This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty 09-23-09

After last nights game that’s only 2 highlights were Carlos Beltrans’ catches and Nelson “Figgy” Figueroa pitching a decent game all I have to say is ” wake me up when ts over!”
Okay on with the infamy
Happy Birthday to Bobby Valentines favorite whipping boy from ’98 pitcher Pete Harnisch (1966)
New York Mets purchased Bob ” Righty” Miller from the Detroit Tigers on September 23, 1973.
Well The Yankees clinched last night so it’s time for me to take abuse from all the front runner fans I work for.

And did you see the Yankees last night? There were a couple of handshakes, some black slapping and that was it. They feel so entitled, take it so for granted, it doesn’t even mean anything to them anymore.

I can still remember the 2006 Met celebration on the field that night they clinched….

That’s just called professionalism. Besides, they’ve been to the postseason most years this decade, so they really have no reason to celebrate that much. They need to worry about not getting bounced in the first round again.

Also, you celebrate on the field like school kids when your organization’s history is deeply rooted in failure, disappointment, and misery… like ours.

I think too, we had more players on the ’06 team who never went to post season and/or won a WS. So to them, it was all new.

I don’t know about the professionalism angle though. I still think it’s an entitlement mindset. Jeter was quoted last year, when asked about not getting to the post seasosn, as saying something like ‘This isn’t supposed to be. I’m not suppose to be packing up in Oct. and going home. I’m suppose to be getting ready for the post season’…….

I’m old enough to remember the years in a row of some pretty awful Yankee teams. Jeter should consider himself lucky….

        1. darknova306

Well, after he’d been in the postseason just about his entire career, I can understand Jeter’s disappointment last year.

If I was Jeter I would feel that way too. I don’t see any thing wrong with that.

“your organization’s history is deeply rooted in failure, disappointment, and misery… like ours.”

This is way too strong and totally overstates things.

Why be a Met fan if this is how you feel??

        1. trs86

Yeah, gotta wonder how Cubs fans feel. Maybe even Redsox fans before the last run. I wonder if they are still a team deeply….

        2. darknova306

Yes, too strong and overstated, but you don’t understand just how bitter and jaded this team has made me over the years.

“Why be a Met fan if this is how you feel??”
          Because I love them regardless.

          1. trs86

Of course it has but you choose to be a Mets fan. I for one don’t want to be like the Yankee’s. I want things to be fresh and exciting. It hurts but that is what being a Mets fan is. Getting your hopes up and sometimes come crashing down. I have had even parts of this season that have been fun, few and small…

          2. darknova306

Well, 2007 had pretty much made it impossible to get my hopes anywhere above zero. If they eventually prove they can win when it matters, maybe that’ll change. Until then, I’ll always expect a September fade if we’re contending.

          3. trs86

So if you feel that way then why should the players not feel that way.
You are asking them to do something you can’t even do.

          4. darknova306

Obviously the players CAN’T do it, as they showed in September ’08.

If the players can’t expect to win when it matters or at least feel like it’s possible, they shouldn’t be playing. I’m just a fan, so my confidence in them really means nothing in the long run.

Gotcha Dark; I definitely agree on your feeling here.

I guess being 43, and having my formative Met years be the 7-year disaster of 1977–1983 when there was less than zero hope, have given me the ability to appreciate the good–however infrequent it is!

          6. trs86

Agreed, as I was 10 in 86 and developed my Mets love in Braves territory I had a hard teen age life. “You are a Mets fan? Why, they suck”

          7. Kingman 26

            LOL! I can relate!

I was 11 and 12 in 77 and 78 when the Mets were horrid and the Yanks were winning titles…I rooted for the Royals in the ALCS every year, so 1980 was pretty sweet…that Brett homer off of Gossage in the 1980 ALCS was one of my favorite non-Met sports moments.

          8. trs86

Well watching the Braves choke every year did help a little but still I had to hide my Mets gear a lot. LOL.

          9. darknova306

My formative Met years were 1990-1996 if you want to use a 7-year span to define that. That was a lot of horrific baseball.

          10. Kingman 26

Sure was…I lived in Seattle then, so I did have a bit of enjoyment watching the Mariners beat the Yanks in 1995—absolutely amazing moment in Seattle when they won Game 5.

      3. trs86

Man you guys are polar opposites here. Both of you should take time and read John Wooden’s view on achievements. While you should go out of your way to not show up the other team and understand there is an end you should also enjoy each step of the journey. As he would say, “The journey is greater than the inn,”

        1. Kingman 26

I agree with a lot of what I have read/heard from Wooden. What he did with UCLA is still completely unbelievable and beyond ridiculous. Especially when one looks at the fact that no other team has come remotely close to his record, in any sport.

And TRS, as for the last sentence, I do travel a fair amount, and I very much am a “Getting there is half the fun” kind of guy…so I am on the right track!

        2. prismo

Or in this case, “The journey is greater than the win.”

          1. trs86

As an AAU basketball coach I have really seen this. I have boxes full of trophies and even a few national championships. However, none of them are displayed but the pictures of the teams are.

When it comes to the Yanks, all I can say is GO DETROIT!

Let’s see a blissful repeat of the 2006 ALDS.

    1. darknova306

Honestly, the Yanks aren’t look all the good coming down the stretch. If CC has his usual October implosion, they could seriously be boned. Not to mention AJ isn’t looking so hot and Pettite’s shoulder is always a question. Go Tigers!! :)

      1. Kingman 26

My friend, may you be correct on this!

A Yankee first round loss would be SOOOO sweet after this year of misery.

      2. metsfan4decades

I’m rooting for the Angels over there, but I agree. Their pitching is suspect right now. And Joba…..whatever they’re doing with him on limiting games/innings has just messed him up. Either that, or he really isn’t starter material to begin with…
