Yesterday’s silliness took all the air out of the off season balloon. Now there is nothing to look forward to for months (and even then, not likely to be exciting).

I’m guessing that the “braintrust”, having made their appearance with fatty mcfan, will now go into hiding in the bunker.

And given that Boras controls at least 1 of the few big FAs, nothing too exciting is going to happen in that market, with teams also waiting for the 11th hour for bargains. And I still doubt they are going to make a huge number, or any highly significant, trades.

SO, pretty much 3 moths from now, we will be scratching our heads trying to figure out if the Mets still exist! TRS’s fingers will be falling off as he trys to keep up the post count all by himself.

But, at least we can take comfort in the fact that your 2010 Mets: They’re Omarlicious!

Did that officially win the contest? Can I get on the masthead as the unofficial sloganmaster of TRDMB?

I am sure after you fume for a while you will again be right back hoping for the best.

I still have a lot of hope for this off-season because Omar knows it will be his last if he does not produce. Same with Jerry. We shall see what that does.

The only problem is that it’s unlikley that we will see major improvements via free agency as the class is fairly weak this year. It’s going to require a lot of smart but small moves and some lucky ones.

        1. Kingman 26

We are going to see Lackey in a Met uniform, for better or worse, and surely for an inflated price.

Where else is he going to go?

          1. udontmesswthejohan

Well, whether he is overpaid or not, that would certainly be an improvement. Problem is, there are so many holes, you can’t possibly fill them all with high profile free agent signings.

I’d be shocked if Holliday signed with anyone other than Los Cards.

          2. darknova306

You don’t need to fill them all with high priced FAs. A good GM would get some solid mid-level guys to plug into those holes to present a competent team around the core, like how Omar went out and grabbed DeRosa for cheap last year… oh, right.

          3. dentulous

            LOL!!

          4. steveo

Um! the angels ? thet don’t they don’t pony up

        2. darknova306

We’ll probably see the standard Omar magic trick: fix one hole on the team and convince the fans that that’s all the team needed. Wake me in April 2011.

        3. trs86

Depends on the cash available. We need a #2 and a LF. There happens to be a very respectable #2 and 2 very good LF on the market.

          1. darknova306

And we still don’t have any straight answers on budget for the offseason. There was lots of circular answers and nonsense regarding that yesterday.

      2. Kingman 26

I am right back hoping for the best.

If they were sincere yesterday, and if we combine that with the absolute truth you write about Omar knowing that 2010 better damn well be VERY Omarlicious or he will be gone, then we all do indeed have a lot to be optimistic about this offseason.

Let’s just hope Lackey and Holliday don’t get overworked in the playoffs so they are in tip-top shape come February….

And go Twins/Tigers, Angels, and those pesky 80s-Mets-like Phils–let’s keep it in the division!

        1. metsfan4decades

Glad to hear the optimism, Kingman!

And no, I really cannot root for the Phils on any level, for any reason.

3 and elimination for them. That’s my fondest wish….

          1. udontmesswthejohan

Someone asked me yesterday who I would root for in a Yankees/Phillies WS. As unpalletable as that sounds, I would definetly have to go with the Phillies. I’m really dreading having to live with these pompous idiot fans should the Yankees win.

        2. darknova306

You’d actually root for the Phils to repeat…? My brain can’t even begin to fathom something as horrific as that.

And do you honestly ever think these idiots are sincere? We should all know better than to believe a word coming from the upper levels of our organization.

          1. Kingman 26

Yes, I would root for the Phils over the Cards, Dodgers, Yanks or Red Sox most enthusiastically. If it is the Tigers, Twins, or Angels, I might root for them. The Rockies I am not too fond of or too strongly against.

I kind of would like to keep it in the division if we cannot win. And frankly, I just do not hate the Phils like I hate the Yanks and like a lot of others here do. I think they have done an amazing job the last few years, and they are 100% right about Jose’s damn dancing.

And it will be that much more fun dethroning the Phils next year if they have a good postseason.

As for the other question–no, I don’t believe them at all. But the bottom line says that they have to make some serious moves or they will get absolutely lambasted and attendance will suffer somewhat. Sure, the season tix will be paid for, but less people attending and less walk-ups means lots less revenue from parking, hot dogs, souvenirs, etc. That is a lot of money.

          2. darknova306

I hate the Phillies more because of their fans than anything. The Yankees don’t bother me that much because I’ve become used to the arrogance, and one more championship won’t change anything other than giving them a few more bandwagoners. Once the Red Sox broke their curse, I stopped rooting for them to fail, as the fans were no longer in misery. Cards I don’t like, and I truly despise LaRussa, but they wouldn’t bother me that much. I’d like the Dodgers to lose just so the Wilpons will be sad. :p

          3. metsfan4decades

It’s very, very close for me between the Yanks and Phils. Life long glee on rooting against the Yankees vs. recent rivalry with the Phils.
I think I can say though (god forbid) if it came down to Phils/Yanks in the WS, I’m rooting against the Phils. At least if the Yankees win, I don’t have to hear all of 2009, in our own division – the 2009 WC Phillies.

Go Rockies! Go Dodgers! Go Angels! Go anyone not named Yankees and Phillies…

          4. trs86

Completely agree. Actually how much more cocky can Yankee’s fans get? They already are the best franchise in history and one more win does nothing to that. The Phillies are baseball’s alltime losingest team. You don’t think their bandwagon fans will become even more arogant if they win back to back? Where were they when they sucked?

          5. metsgirl31

            Totally agree with this.

  2. CaseStreet

    Omarlicious!

  3. prismo

More Philadelphia fans fighting/stabbing each other.

Well, nothing said yesterday made me feel even a shred of confidence in this team’s ability to put together a winner for 2010. The only acceptable move would have been to fire Omar. Anything less to me is just a whitewash and a lame attempt at duping the fans. Haven’t they learned yet? This isn’t St. Louis, there is no blind devotion here.

    1. trs86

I wanted Omar gone, but I am not going to sit here and say that firing Omar or keeping Omar is the end all be all. Even if fired, it’s no promise they could have or would have found anyone better. I will stick to my guns that he was able to build a contender before and I think he CAN again. Is it more or less likely, I would guess Less right now but I also think all of us who are saying it CAN’T be done are just allowing our emotions to guide us.

      1. CaseStreet

I also don’t think firing Omar would’ve made things better for next year.
I can only hope we go into ST having addressed all of the teams’ weaknesses.

    2. wannybackstra

Firing Omar would not be enough. Jerry needs to go with him. If I could only keep one I’d actually keep Omar.

Omar is responsible for paper. On paper, the Mets looked good. On the field, the Mets looked terrible. The manager is responsible for what occurred on the field.

      1. charlie_s

I agree. I would actually like to see them all go (Wilpons to ballboy).

      2. trs86

Agreed, Omar has been successful in building a contender with the Mets before. We can hope he can again. Jerry is just a broken tool.
