Once again it’s time to get your daily dose of TRDMB’s Mets in the Papers.
Anthony DiComo, “Wright Grinding Through To Season’s End”
“You take a lot of pride in your at-bats,” Wright said. “You take a lot of pride in the pitches that you take. The games that are left, we’re going to go out there and play to win the game. Nobody’s packing it in. There’s too much fight and there’s too much competitiveness in this room to do that. We’re going to go out there and finish as strong as we can.”
Bart Hubbuch, “David Won’t Pack It In, But He’s Set For Mets To Be Done”
“There’s not many positives we can take away from this year as a whole,” he said. “It’s not a learning process dealing with failure. I’m ready after that last out to turn the page and get ready for next year, because this hasn’t been fun for anybody. In fact, it’s been very disappointing.”
David Lennon, “No Fun For Mets As They Play Out The String”
“It’s tough,” Pelfrey said. “It’s like going to work every day and having a bad day. It’s not fun.”
Adam Rubin, “Mounting Defeats Have Mets Feeling Lost In Disappointing Season”
“It’s no fun that it’s come to you’re trying to play for moral victories,” said David Wright who tonight is expected to break Howard Johnson‘s franchise record of 835 games played at third base. “We put ourselves in this position. So we have to finish as strong as we can, hopefully on a positive note, and then get some momentum going into next spring training and have some guys feeling good about individual performances heading into the winter.”
Adam Rubin, “F-mart Robben In Dominican Republic”
His wallet reportedly was stolen “with US$2,000, four credit cards from American banks and some important documents like his Dominican ID. It was stolen while he was in a party with some relatives in an amusement center near his native town, Rio San Juan, in the north of the Dominican Republic. The name of the place where the incident took place is Drink Together, on the road Rio San Juan-Cabrera. He called to the program La Opcion de la Manana 93.3 FM (The Option of the Morning) to confirm the fact and he promised a reward to whomever gets him the documents.”
Let’s Go Mets !

One of these isn’t like the other. Slow news day.
Couldn’t they make shit up like MC does?

MC actually has a decent idea for fans to wear blue at Citi. I like the idea behind fans wearing team colors like so many sports teams do.
Problem is, wtf do I do w/ my pinstripe jerseys? Mets don’t have a blue jersey, do they?
As a matter of fact, I don’t have any blue Mets gear, except for my caps. I have black t-shirts and a pinstripe jersey.
Oh well, I guess I’ll have to only wear them at home.

Thought that was a cool idea myself, but had the same thoughts you did.
I have just one blue Met shirt. The rest are black, and of course my pinstrip jerseys. I’ve got both the blue and black warm up jackets though.
If this idea caught on, the Met stores could market cool blue tee’s, etc. and probably sell many. Hey, maybe enough we can get a real #2 SP – LOL.

As a UVA football fan I adamantly disagree. It’s ineffective and lessens the experience. Everyone looks the same and going to the game and doing a little people watching gets really boring. And with how bad UVA football sucks under Groh there is little to do besides people watch. It basically means nothing to the team or the players.

Serves him right for carrying around $2k in his wallet in the D.R. That’s probably enough money for him to live for 3 months. (I guess he could have been planning to be the big shot and pay the family’s bill)

ha, so rich people shouldn’t carry lots of money around.
Tell that to the guys at Marquis spending $1K on crystal bottles.

So Bradley and Zamby have been discussed. How much money would you want to comeback for Perez for Soriano? Soriano is still due 5/90, Perez 2/24. If you threw in Castillo it would be another 12M. Of course at that point you would have to net either a LOT of cash from the Cubs or a top prospect. Ramble?

I’d rather take the chance on Ollie. He’s a headache, but he’s our headache. IOW, better the devil you know.

I tend to agree. The thing is, with Perez only owed 24M at 12 a year we are just as well off to see what we can get and if he forces the issue by pitching worse than a #5 and won’t go down to AAA deal with it then. Believe it or not our only 2 bad contracts are not really long term.

Soriano I think is too far to go. Incredibly bad combination of bad contract, bad player and now hurt. And for 5 more years? Unlwss the Cubs were going to pay 10 mill a year + take Ollie and Castillo, it makes no sense.
besides, you want him back at 2B or in LF?
Ollie is a bad contract, but only because of his incredibly poor year. But, anyone with only 2 years left is not that bad, and if he comes close to being what he was a few times, even a solid #5 often #4 type, not too much overpaid. And 2 years on castillo is actually manageable, and he doesn’t get paid that much.
Really, the 2 “ad” contracts (as in scary, or potentially hamstringing) are Santana and K Rod. Johan because of the years/$$s to a pitcher (never know when an arm will go), and K Rod because paying 8 figures to a closer is not really smart, plus if his 4th year vests and he underperforms, you could be paying him what, 17mill? That puts a crimp in the old budget.
I think Ollie has no trade value, so you keep him and hope for a rebound. Castillo has value now, so if the Cubs will pony up some real players (prospects) I take it and the savings and run.

Something else I noticed looking at salary.
The Mets have 6 players locked into next year making 10M
Dodgers 2
Phillies 4
Red Sox 4
Angels 2
Cards 2
Tigers 5
Yankees 7
Cubs 8
Now take a look at 5M or more.
Yankees 9
Angels 6
Dodgers 5
Red sox 7
Tigers 7
Phillies 9
Cards 3
Cubs 8
What does this random info tell me?

that the Mets spend alot on player’s salary. But we already knew they had the highest salary in the NL.
Like I said in the other thread. It makes it that much more important to have ML ready talent capable of filling in.
Otherwise, you end up spending on guys who aren’t worth it.

I think it tells you what we kind of know without data.
The Mets are somewhat top heavy, which is why they have such a high payroll, and also little flexibility to move people.
Combine this with the perception that they spend too much on the stiffs, and boom. a high payroll.
I assume the 5 and 10 groups are cumulative (meaning the mets have 7 5mill+, not 13!)
really does point out that they have an expensive core, and a bunch of supporting pieces.
a few less huge contracts and more mid tier guys might be a better way to go!

I think that is the model the Phillies have used. They have the core of Howard, Utley and Rollins for offense but have it supported with 1 10+ guy in Ibanez, 3 5M guys in Vicki, Werth and Feliz.

In 2010:
Mets have 2 10+ in Beltran and Wright, and 2 5+ in Castillo and Reyes. Below 5M are Santos, Murph and French. ? in LF and maybe Murph gets replaced.
Phillies have 3 10+ in Howard, Utley and Ibanez, and 3 5+ in Rollins, Feliz, Werth. Below 5M are Ruiz and Vicky.
Offense seems comparable.

As for Pitching:
Mets have:
10+: Santana, Perez, K-Rod,
5+:
<5: Maine, Pelfrey and Feliciano (Arb. bt. 2 and 3)
Phils have:
10+: 1 Lidge
5+: 4 in Moyer, Lee, Blanton, Hamels
<5: 2 in Romero(4), Madson(4.5)
Mets have good balance on top and bottom. Going after another 10+ SP may not be the best monetary decision. Better to balance it out with a 5-10 SP.

Getting a little worried about Wright for next year. His approach was way out of whack already, and the Ks are a big issue. Esepcially if he cut down his swing to be more contact/line drive, and less swinging for the fences, you would think he would have fewer Ks, not more!
Combine that with the admittance (and why are these guys stupid enough to say this to a reporter?) that he has the yips, and who knows what to expect next year.
But, no matter what the FO does in the off season, if DW is a no power K machine that bails out on every inside pitch, next year could be very, very ugly. And it would be terrible if the beaning means we have seen the best of DW before this year.

It will just take some time. Could be just another Wright cold spell. However, if he is going to keep his OBP up and still gets backup to the .900′s in OPS we should be fine.

And if he remains timid of the inside pitches…? What then?
