This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty 09-29-09

Well there are now only five games left in the Mets 2009 campaign and they are still stuck on 67 wins. That means we are only two shy of their goal of 69 WINS – cuz everyone loves a 69 ( HA!) Well Nelson Figueroa pitched his heart out for the second straight appearance ( please put him in the pen as a long reliever spot starter !!) and once again our bats were stopped by a rookie that had zero wins and a opponents batting average of well over .300 against him along with a e.r.a of over .700 . I guess that sums up the season – when the pitching was on the money the bats were cold and vice versa m But once again welcome to the Mets 2009 season ( where hope goes to die !) Anyway on with the infamy !
Happy Birthday to one of the premiere closers in all of baseball – Heath Bell (1977), Yes as we all know Heath was our property until we traded him to the San Diego Padres for scrub outfielder Ben Johnson and a pitcher whose name I now forget, and what does he do – he gets mad and he comes back to get the first ever save in Citi Field history! ( revenge is as sweet as Willie Randolph’s ripple I guess)
Sadly on this date in 1975 the Mets lost their first icon when Casey Stengel passed away - If there was such a person that gave this franchise it’s personality it surely was Casey.

On this Date in 1989, New York Mets released reserve outfielder Jeff McKnight .
New York Mets released relief pitcher Mike Draper on this day in 1993.
Last thought before I go – I want to see those pictures of Gary Cohen with long flowing hair – I wonder if he looked like Alex Lifeson of Canadian prog rockers Rush ?

Ugh, I can’t wait for this weekend. The end of this season will be a mercy killing if I’ve ever seen one.

You think they can win 2 of the next 5 to get to 69 win? At this point I wonder they can even win 1 more.

I know the Astro’s are high on him but what do you guys think about Tim Bogar for manager. I am sure he would still choose the talent we have over the talent in Huston and would imagine we would pay better.

after jerry and willie (you know, jerry makes me actually miss Willie sometiems…) the bar is set pretty low.

I like Bogar, but have no real clue what he has done.

I’m still good with Teufel. One Tim is pretty much like another, and most importantly, they ain’t Jerry!

My problem with Teufel may not even be his fault but he has not had a lot of success. I like Bogar because he has been successful in the minors and is with a successful Boston team.

You know it’s been a long season when the GKR booth is talking about how long their hair was in their youth.

Heard Nelson talking on the post game last night about how he feels like he’s stuck in a Ground Hog day movie. He keeps coming out there pitching a decent game and they just can’t manage enough offense to get him a win. You’re right, Rusty. Epitomizes the whole season…..

Indeed a sad that in Mets infamy.

Re: Heath Bell, very interesting article over at fangraphs.com

Basically, Mets were dumb to trade Bell.
