( Not so ) BREAKING NEWS : Reyes feels discomfort ( again)

From The AP wire
New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes is being evaluated by doctors after feeling discomfort in his injured right hamstring while running.

Reyes has been on the disabled list since May. Mets manager Jerry Manuel said before New York’s game at Washington on Wednesday that doctors are trying to make a determination as to whether Reyes needs surgery.

The Mets say Reyes was bothered by the hamstring while running during his rehabilitation work Tuesday at a training facility on Long Island.

Reyes batted .279 with two homers, 15 RBIs and 11 steals in 36 games this season.
Oh great with our luck he will need to have his hamstring operated on and the doctor will amputate his leg entirely !! Nobody ever said being a Mets fan was easy guys

2-1 odds they cut open the wrong leg.

I said this in an earlier thread, but when you are coming back from an injury and working to get into shape, wouldn’t you expect some “discomfort”?

Searing pain might be bad, but discomfort sound slike almost normal for a pro athlete!

one problem diagnosing a general pain issue like this (discomfort, etc.) is that you can’t always figure out how much is in the patients head (pain tolerance). I know some people that would shake off and not mention a stress fracture, and others that will cry for an airlift for a stubbed toe.

    1. Kingman 26

And it has taken over four months for them to start considering surgery??

      1. trs86

They considered it all along but according to their docs there was no need. They were quoted as saying he should be fine after rehabbing and that it would not be easy because they needed to break up scar tissue. Well for some reason that was never broken up.

  2. trs86

Single, single single, single, 1 run. Can’t win with no HR and TERRIBLE baserunning.

  3. trs86

Something else I just noticed. During the Dukes AB, Warthen comes to mound and discusses “strategy” with Krod. He leaves the mound, Krod gets ready to pitch and shakes off Santos. What in the hell is that? Seriously, you did not discuss the damn pitch you were going to throw?

  4. trs86

Keith sounds like Bob Ucker, pass the hard stuff please.

    1. trs86

I wonder if we could get to 1,000 walks. That would be something.

  5. trs86

LOL, As Keith said, I quit. I will not mention this game tomorrow in only that everything MUST change.

    1. Kingman 26

Did you see Pagan stop as he was rounding third after being on second when Beltran got a 2-out hit?

Is this guy the stupidest adult on the planet?

What the hell is his problem??

      1. GravediggerHebner

Right now, if my choices for 2010 Mets 4th OF are Pagan or Sullivan, to me it’s Sullivan by a landslide. Pagan plays the game with a decided absence of baseball savvy.

        1. Kingman 26

          Agreed!

Pagan plays the game with the decided absence of even the vaguest signs of activity beyween his frigin ears….

  6. metsfan4decades

A blown save on a bases loaded walk and GS? To the Nats? Are you kidding me, KRod?

Add Frankie to the list of Mets who’d better figure it out this off season and come ready to go in ST.

    Sigh…..

    1. Kingman 26

MF4D—the only year I can think of worse than this would have to be 1993—the 100+ losses and Coleman, Bonilla, Murray, Saberhagen, bleach, earplugs, firecrackers, reporters threatened, “I don’t know no Jackie Robinson,” etc etc etc….

I suppose the ONE positive is at least these guys are not thugs and jerks….but boy, how much worse can it get?

I am going Saturday for my only game of the year and am almost afraid of what I may witness!!

      1. metsfan4decades

All I can say, Kingman is Wow, just wow…..

I seriously don’t know if it can get any worse, but I’m sure they’ll take a stab at it this last series of the year….

      2. metsgirl31

“how much worse can it get”

Man, everytime i ask that question they somehow manage to give me the answer. Tonite’s game leaves me at a loss for words. I just didn’t think they would actually get swept by the Nats…and certainly not in that fashion. Unbelievable.

        1. metsfan4decades

You’ve got that right. There is just nothing left to say.

    BREAKING NEWS:

SNY just announced Jose Reyes, after feeling ‘discomfort’, has had further tests. Results reveal a tear in his right hamstring. This over and above the tear in the hamstring tendon. This is an actual tear in the hamstring.

Great, just great. I don’t even know what to say.

    1. Mr North Jersey

They say every cloud has a silver lining well by now the Mets have more silver than in all of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

    2. fongy2

We’ll see you in 2011 Jose!
How is it possible that any person involved in treating Reyes this season could
possibly return next season AND along those lines, how can Omar survive this??
Aren’t all these folks HE hired?????
AND how can ANY Met fan truely believe that Omar is capable enough to turn
this mess around?? Anyone? Anyone trust this guy’s judgement on anything??
      Except the Wilpons?????

      1. metsfan4decades

        I am just speechless.

Carlin said this is a new injury. So I can only assume it tore with this latest test of running…..

        1. fongy2

          How does anyone know??
I’ve read stories of soldiers and marines who’ve lost legs in the war
and have run marathons in less than five months!
This really has become a bad clown show!

          1. Kingman 26

Fong, looking at it like that indeed puts Jose’s injuries in a disturbing new perspective….

I am going Saturday—what the hell am I going to witness??

      2. Mr North Jersey

I say Minaya just had a bad lap you watch he is determined to turn this around you just wait and see.

This season was a Category 5 Twister and Minaya was a sacrificial cow.

I say one more season how much worse can it get?

Besides you think the Wilpons will be able to find a better replacement?

Plus it’s not Minaya’s fault the players got hurt and Jerry style of managing is so laid back you would think he has a Lazyyboy permanently attached to his backside.

I think Minaya deserves one last chance with this team he built and if come June 1st 2010 there is no change by all means cut the cord and clean house.

Hey but that’s just my opinion I am sure Fongy doesn’t agree….
        :-)

        1. Kingman 26

I can agree about Omar, but Jerry and every last person having anything to do with medicine–from the head doctor to the guy who stocks the shelves with band-aids–MUST go.

They have been goofing around with Jose for over four months, and NOW he suffers a worse injury and may need surgery? When a week or two ago they said he might return this year?

As Richard Pryor said in Silver Streak when he stood up with bullets whizzing by “Who’s in charge here?”

        2. darknova306

In my opinion, Omar’s had his chances. Time to make a much needed change to this organization.

  8. darknova306

That was the single all-around worst baseball game I’ve seen played in a long time. Being swept by a 100 loss team… that pretty much sums up our franchise. Why does the last bit of time before the playoffs have to be so miserable? Why can’t I turn away from this disaster of a train-wreck?

  9. fongy2

Okay,so get rid of everyone BUT the guy who hired them all?!?
Then, trust him in not making matters worse.

Yeah, sounds like a good plan to me……..

    1. darknova306

      Fire them all…

    2. Kingman 26

Fong, you may be making the most sense of everyone tonight.

This is indeed a pretty interesting point you have here my friend.

Does Omar hire the doctors and trainers?

Can things possibly get worse this weekend?

Could Pagan make a little league team if he was solely judged on baserunning or an IQ test?

  10. stickguy

I am glad the Mets will be paying 17+mill to F Rod in 2012. SHould be a real good investment.

This is why you don’t spend a fortune on closers/

    1. Kingman 26

Geez, all of the great, salient, and wise points you guys are making are really not helping!

      :-)

      1. stickguy

        OK, how abou t this.

Just think about how much sweeter the champagne wil taste next year after sitting through this season.

        1. Kingman 26

          Ha!!!!

  11. stickguy

    look at the bright side.

This current stretch should be enough to force the wilpons to clear cut Jerry and the rest of the on field staff, and may actually push the needle on OMar too.

Just reassign him to be dir. play dev, head of scouting stuff, anything to keep him busy but away from the decision making invloved in picking up the pieces.

    1. trs86

You guys know I am not longer in Omar’s corner. However, how can he or the docs be blamed for Jose going out and running and tearing the hamstring in a totally different spot?

      1. stickguy

who knows if that tear wasn’t already there? Maybe he just made itworse?

seems to fit the symptoms at least.

  12. trs86

OK so Fongy not included here can anyone give a estimate on how long it will take for Reyes to be back if he has surgery this week?

    1. stickguy

well, Neise had surgery what, 2-3 weeks ago? And that was a full tear. ANd he was supposed to be 100% ready for ST.

Guys have come back in season from this too.

so, normal person? 3 months maybe 4?

Jose? 2012 when he wins the MVP for the yanks.

  13. trs86

At least MC’s drivel can make me laugh right now. Here we were being sensible on here earlier saying the Mets may trade Reyes at the end of next year. He has them releasing him.
“next season is a huge deal for jose, since, if he misses time and struggles, there is a chance the Mets do not pick up his option, making him a free agent…”

    Well then… LOL.

    1. Kingman 26

      Are you friggin kidding me!?

He actually suggested the Mets would cut ties with Reyes at his age?

Well, not to pat myself on the back, but again, Cerrone is where he is for two reasons precisely–timing and persistence.

His knowledge and perspective are almost embarrassing.

  14. gipperpdx

    Yawn…WHO is surprised by this?

    1. trs86

ME, it’s a different damn injury. How the hell does that even happen? Was he running different because the other still hurt? Is he frail as hell? Was he on roids?

      1. metsfan4decades

Good questions. Does the torn hamstring tendon make the area weaker? I’d have to say no, since according to what I’m reading, that hamstring tendon is one they often use in the arm for TJ surgery.

From all my experience with the medical world, I’ll offer my opinion:

I believe a very small tear was probably there all along – way back when he first had the pain – only no test was picking it up. The pain never went away and as best they could determine it was from scar tissue on? around? that torn hamstring tendon.
I think the tear is now big enough, or visible enough, to finally be picked up on an MRI – or whatever they used to diagnose this.
I truly believe this. It’s why the pain never went away – the original ‘day to day’ couple of days rest didn’t help, it’s why the last 4 months didn’t help. They were rehabbing/concentrating on something other than what the actual problem was.

        1. stickguy

that seems to make perfect sense. Certainly fits the symtoms and progression.

There are tears that don’t show up on an MRI. What you do expect is for the top docs at HSS to be able to deduce that if it is the case.

I have a friend that had to have surgery on his rotator cuff. This ws after a couple of scans that didn’t show anything, but it kept hurting whenever he started pushing it. FInally had to browbeat the Dr. to go in and look, and turns out there was a decent size tear that they had to sew up.

good nes? Get the surgery now, fix everything, and maybe finally get the right rehab going.

          1. fongy2

Stick, this isn’t your friend from the office we’re talking about
here, this is a world class professional athlete and muti million
dollar investment for a billion dollar company whos had 5 months
of exams, mri’s, treatments, rest, etc..
            This just can’t be.
And Brock, yes…Omar is responsible for hiring the training
            staffs hiring.
Jose is the most valuable and irreplacable member of this
team and whats happened with this kid is inexcusable!!!!

          2. metsfan4decades

Two recent experiences of mine with family members:

            - swollen left foot. 4 months, 1 foot surgeon, two orthopedic surgeons, numerous xrays, 2 MRIs. Nothing visible.
3rd orthopedic surgeon and 3 MRI? Finally revealed a fractured foot.

            - severe pain in right knee for 3 years. Numerous xrays and 2 MRIs revealed nothing other than mild arthritis. A little over 3 years, walking down steps, severe sudden pain, couldn’t walk on it. Finally, MRI that evening revealed a torn crushtive(?) ligament so severe there was only 15% fragments left. Obviously small tear all along that no one could pick up.

And that’s why they call it ‘practicing medicine’…..

          3. metsfan4decades

Fongy’s right though. Obviously, my family members didn’t have their own dedicated ‘team’ doctors and immediate access to specialists at HFSP.

          4. fongy2

AND…Would they return to the Doctors who couldn’t
correctly determine what the problem was in the 1st place???

        2. Kingman 26

Interesting MF4D–very sensible, and very locigal—probably why the Mets could not figure it out themselves….

  15. wannybackstra

Presumably the rehab he was doing for the tendon should have strengthened the muscle.

    1. fongy2

      One would think!….No?

  16. Mr. Mets Butler

I am beyond speechless. Not to mention they dragged this thing on all year, but to have Reyes running with less than a week to play is insensitive and stupid. This organization SUCKS!!!

  17. CaseStreet

so this means Pagan is leading off next year?

Or will Omar implement Operation Sign an Angel of Anaheim?

BTW, I hear Omar Vizquel may be looking for a job. Any interest? (I kid, maybe)

  18. wannybackstra

At this point the Mets will have to look at someone more like Marco Scutaro than Alex Cora to be the “backup” middle infielder. They’ll need someone more capable of playing every day if need be. And at worst, it wouldn’t hurt to have a guy like Scutaro (or someone else) giving Castillo, Reyes and Wright more frequent breaks.
