This weekend marks the end of the summer for me. The last weekend of watching the Mets and like the title reads, I will be watching them. I have to, their my team. And just so you know, I just finished watching the Nationals sweep the Mets out of Washington via a grand slam and the Phillies wrap up the East.
I’m a masochist, a glutton for punishment, I need help, therapy and beer- but then again, I’m a Mets fan. I stick by them and I take pride in that. I’m not a fair weather fan who only likes a team when they win.
My plan this weekend is to watch the Friday and Saturday game and listen to the last game on the radio. The Mets are summer to me. It’s part of my summer routine- 6:30 pregame, 7:00 start and lets end it with SNY’s post game. If they were ending the season on the West Coast, a triple expresso would be on the schedule as well.
The Mets and the summer, I dare you to find something better.
Next week, there will be baseball, just not MY baseball. I’ll be rooting against all the teams that I hate. Fun, yes, but not half as fun watching the Mets.
I know, I need serious help.
So on Sunday during the 9th inning, I’ll run to my fridge and grab a cold beer and think about all the times the Mets have given me. And although this year doesn’t have many, I have enough to get me through this cold winter. I plan to tune into Howie Rose and Wayne Hagan of WFAN and reminisce about  Bob Murphy talking about “Honey Do” time. He always called a great game.
There will be plenty of time to discuss trades and signings but for the last weekend for what seems like a very long time, I will watch the Mets and hope and pray that next year whatever curse this team had on it will go to another team and we will get the last laugh.
I could only hope.
Until then I will try to enjoy the last weekend with the Mets. And even though they are bad, bad Mets baseball is better than no Mets baseball at all.

GREAT pic of Mr Met bloodied!!
PERFECT!
“…bad Mets baseball is better than no Mets baseball at all.”
How VERY true.
Nice piece, and I will be watching the last game as well.
However, I strongly recommend bourbon or vodka over beer—it definitely goes better with seasons like 1987, 1993, and 2009, for my money, the Great Triumvirate of Met Horrors.

I like your sentiments.
I wil actually be going to the last game, and we only got those tickets a few weeks ago, so it’s not like I am just using them up!
I have been to quite a few last games in a row (not quite sure how many), and after being there for game 162 in 2007 and 2008 (thank you Tommy G.), at least this year should be more relaxing. Just me and my group, and a few dozen other people with nothing better to do!
I know the team has not been very successful, but this is the 1st time in 4 years that that are not playing for the postseason (or in already of course). So that is still a good run.
And like Gonzo, I wil lmiss having them to watch until next year. Playoffs are only of marginal interest, and some teams I just won’t watch!
I also see very few games on TV, since I am out of market. Maybe you people that get SNY become spoiled or jaded? I consider it a treat to see them play, although I would appreciate if they played a little better when I am paying to be there.
I am also hoping that the booing is kept to a minimum. Sitting in a half empty stadium while a bunch of drunks exercise their 1st ammendment rights will get real old, real fast. And I doubt it wil lbe positive for the 2 little kids that wil lbe with us (and it will really tick off their mother!)
at least on Monday, the Mets are again tied for first at 0-0

Well stated. I’d be watching the games this weekend except that I’ll be on the road for my cousin’s wedding. If I can catch part of one, I’ll be lucky. I honestly can’t wait for the playoffs. No matter the team, I love baseball and playoff baseball is the most exciting of all (even if my Mets aren’t in it, like they usually aren’t).

Well, you’re in good company gonzo b/c I’ve done the same thing – watched just about every game – and will be doing the same this weekend.
If you’re a fan, you’re a fan – what are you going to do?
But oh, the pain….

So true, February is the worst month!
