a bruised knee. We have heard everything from players advice for Beltran to rest to Beltran needing surgery and being out all next year. Given all this stuff, Beltran is working his way to make it back to the club. Beltran went 1-3 in a rehab assignment today and should be back sometime mid September. What I want to know is…for what? Why are the Mets going to allow him to put himself in a position to perhaps cause more damage to his knee? Beltran is making 18.5 million this year and 18.5 million next year.
I know there’s a school of thought that if a player can play, just let them play but I would like those people to consider what transpired this year with the Mets. The Mets sent 19 people to the DL and are entering the off season with alot of question marks. The last thing the Mets need is to add more problems to next year. They do not need Wright or Beltran anymore this year as they are no where near in contention for anything. Why dont the Mets just punt the ball? Why not just shut down Wright and Beltran for next year where their presence will be more useful? Now im sure people would feel uncomfortable with Wright and Beltran sitting at home, collecting a fat check while doing nothing for it…especially if they are healthy enough to play.
What worries me is that while these players(to some people) may seem brave and courageous, it puts the Mets in a bad spot. What if something happens to Wright or Beltran…who’s to blame? The Mets for allowing them to come back or the players for trying to play through the pain? My money is on the Mets getting the negative press and if im right…why would the Mets continue to put themselves in this position? Why would the Mets put so much of their future on the line for a doomed season? Do you believe what these players are doing is ballsy or just plain stupid….
What do you think? Do you think the Mets did the right thing in allowing Wright and Beltran to come back?…are they trying to enhance Beltrans trade ability by showing he can still play?
