Seems like there is much talk amongst Mets fans on what the Mets should do for the 2010 season and it seems depending on who you ask the course either revolves around rebuilding or reloading for 2010 and beyond. Some feel we need to wait for the likes of Ike Davis and Brad Holt and see if they can help and not go crazy on free agency and sign someone that can help in 2010 but not block the development of our Baby Mets.
Others feel we should go out and get a Lackey or Bay for a shot at 2010.
What do you think the Mets plan will be? Do you think they will try to rebuild the team or do you think they will make an attempt to reload and win it all for 2010?
Just let your voices be heard by answering the poll below.

I should make this an opinion piece, since it will probably end up being long enough!
Anyway, NJ, I don’t quite understand your choices. To me, they are both reloading, since you are keeping the nucleus of talent, and building around it. That, and even if you sign lackey and bay, you are still keeping all of the young guys that will allow you to rebuild.
I also think you have to clearly define rebuilding, since that implies you are tearing something down first. And in baseball, that means trading away you higher paid veterans for prospects (rebuilding the farm) and also using young guys/rookies onthe field to replace them (rebuilding the roster).
Well, most of the Mets nucleus is actually young, and relatively affordable (with beltran not really either, and Santana not cheap). So, these are guys that you would really try to bring IN, not trade away. And if they aren’t going to unload them, then no rebuilding.
Maybe there should be 3 options (in the context of your house).
1) redecorate
2) remodel
3) rebuild.
Redecorate menas paint and new carpet, just to freshen things up. That would be like tweaking the bench and BP, and maybe getting 1 new SP or a LF from the mid range pool. basically waiting for the team to get healthy and trying again. and hoping that the roolies will be up to help in time.
Remodel means gutting the kitchen, putting in a new bath, and some other genral construction, while keeping the bulk of the house intact, but still spending serious money. This could be seen as signing holliday and lackey, and bringing in say Delgado on a heavy incentive contract.
Rebuild means you take the house down to the studs or foundation, fix all the flaws, and build up soemthing new in the same place. This of course is analagous to trading every veteran or older guy you can get some prospects back for, loading up the minors, and putting the best team of young guys you can on the field, and taking your lumps while they learn on the job. And of course, have a lower payroll.
So, using your options, I think you are really deciding between redecorate and remodel.

LoL good points all of them I guess what I meant to say by rebuilding is simply that are they not going to do anything that will block the growth of their (cough) Minor league talent but rather try to win with what they have and hope the Baby Mets can blossom to fill the void for either late 2010 or beyond. I mean if you sign a Bay or a Lackey or trade for a Halladay or a Adrian Gonzalez. you are reloading for 2010 for sure imo.

but none of those moves block anybody. You always need more pitching every year, and if they do get a 1B you still have 2 corner OF spots far from locked up.
and if you really end up witha stud at AAA but no poisition, it sets up a nice strength from strength trade opportunity (like the garza deal)

I don’t know stick I think you are looking to deeply at the word rebuild. Again rebuilding when I used it was merely to suggest are the Mets gonna fill their holes from within meaning waiting on the farm to develop or sign free agents now.

I would view that as standing pat. To me rebuilding means blowing the team up and having no hope of competing.

One of the posters over at MChammers world had a nice response ont he thread about the MLBTR plan for 2010 (mark4212). Much better than the comments on MLBTR. THere are some really stupid people that post over there.
“” I’d be willing to let Anderson Hernandez hold down the fort as the Backup. There is also an additional spot i think which could be filled by that 27 year old guy they will acquire from Boston in the Wagner deal Chris Carter. I’d be happy with a team of:
Reyes, Beltran, Wright, Holliday, Murphy, Castillo, Thole, Santos, Evans, Pagan, Hernandez, Carter.
The rotation of Johan, Lackey, Perez, Pelfrey. (Maine, Nieve, Figgy, Neise)
Bullpen of: K-Rod, Putz, Parnell, Feliciano, Stokes, Bostick, fill in the rest.
There should also be a decent group in AAA by the end of the year. Starting should be Ike Davis, F-Mart, and Ruben Tejada, coming in probably mid-season are Brad Holt, and Jerry Mejia who could make a late season impact in the Bullpen like Joba or Billingsley did when they were called up as they are the mets top 2 pitching prospects.
Again the team isn’t in Dire straights like most sports writers would leave you to believe.”"
