Interesting interview here. Manuel did say a lot of things I agreed with. Can’t stand him but a lot of things that he said were what I am currently thinking about the direction the Mets must go in. Still wish someone else was taking them in that direction but I have to get over that.

Something else with this. Jerry admitted what we all already have said. This year is it for him, Omar, and the core if they do not come through.

doesn’t matter what Jerry says, cuz he does the opposite. His words have no value, IMO.

True, but this is not player moves or rambling here. I feel this is the truth. This year is put up or shut up year for all of them, except the Wilpons of course.

I was just thinking again about the coaching staff and the fact that they have committed to Warthen already — before Dave Duncan “hits free agency” in the offseason — is outrageous.

What are the odds that Duncan really does hit FA? And a PC is a cheap contract, so say duncan calls the mets in Nov. and says he really wants to come to NY to fix the staff. Boom, Warthen gets “reassigned” (hey, they need pitching coaches in the minors too!)
There was no practical reason to renew him now, it was purely for PR reasons. It’s not like anyone else was going to hire him.

I didn’t listen to the sopt (frankly, I would have to be totally hammered to listen to Jerry and fatso have a conversation, and I didn’t have the time today!). But, I read some of the recap elsewhere.
At least JErry admitted what I (among others) railed on him for. He was trying to win to save his own hide, and any development of players for the future was irrelevant to him. Too bad the PsTB didn’t care about that little fact in a lost season.
At least he was honest that it was a 1 year reprieve, but there is a big difference between getting fired with time on your deal (meaning the team has to eat money) and just not getting renewed when your deal expires.
Problem is, how much will he do trying to keep his job next year? K Rod and Pedro F both pitching 120 innings before the ASB? Johan throwing 150 pitches every game? Hell, he won’t be around in 2011, so why should he care if they are?
Jerry is a huckster. Has he admitted, even once, that anything was his fault? Or that he even played a small part in any of the failures? He must be a whiz at playing hot potato!

Did he really say that he was not developing youngsters to save his own skin?
As Jeff Spicoli would have said, that is BOGUS.

And that alone should be grounds for his dismissal, Tough to build a team when the leader’s selfishness is on record.

I was a quote from a poster on another daid that claimed to be listen and indicated that jerry said it. And no, I am not going to parse the 20 inutes from hell looking for it!
I know he did it, that’s enough for me! screw verification.

Oh, and about the “core” being on a make good deal? BS.
follow the logic. If the team underperforms, omar and jerry go (among many others). Even Jerry admits this.
So, that means a new management team will be brought in to reshape the team. One that has no ties, and no baggage.
wouldn’t it make sense then that they would evaluate the talent on hand, and utilize it to put together the best team possible?
Sure, they might trade a “core” guy, but not to appease the fans, or just to shake up the team. Heck, THEY would be the shake up.
besides, there really isnt that much of a core after 2010 anyway, depending on how you define the core. Beltran will be 33, have ? knees, and 1 year and a NTC left. What are you doing with him? Johan and K Rod? Johan is either the key building block of the staff, or untradeable due to his contract if he isn’t. K rod will have 2 years at huge money left (backloaded deal with a vesting option, right?) so he is going nowhere.
That leaves DW and Reyes. Unless you count guys like Pelfrey in the “core”.
DW will have 2 years, manageable money, left. Think the new GM will rush out to trade him just to “shake things up”? Not me. Of course, I also assume he will look more like the DW of old next year, or all bets are off!
so, that leaves Reyes. A FA after 2010, uless the Mets pick up his option. And unless he is hurt all year, or seems like he has lost all his skills, they would be silly not to. But, do you then trade him to shake things up?
If anything, the real decision is whether to extend any of these guys before the deals run out (actually, only beltran and reyes need to be thought about, since DW deal goes throuhg 2012). Or let them go in as last year guys into 2011.

How Fernando Martinez’s prospect stock has fallen in the eyes of a BA writer:
Harry (Babylon, NY)
Fernando Martinez or Denard Span
Jim Callis (2:48 PM)
Span.
stickguy
10/7/2009-4:58pm at 4:58 pm (UTC -4)
this is a stupid comparison. Span is 25, will be 26 by ST next year, and has alost 1000 ABs in the majors so far. Decent numbers, nothing spectacular.
why exactly is he being compared to a 20 YO kid with 1/2 season at AAA (with good number BTW), and ~90 ABs in the majors on an emergency call up?
why not say : shwan Bowman or Evan Longoria?
