not a pretty game. Really did expose all the warts, many of them mental. And that, my friends, has to be an indictment on Manuel.
I don’t think anyone (including Omar) is going to argue that he is some kind of strategic genius (many of us migh argue he is less of that than many LL coaches), or that he is particularly adept at managing a pen.
So, what is left? Preparing the team to play, and expecting, and enforcing, they play hard and smart (the only way a team short on talent will win).
Since the Met’s neither tend to play smart, or fundementally sound, or even agressive (often) ball, what exactly is jerry bringing to the table other than inane sound bites?
couldn’t he at least pull a player for making a totally bonehead play (laike say, pagan?) Just to make a point?
Peopole talk about trading the “core” to shake things up or change the chemistry. Well, cutting loose this chump and getting someone with a clue to set the tone would be a lot more effective, and plausible.
and yes, I do believe that Gil Hodges had as much to do with getting the ’69 team over the hump as the players did.
Lot’s of players (and teams) have enough talent, but not all of them ever realize it.

I know what else Jerry is bringing… a doghouse for players that haven’t done anything wrong to him. What a bum he is.

Oh, and now that they have gotten some of the core back off the DL, doesn’t it seem they are playing every bit as poorly, if not worse, than before?

This is what I was saying way earlier in the season amidst the “we’ll be fine once the cavalry comes back” nonsense. When we were healthy early on, we were an awful mess fundamentally and mentally. We haven’t looked like a baseball team that knows how to play at all this season. How you go about changing that, I don’t know, but it’s gotta start with the manager and coaching staff (in my opinion).

Question is was last summer after he took over and this May just a fluke?

Probably. May was just really a few guys being hot. I don’t recall that they actually played any better than before that. And a few guys going off for a month can hide a lot of flaws.
Did they really play crisp, clean, smart ball last summer for Jerry? Or was it more riding Delgado for a while?
Or maybe it took a while for the team to fluch Willie and his fundamentals out of their system, and to embraced Jerry’s sloppiness?

Again, who knows? Is it players or managers or just dumb luck?

final early thought before breakfast (well 2, the first being I hope my house doesn’t float away with all this rain):
While it would be incredibly sweet to see the Mets sweep (ok, 3 of 4) thsi weekend and have the marlins catch the phils by the end of the season (selfish maybe, but I live by philly, and have never met a marlin fan!), I shudder to think how ugly this weekend will get.
Mets should actually score some runs, but starting Redding, Maine, pelf(?) and what, figgy?
my lord, the phils could easily totally wipe out the mets pen, and certainly should outscore the Eagles in a couple of the games!
Of course, the Mets will probably go 4-0 and give up 12 runs total, since they are the Mets and rarely do anything that makes logical sense.

Well the good news is they can’t wipe out the pen because of all the call ups. You are right it does not look good on paper but this has been a strange season. The Phillies are 3-6 in their last 9 against the Giants, Astros and Nats.

So I did a lineup analysis of next year’s team using career OBP and SLG.
Here’s what I got:
(5.257 Runs Per Game) Nick Johnson – Wright – Figgins – Beltran – Reyes – Francouer – Santos – Santana – Castillo

Is there a reason why the analysis always put the pitcher batting 8th?
Was it invented by LaRussa?

I don’t know but if there was a manager that would put a .400 OBP guy 9th they should be fired when the lineups are exchanged.

So ur saying Jerry should’ve been fired already?

BTW, Toby Hyde expects Adam Bostick of AAA Buffalo to be the 2nd lefty in the pen next year.
