This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty 09-27-09

Good evening my fellow Mets fans. So there is less than a week to go in this wretched stinking carcass that is the 2009 Mets season and all I can say is WHAT TOOK SO LONG !!!!! From the dropped fly balls by Murph ( sans the Murph Tones) To “Slappy” Castillio forgetting how to use two hands when catching a pop up, to Ryan Church forgetting that you have to touch third base in order to score a run ( let’s not even get into the so many injuries that the Aflac Duck has whiplash)this season has turned out to be a lesson in futility- but you know what? WE ARE METS FANS !!!! WE HOPE FOR THE BEST AND EXPECT THE WORST !! ( it is our lot in life sadly)
Okay and now on with the infamy !!!
First off happy birthday to Junior Ortiz’s understudy – catcher Ronn Reynolds (1958)
Also celebrating a birthday today is mediocre journeyman middle relief pitcher Mike DeJean (1970)

Okay so we are 67 – 89 going into tonite we need only two more wins to get to 69 ( and honor the “69 World Series team for its fortieth anniversary) But I say lets go for broke and win seventy three games !!! – but alas Jerry is our manager and we will probably win only one more game the rest of the season ( kidding stickguy ) anyway LETS GO METS !!!

sadly, rooting for them to get stuck on 67 wins to force the issue is starting to seem like a viable plan!

And I am ashamed of myself fo reven thinking it!

Maybe if all the players (at least the few that count or will still be here, go to management with the request to ditch him, or maybe some well placed annonymous leaks, will generate enough bad publicity to get teh Wilpons to react?

Nah, they probably like playing for a dim bulb that expects nothing and never enforces cnsequences!

Thank you for reminding us all about the Junior Ortiz/Ronn Reynolds years of Met baseball. Yes 2009 sucked hard, and yes 2006-2008 ended unhappily, but longtime Met fans know well it can be so much worse. Even this season the team didn’t become irrelevant until July. 1974-1983 was pretty much an entire decade of irrelevance, and it was a long time from the last gasps of the ’86 roster until 1999 as well. I don’t think we’ve entered an era comparable to either of those (yet?).

hopefuly not my friend – hopefully not

I noticed a number of people on the last thread echoing the theme of not trusting the team, no faith, don’t believe anything will improve, and even that 2010 is a lost cause already.

But, at least admit that come ST, you will start feeling like “well, if this or that happens, we just might..” And “the new guy looks like the missing piece to put us over the top..”

Basically, the car will pull into the station, and you will get back on the roller coaster for another ride, just like every other year!

stick can you blame most fans after all the lies and subterfuge the fromt office and ownership has handed us since spring training – im a optimist but even I can see that they arent exactly open and truthful with us fans

      1. stickguy

well, to be fair, they aren’t supposed to be open and honest, if it gives an edge to the competition. All teams blow smoke, mislead, plant false rumors, etc.

And if you are specificially referring to the extended injury periods, I actually believe they were being honest, in that the initial estimates were what the Drs. were predicting at the time. Obviously it didn’t play out that way…

But no, I do not think they knew “the calvery” was all done for the year except for CB and purposely lied about it to keep ticket sales up. Most tixs were probably sold by then anyway (except for the ones that are right before the game).

incompetence does not always imply duplicity.

          Jose, Delgado, JJ, Ollie.

Four key players, all of who were going to return long ago.

All of whom have missed two-thirds of the year at least.

Ever heard of this happening with four key players in one year, for any team, in any sport?

To me, at this point, it is totally irrelevant whether it is incompetence, duplicity, or a combo of both.

Regardless, it points to another area where this franchise is in disarray and in need of serious change.

Who ever heard of FOUR big players who were all supposed to return in August and all miss the entire rest of the year??

          1. stickguy

disarray yeah, but the point was, there is a difference between being open/honest (or really the flip side, a lying sack of crap), and just being cluelessor incompetant.

Maybe 4 was bad luck? JJ got fixed, then had a different injury that took him out. Same with Delgado. If rehab had gone according to plan, they both would have been back by the end of august.

Ollie, he did come back!then got hurt again of course. Or still, but he did come back. And I don’t think they ever said he would be back after he went out the last time.

Jose makes no sense. That one I give you.

the real problem might have been failure to proactively try to rest guys before they make themself worse, and that is an organizational cultural failure.

I think it goes without saying that we will all be their Opening Day 2010 hoping that this will be the year. not trusting the team, no faith, not believing anything will improve, and even that 2010 is a lost cause already is always going to be said by a number of Mets fans that will then deep down be watching the team to hope they prove them wrong.

    3. Kingman 26

Stick, I am already looking forward to 2010….I am just very disappointed in the way the team has played the last two months.

Not just the losses, but the ceaseless, consistent sloppiness.

        +5

        1. rustyjr

wheres points guy when you need him ?!?

    4. darknova306

I’ll be with the team from ST on, as I always am, but my lack of faith will continue until they prove they’re no longer chokers. I expected an 82 win team this year, and got one of the more miserable baseball experiences of my life (though 93 was emotionally scarring, too).

Getting your hopes up for this team is an exercise in self-deception and self-loathing. I say that somewhat jokingly…

      1. darknova306

That was mostly just me venting. This team infuriates so much these days. :(

      2. stickguy

It’s actually being a fan, but oh well.

and the problem with the expect the worst attidude because you know it’s coming is, you miss all the fun even if they do have a season where they go all the way.

whistle a monty python tune here…

        1. rustyjr

spam song? – ok always look on the bright side of life lol

          1. stickguy

            that would be the one.

          2. Kingman 26

“Every Game is Sacred” sung to the tune of “Every Sperm is Sacred”???

          3. GravediggerHebner

So Kong you’re saying God would love the Mets more if they treated baseball like Catholics treat sperm?

            DAD:
There are Jews in the world.
            There are Buddhists.
There are Hindus and Mormons, and then
There are those that follow Mohammed, but
I’ve never been one of them.

            I’m a Roman Catholic,
And have been since before I was born,
And the one thing they say about Catholics is:
They’ll take you as soon as you’re warm.

            You don’t have to be a six-footer.
You don’t have to have a great brain.
You don’t have to have any clothes on. You’re
A Catholic the moment Dad came,

            Because

            Every sperm is sacred.
            Every sperm is great.
            If a sperm is wasted,
            God gets quite irate.

            CHILDREN:
            Every sperm is sacred.
            Every sperm is great.
            If a sperm is wasted,
            God gets quite irate.

            GIRL:
            Let the heathen spill theirs
            On the dusty ground.
God shall make them pay for
Each sperm that can’t be found.

            CHILDREN:
            Every sperm is wanted.
            Every sperm is good.
            Every sperm is needed
            In your neighbourhood.

            MUM:
            Hindu, Taoist, Mormon,
            Spill theirs just anywhere,
But God loves those who treat their
            Semen with more care.

            MEN:
            Every sperm is sacred.
            Every sperm is great.
            WOMEN:
            If a sperm is wasted,…
            CHILDREN:
            …God get quite irate.

            PRIEST:
            Every sperm is sacred.
            BRIDE and GROOM:
            Every sperm is good.
            NANNIES:
            Every sperm is needed…
            CARDINALS:
            …In your neighbourhood!

            CHILDREN:
            Every sperm is useful.
            Every sperm is fine.
            FUNERAL CORTEGE:
            God needs everybody’s.
            MOURNER #1:
            Mine!
            MOURNER #2:
            And mine!
            CORPSE:
            And mine!

            NUN:
            Let the Pagan spill theirs
            O’er mountain, hill, and plain.
            HOLY STATUES:
God shall strike them down for
Each sperm that’s spilt in vain.

            EVERYONE:
            Every sperm is sacred.
            Every sperm is good.
            Every sperm is needed
            In your neighbourhood.

            Every sperm is sacred.
            Every sperm is great.
            If a sperm is wasted,
            God gets quite iraaaaaate!

          4. Kingman 26

            LOL!! Thanks for this!

            Every game is sacred.
            Every game is great.
            If a game is wasted,
            God gets quite irate.

Let the heathen poorly run their bases
            on the dusty ground.
God shall make them pay for
each win that can’t be found.

            Every win is wanted.
            Every win is good.
            Every win is needed
            In your Eastern Division neighbourhood.

Well, they’re still chokers until they show otherwise when it matters. Prove me wrong in 2010, Mets, and I’ll shut my damn mouth.
