This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty 09-17-09

Daniel – Do you feel the pain ? I do after staying up and watching the travesty that was the ninth inning last night. I just have one question to ask you – WHY WERE YOU CHANNELING YOUR INNER MIKE JORGENSEN INSTEAD OF YOUR INNER KEITH HERNANDEZ !!!! I MEAN COME ON BOTH HITS WERE NOT FROZEN ROPES !!! Okay with that being said here is something that should make us fellow Mets fans all misty and nostalgic. Today is the twenty third anniversary of the ’86 Mets clinching The N.L Eastern Division crown – damn it seems like only yesterday that we owned this city – but alas we merely had squatters rights. Hell I guess that puts us in great position to draft Bryce Harper come next spring – oh yeah – HE’S A SCOTT BORAS CLIENT AND WE ALMOST NEVER PAY ABOVE SLOT !!! KIRK “F#CKING PRESLEY PART DEUX HERE WE COME !!!
Okay sorry lost my composure – here’s the infamy
Happy Birthday to our Batting & bench coach of the mid ’90′s under both the Dallas Green and Bobby Valentine regimes – Bobby ” Fine” Wine (1938)
Also another year older is our former captain and All Star reliever , Brooklyn’s own – John Franco (1960) Yeah we all cringed whenever he pitched in crucial moments late in his career and yes he became a clubhouse lawyer before we ran him off on a rail – but I still have great fondness for the man
Sadly on this date in 2005 , Mets legend , Donn Clendenon passed away. (2005) Donn was they missing link of that ’69 Championship team. When they obtained him from Montreal they not only received a power bat, they received a no nonsense player who led by example – you are missed !

On this date in ’76 New York Mets sold Ken ” Col. ” Sanders to the Kansas City Royals

Also on this date in ’76 New York Mets signed free agent Greg Harris . Harris saw limited time as a reliever from ’81 – ’82 before being traded to the Reds for George Foster. He ended up having a decent 13 year M.L.B career.

New York Mets traded Frank Tanana to the New York Yankees for Kenny Greer on September 17, 1993. Tanana was brought in as a number 3 starter behind Doc Gooden & Brett Saberhaen, but he pitched more like a number 12 starter, It is one of the very few trades completed between the Mets and the Yanks.
And lastly guys remember , there are only two weeks left in this debacle of a season so lets just hope ( pray, plead cry whine, stomp our feet etc) that the Front office makes the right moves this off season – But after seeing their track record since November of ’06 all I can say is -DON’T HOLD YOUR BREATH !

I hear you, Rusty. Another embarrassing loss in an awful season. Look at the bright side, at least we can’t possibly lose 100 games this year… 99 is the max. :-/ I honestly can’t wait for playoff baseball. I love watching players that actually understand how to play the game…
