In case you have not heard…

John Maine, who’s been on the DL since June with weakness behind his right shoulder, remains a possibility to start one of the games in next Sunday’s double-dip in Philly.

Manuel indicated that Gary Sheffield (back spasms) is “pretty close” to being shut down for the season

Carlos Beltran could be back with the Mets Tuesday. The club wants him to play back-to-back nine-inning games Saturday and Sunday with Class-A Brooklyn before putting him in the big league lineup. He has been out since June 21 with a bone bruise under his right knee.

this might actually start looking like a team soon.
The saddest part? If Maine throws OK, and Beltran picks up where he left off, the team this year for the last 3-4 weeks is probably better, overall, than what they were rolling out the last 3-4 weeks of 2008!
taking into account how the rotation has been performing, overall quality of the pen, and how poorly some of the regulars were hitting last year.
