Hey guys – sorry it took me basically the entire season to find out about this site. And I was wondering where a lot of you had gone over at the “other” site.

As for the game itself Misch seems to be following the Fernando Nieve model of creating intrigue about a player that otherwise has been trash his entire career. Looks good now, but probably the minute we star to consider Misch a viable rotation candidate for next year, the bloom will come off the rose.

      Welcome to the site!

more the merrier. I was recruiting Vcarver last night. He seemed to be getting frustrated arguing with that Lorenzo dude all day! I have a feeling some lucky people will be happy when he gives up his (daddy’s) season tickets next year (the lucky people being the ones that sit around him).

as to Misch, who knows. He seems to be a little Moyerish I guess.

And Jamie Moyer was cut a few times (and I think back in the minors at an advanced age, pretty much on the trash heap) before it all came together in Seattle for him.

Kid seems to know how to pitch, and that goes a long way.

He may not be the answer for the #2 spot behind Johan, but I like the idea of having him in the great ST competition to fill out the rotation (losers to the pen) next year!

Ha! I saw those arguments between Vcarver and Lorenzo….

Welcome Constanza, you have been promoted to heaven. Well compared to Metsblog comment section anyway.

      1. constnza81

Thanks Trs. As I said, yours and others running this place – the input has been missed and after being one of the more vocal metsbloggers for years have found myself withdrawing.

Just get involved with an ESPN affiliated NBA blog myself and one of my first actions was working with the other co-author about our rules and pet peeves with commentors. One of the things he came up to, which he borrowed from the Portland Trail Blazers blog BlazersEdge, was called, don’t be “that guy.” Hit those sites to read who “that guy” is. While the Lorenzo’s of the world are a total bore, I think there are also a number of “that guys” at metsblog who may come across as intelligent posters, but stymie debate by threadjacking and arguing around the clock.

Watched the game. It’s amazing how the Mets can always seem to avoid the sweep by winning that last game AND somehow managing to bang out numerous hits in that game they couldn’t do the first games of the series….16 hits???

Pat Misch – he’s never going to be a hard thrower but he seems to have some idea out there on how to get batters out with finesse. What I really like about him – after watching the back to back HRs he gave up – is he stays composed on the mound. Opposite of watching Pelfrey and Maine out there get increasing frustrated when things are going well. If nothing else, he could be considered a good, long man for the BP, and someone who can make a spot start, if necessary and jump into the rotation in case of injuries. And here’s hoping this year is just some incredible bad luck and we don’t have injuries to more than half the starting rotation like we did this year.

Josh Thole: I heard his post game interview on SNY. Seems well suited for playing in NY. Has a good sense of humor about things for someone so young. His debut certainly went better than FMart’s – didn’t it?

Meant: ‘when things AREN’t going well’….

  3. stickguy

If the Mets can afford it, they need to hiring a cloning firm and create Mollie.

    Misch’s head and ollies arm.

Or send Igor in for Pat’s brain…

Hey guys…Im starting to become very concerned on the chatter I have been hearing during the last few weeks or so…Now I must admit everything I am hearing is not from the organization itself, but sometimes when you keep hearing the same speculation over and over there is much truth in it. Many radio ppl, analyst, and random ppl are stating the Mets are not going to spend the money to even bring us back to the payroll of this year. Many people believe we are going to be told our guys will be healthy and we will make a run for it with few upgrades. Of course the whole Maddoff thing has been lingering, which I put little to no stock in, but it has been out there alot! Over on Mets Blog Omar is saying he will have to be creative in putting together the 2010 team?? Is that a subtle way of saying the checkbook is closed to some degree?? In the same post over there, a 3 year plan is being suggested stating we are not a couple of free agaents away from conteding on a serious level? Geez, I disagree with all this. We have discussed on here ways this team can be right back in the mix and maybe even a favorite with just simply duplicating this years payroll..IDK I usually dont put much stock in this heresay but it continues to grow and Im afraid eventually it will be all fact! Anyway sign Lackey, Figgins/Crawford, bring in Hudson if Castillo can be dealt. Or Castillo can stay imo he has earned it. Bring in one power bat and lets see what happens. I think this can be accomplished.

    1. prismo

I don’t see any way they sign Lackey. The money just isn’t there. Ideally your plan would be a good one, but I don’t see it happening. Lackey’s probably going to sign for $15+ million a year.

      1. wannybackstra

If the Mets have $30m to spend and they can get Lackey for $15-16 I think they can make him fit. A guy like Marlon Byrd would be good in LF for approxiamtely $5m — good defense, gap hitter.

That would leave $10m to futz around with bargains behind the plate (there are plenty including Jose Molina and Josh Bard), a couple of inexpensive bullpen arms, Cora and maybe another reclamation starting pitcher.

    2. trs86

I actually think that the Wilpons will borrow money if they have to to keep us at this year’s payroll just so the media will shutup.

    3. Mr North Jersey

I believe what Matt is referring to over at Matt’s Blog is the ESPN Jayson Stark article where Minaya was quoted to say “we have to be very creative and very open-minded about how we put this team together for next year.”.

You have to agree with Minaya’s statement think about it.

      1. Most of the players he could trade are recovering from injuries and their trade value is low so no way he is going to trade them right now.

      2. Even his minor league talent’s best prospects are considered to be a few years away from truly being considered chips he can use to get a very good player in here for 2010.

      3. While Free Agency is a means to an end you think the Mets will be the only team bidding on Lackey? No, and as soon as the 1st team shows up and guarantees Lackey a five year deal the Mets will pull out faster than, well let’s just say fast.

It’s almost like a perfect storm designed to keep us from reloading for a chance at a ring in 2010. We will need what we have yet to have in 2009, a few breaks to go our way.

Matt’s quote where he say “…the Mets need a three-year, re-building plan…” I think is not realistic. You are going to pay Santana, Krod, Beltran and Wright to sit around and wait for a chance at winning in 2012? If we are going to rebuild over 3 years who is to say we will be competitive in 2012?

No you have to try and win now you do not bring in the likes of Santana and Krod so you can try and win in 2012. Fans will not stand or sit for that and if Matt thinks otherwise he has no clue what fans are thinking.

      1. stickguy

I’ll try to set your mind at ease!

1st, I think you are taking Cerone’s comment too literally (that is, gettin ghung up on the word rebuilding). What he meant, from looking at the context, is before they start the Omar special of chasing after a name, is to make a PLAN of how they want to approach the next 3 year cycle to mkae the team strong and sustainable.

So, no, they aren’t going to rebuild in the traditional (think, Pirates) sense.

You are rgith though that they likely won’t go 5 years on Lackey, but at big money, they are right not to.

for your point #1, true, it is hard to trade guys who missed 2/3 of the season to injury, but again, I don’t think he would be looking to trade beltran or reyes anyway, and delgado should be walking. So kind of a moot piont.

I wil ldisagree with your oint #2. Guys in AA are not years away from being tradeable (I think that is what you meant, that he can’t even trade them for any value for a couple of years?) Ike Davis, Mejjia, Holt, even Thole, Neise (if he didn’t blow the hammy) would all be very attractive trade chips that could bring in a player for 2010.

Guys like Flores are a few years away from being possible for the show, but are likely highly regarded enough to be the centerpiece of a trade for real talent now (that of course comes with a big price tag!)

        1. constnza81

Kirk Nieuwenhuis should also be added to that list of chips that could contribute sooner instead of later. CF prospect, went on an unconscious run in A+ ball and since being promoted to Bingo, has done more of the same. Legit 5-tool guy who’s gotten the attention of BA and BP recently. If the Mets send him to winter ball and he continues to tear it up, he could cetainly be sold as a mid-season call-up for a lower market team (or ahem, the Mets).

          1. stickguy

I like kirk. Exactly the kind of guy to keep, especially as part of a 3 year plan (AKA looking further ahead then next year).

Beltran has bad wheels, and 2 years left on his contract. So, let’s see, having a CF ready to step in FT by 2012 might be a good thing, right?

Or ignore the fact (yes Omar, talking to you!), and trade all OFs away, and scramble to overpay a washed up dude like Damon to take the job.

          2. Mr North Jersey

Hi Constnza81, Let me be the 1st to say Welcome to T.R.D.M.B. looking forward to you being part of the community. If I may, can I ask what if anything did you see that made you decide to join our growing community?

          3. constnza81

Mr NJ – was in the comments section of metsblog this morning and saw Stickguy mention this other site. Checked it out, saw who was running, remembered that I enjoyed reading the debate that usually came from said bloggers, remembered my own dismay about the degeneration of the comments section at MB and figured I would throw my hat in the ring. Job and personal life keep me from commenting as much as I’d like – but when I do look to comment, I’m just looking for an environment where even where people don’t agree, they at least are open to your opinion and see merit in it which is how I’ve pegged many of the founding fathers here in my time at MB.

          4. Mr North Jersey

Well I wanna give StickGuy a BIG THANKS for spreading the word about our Blog.

I want to assure you that here you are guaranteed to find people that will not agree with your opinion (LoL) but you will also find that your opinion will be challenged with lively debate pro and con and you will be free to post your opinion without fear of waiting for moderation so long as you do not use vulgar language which I’m sure you won’t.

            Welcome Aboard.

          5. constnza81

Disagreements are great. As long as people are as open to my opinion as I’m supposed to open to theirs.

          6. stickguy

            checks in the mail, right?

          7. Mr North Jersey

LoL Stick, I will give you 15% of whatever I get ;)

        2. Mr North Jersey

I will refrain from getting into a discussion over what Matt really meant to say as it will get us nowhere. I will say that for me when I read someone say the “Mets need a 3 year rebuilding plan” followed by “I believe Mets fans will see them through it”. I take that as not a metaphor for something else but I have been known to be literal so maybe you are right also.

When I spoke about guys recovering I did not mean just Beltran or Reyes I meant:
Beltran, Reyes, Perez, Maine, Putz, Niese, and FMart

The Minor League guys you mentioned Ike Davis, Mejjia, Holt, and Thole, I think are good but still need another year where they play stellar ball before teams get excited about them.

  5. stickguy

I am getting tired of hearing about the budget, as if that is the sole determining factor of whether they are good ro bad next eyar.

I would be happy if the payroll was the same or a bit lower, if it means they managed to bring in (or up) some talent that wasn’t wildly overpaid.

Most “big name” fas (the ones that you have to expand the payroll for) don’t end up erning their money, and often end up being busts, since you are paying for what they did years earlier. Or, you end with with guys like Ollie.

better a more manageble payroll (with room to actually bring on someone at the trade deadline!) by working in some rookies or young guys (Thole at C platoon say, Ike davis when ready, Neiunhaus (sp?) in a couple years when Beltran is done, A neise or neive for the 5 hole), instead of paying a couple million to stiffs like Livan or mediocrities like Redding.

That, and hopefully making some trades for guys that aren’t just salary dumps (a tremendous way to use your farm, if you trade from strength).

Oh well. enough rambling. But I can’t wait to spend the off season coming up with many creative solutions, only to have Omar botch it up!

    1. CaseStreet

It’d be nice to see a nice mix of FA’s, Arb Guys, and Rookies. Many of the midwest teams have this kind of mix. (e.g., Brewers, Rockies)

    2. JoeR

Yes agreed. I just hope we get to the same payroll or slightly below. Unfortunately with our system we need to spend on free agents. This fan base, including myself, wont settle for a significant cut in the payroll. Not with the fact it cost 25,000 for 2 season tickets at Citi and not great seats lol. Its just all the talk out there is starting to gain steam meaning Im hearing it from different outlets more and more. Yes, these ppl and outlets I speak of, for the most part know nothing about the plans Omar and the Wilpons are deriving but usually when info is out all over the place there is some truth sprinkled in there.

      1. stickguy

25K? I guess even if I was local, I wouldn’t be getting season tixs!

Also, the problem with assuimng that all the rumors (smoke) means there really is fire, is that for the most part it was a couple of pieces of pure speculation that everyone else picked up on (such as that lady with her Madoff book).

But, if enough people repeat a rumor, it must be true, right?
