This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty 09-26-09

Hello my friends and fellow Mets fans ( those who still admit to being one !) I actually forced myself to watch last nights entire game ( punishment for a prior offense) and I came away with the following observations.
1. Kevin Burkhardt in my opinion is best left to the mid game up dates and puff pieces because during the pregame analysis he was providing all I was thinking was ” Where the f%ck was Keith Gary and Ron !
2. David Wright looks totally lost – I agree that was a foul ball and he argued with the clueless ump very briefly , I don’t know if the pressure has finally got to him or if he is scared of being crowded at the plate.
3. Jeff Francour is a keeper
4. Sean Green will rank up there along with the Doug Sisks and Mel Rojases the mediocre Mets of the bullpen.
Anyway on with the infamy !
Happy birthday to ( speak of the devil and he appears) set up man from the mid ’80′s teams Doug ” Hair Breath Harry ” Sisk (1957) . Does anyone else remember in 1995 during the owners lockout when he came out of retirement and tarnished his reputation even more by becoming a scab replacement player – he didn’t last long being bombed in their ” spring training games” . To quote Joe Benigno ” OH THE PAIN !!”
Also on this date the New York Mets purchased pitcher “Doc ” Medich from the Seattle Mariners on September 26, 1977.
And finally Lets Sweep The Marlins !! to at least exact our revenge on what they did to us on the last series of the season for the past two years !! ( and hopefully Jerry & Omar will be sent packing soon afterwards !)

Which is it Rusty? Do you want the Mets to show life ann sweep the Fish to officially knock them out of the race, or continue to lose to force the Wilpons hands to fire those guys? I’m figuring that a sweep by Washington next week should be enough to tip the balance.

I posted late last night about DW. Just worried a little that this funk carries over. The odd power outage and alarming # of Ks is scary, and now that he has the yips (as he admitted), what if it all carries over to next year? Could be ugly, especially if he starts slow and completely starts to press.

Rusty, hopefully it is just “gallow’s humor”, but aren’t you getting a tad silly with the snide comments (punishment, sadistic, etc.?)

I was planning to right a seriouly long ramble of an opinion piece on this at some point (maybe I should send it to Greg over at F&F..), but in the posts and comments on the various blogs, there seems to be a recurring theme.

If you still watch the Mets, carea bout the Mets, admit to being a fan, go to a game (or are even thinking about going to a game next year, or God forbid renewing seasons tickets) you are some kind of loser/idiot/moron/koolaid drinker/Wilpon enabler. And of course, this is usually spewed by someone that claims to be a “huge fan”.

Well sorry, but yes I am a Mets fan, always have been and always will be, and yes I am perfectly willing to admit it. And I live in Philly country!

Also, many people just really enjoy watching baseball, especially when it is “their team”, and have been devolted through much worse stretches (shout out to MF4D!)

Am I disapponted in how this season went? Yup. Do I still come here and to othe sites and get your traffic up? Yup. Will I watch, root and hope fo rbig things next year? Yup.

I will even attend a few games, finances willing. Heck, I even got together a few friends last week and got tickets for the last game of the season. Keeping our string alive, and heck, after being their the last 2 seasons, this year should be much more relaxing.

Maybe many of the more obnoxious mouths were bandwagon fans from 2006 getting off? That will be fine. And I do recognize attendance is correlated to winning. But it just seems over the top when “fans” are going Godfather on the team after a bizarre, injury filled year like this one.

ANd I also remember the last 3 years. And sorry, but all three were exciting, and have to be considered successful when you are playing for the post season on the last day.

I also get a laugh out of the poele that have decided that even if all the DL crew comes back healthy next year (a reasonable expectation, at least to start), and they get a few quality pieces (even lackey and Holliday or some such), that the team will continue to stink and has “no chance” of being competitive.

Does the fact taht they were in 1st place at the end of May count as competetive, until they started playing the Bison’s bench on a regular basis? And I fully well believe Omar should go, but even if he is still around, the holes should be filled well enough to have them in the hunt again in 2010.

One thing I will agree on is the overwhelming concensus opinion that Jerry is a lousy manager and should not be back, and he can take all the coaches with him.

    OK, that’s enough for now.

stick yeah it’s gallows humor- i have avery dry wit – that sometimes gets me into trouble lol – i will always support my team – im a mets fan – but with that being said i wouldnt shed a tear if both jerry and omar get the boot – trust me im not a band wagon fan – ive been to plent of games from 75 – 83 and 91 – 97 also 01,02 – ’04 so i know how it feels to be one of 9000 frans at the stadium while they play the jeffersons theme inviting you to upgrade yer seat. this seasons just been very frustrating and i feel like the front office has misled us on many things – whether it was – yeah we have enough money at the trade deadline to get needed players to the – we arent making moves because our injured player will be back by mid august – to well its iffy they will be back this year. – damn i hope 2010 will be much better

    2. Mr North Jersey

Hey Stick, I agree with much that you said. I think their is a segment of bandwagon fans and there are those fans that all they can do is see the flaw in the team and tear away at it all the way down to the bone. This exists now and will exist always in all sports.

Success is a matter of opinion usually based on the haves and have nots. I haven’t been in the post season therefore I want to be in it and if I am not it’s an unsuccessful season. Then there are those that have been in the post season but want a W.S. Ring and if they don’t get it it’s an unsuccessful season. While there are those that want meaningful games in September and if they don’t get it it’s an unsuccessful season.

I will tell you that for me historically before the Minaya era when the term “meaningful games in September” was ever uttered what I would watch once we were eliminated was the kids that were brought up (our future) and my fav starter/starters and my favorite player/players as they try to reach a particular milestone.

Sadly this 2009 season I am at a rare situation where to be honest most of the reasons I mentioned above are not to engaging for me.

      Kids called up:
Thole is nice to watch when he starts but Stoner is nothing to get excited about.

      Fav Pitcher:
Santana is gone and while Maine & Pelf are favs Maine is in the midst of rehab trying to get back to where he was before he got hurt and I find myself not being to watch Pelfrey for more that 3 innings. He has been my biggest disappointment I have to say.

      Fav Player:
Because of all the injuries most of the guys I enjoyed watching have not been available to me.
Wright is a trooper that I think physically checked out a few weeks ago it’s just his mind is in denial so he continues to march out there.
Beltran scares me too much to watch I cannot for the life of me understand how he is allowed to continue to take the field every time he goes for an extra base all I think is please don’t pull up lame or please don’t run into anything (wall/other player).
Murphy aka “Mr September” has finished the season well but until he shows me that he can do it over the course of a entire season I will view him as a possible above average offensive 2nd baseman with a poor glove or a poor offensive 1st baseman with a average glove. In either event I am not too excited
Castillo well I compliment him on a solid year but again that dropped ball is still in my thoughts and I will be honest he will need to do a lot more than what he has done since then before I can look at him with different colored glasses. He needs an Endy moment or an Aaron “freakin” Boone type moment which is not fair to him I admit but their is just too much water under the bridge for me.

In the end I still read the article and watch the games but not the entire game anymore to me the season starts the day after the World Series ends and I am all juiced up to see what if anything is done to prevent 2009 from ever happening again.

Wow I never expected this much of a reply when I initially sat down to type this. Sorry for the long comment.
      :-)

Nice win last night. Sullivan and reed have done a nice job with the cards they were dealt. Hope frenchy will be everyday rf for next few years.
Let’s go mets! Go big blue!

I agree with the sentiment Stick made concerning some ‘so called’ fans. I’ve read on many other blogs, those that go on and on complaining about being tired of any and all excuses and they just want to win. — No matter the cost, no matter the common sense. ‘Spend whatever it takes’, is a common theme. I don’t agree with that. What are we, the Yankees???

I think salaries are ridiculous, the way it is. I have no problem with the Wilpons staying under the luxury tax. Get creative with FA acquisitions, trades and home grown talent and you can have a competitive team. You don’t need to constantly overspend.

I love baseball. To me, it’s not summer unless it’s NY Met baseball. I’ve watched all but 2 games this year and all complete games at that – long after they were out of it. How else am I going to know where the holes are, who needs improvement, who should go, etc.? And you never know what you’ll miss.

On that note, Wright looked awful last night. I hope he does figure out what changed this year and make the necessary adjustments for next year. And he looks exhausted. The season probably can’t end soon enough for him.

I’ll be watching the post season – all the way through. My fondest hope is the Yanks and Phils get eliminated in the first round and I’m watching something like Dodgers and Angels in the WS…

    1. Mr North Jersey

The concept of “winning no matter what the cost” is something more like wishful thinking.
As a fan I do not concern myself (and I know you are already aware of this 4D I am just saying it for those that don’t know my view) with salary I’ve said before my only concern is winning and if we win because we have a 10 million dollar budget for salaries or we spend 200 million to sign a Pujols to a 7 year contract per say that would not bother me in the least so long as it doesn’t prohibit us from making other moves.
And there is where the wishful thinking comes in because deep down we know that it must affect other moves (how can it not) so odds are it will never happen but if we could do it I would be for it anyways.
I know I am in the minority and do not expect anyone to understand or even agree with my view but for me it’s simple Mantra “Win By Any Means Necessary” (other than cheating of course).

If we win with a bunch of 20 year old Baby Mets or with a bunch of has-beens or with the lowest or highest payroll as long as we win that is my only goal.

      1. metsfan4decades

Ooooh, Pujols……how great would it be to see him patrolling first in a Met uniform? I know, not happening….

I still say salaries are out of control. 100 million estimate to a Strasburg(?) draftee before he’s even thrown a pitch? And may never reach the big leagues? Millions for Chapman with his 102 MPH fastball – same mindset?
        It’s just crazy….

  5. Kingman 26

Just gotta stop by and chime in that I love this team, have watched since 1973 and am not giving up any time soon.

I am like MF4D–she started a few years before me, but I started watching regularly in the late 70s, so we know that while 2007 and 2008 were major disappointments, things can be a LOT worse.

Yes, there is more to baseball than just winning a WS, and the only thing that really turns me off is lack of effort.

I do think, most forcefully, that all we need is a couple of wise signings (Lackey would be nice, and a LF would be OK too), and, even more importantly, a manager other than Jerry. Jerry is too laid-back, too old-fashioned, clearly does not have the team’s respect, and has not been a good enough player or manager to demand respect.

I am convinced we need a taskmaster/strategist with experience, i.e. Bobby V or Buch Showalter. Happy to listen to other suggestions, but this one change would dramatically shift the attitude from day one in the spring.

For those ignoring/not watching, the Mets have 9 days left, and then it is the lesser sports until spring. And yes, I love football (Dolphins) and basketball (Nets—or, as someone pointed out, now with their new ownership and bleak situation, the NYETS.)

Let’s go Mets, let’s see Slappy and Frenchy and KRod lead us to a strong finish, and let’s see Jerry get the damn boot ASAP.

    1. Mr North Jersey

You have to admit barring injuries if we just can
get people on the field and healthy. Names like,
      Santana
      KRod
      Wright
      Reyes
      Beltran

Adding one more pitcher for that 1-2 punch and one more bat to deepen the lineup
we should have at least a shot at the post-season if we can get the right combination of players around them.

      1. Kingman 26

        I agree completely.

But we need a new manager.

No one respect Jerry, he is completely incapable of developing young players, his strategy is generally questionable, he is a dark cloud linking us to the last two years, and–perhaps more than any Met manager I can remember–he truly brings absolutely nothing to the table.

Willie was not the greatest, but at least he was in a lot of winning dugouts and locker rooms.

        1. Mr North Jersey

But maybe Jerry is the next Joe Torre.

          1. Kingman 26

Interesting point…Jerry won a division in Chicago, as did Torre in Atlanta, and Jerry’s overall record in Chi was similar to Torre’s in St. L….but Torre was a near-great player, which Jerry was not.

Not taking anything away from Torre, but if Showalter stays in 1996 and beyond, do the Yanks not win any titles??

            I VERY seriously doubt it.

            Still, really interesting point.
