Tim Dierkes of MLBTraderumors.com passes on a Bart Hubbuch tweet. Hubbuch says the Mets will receive Outfielder Chris Carter and First Baseman Eddie Lora.
Wagner pitched well in his time with Boston, posting a 1.72 ERA, 26 strikeouts, and 8 walks in 15.6 innings. He could also have an impact in the playoffs. The Red Sox agreed to decline Wagner’s $8MM option for 2010, but the pitcher expects the team to offer arbitration. He told WEEI’s Rob Bradford he’ll probably turn it down, which would mean a new team will have to surrender a draft pick to sign him.
Update (Hat tip to GravediggerHebner): Steve Popper adds:
According to Popper: Carter already on Mets 40 man roster, which stands at 38; from July 1 to the end of the AAA season, Sept. 7, Carter hit .333 with 9 homers and 32 RBI (.294, 16, 61 overall); Lora is 20 and was Boston’s “Minor League Latin Program†player of the year in 2008 when he hit .300 with 5 HR and 26 RBI in 35 games for the Sox’ DSL team.
Good luck Billy!

I just read that in Steve Popper’s blog and then came to note it here but voila! Case is on the Case! Kudos for promptness.

Billy may have to wait until after the draft to sign… which is probably okay for him anyway(after the draft, I think draft pick compensation is out the window).

i put billy in the same mold as loduca – out spoken and brash – 2 qualities that were sorely missed this past season

who knows. maybe Carter will be one of those late bloomers. Not that I can remember the other ones. Cust?
might have to trade him to the AL though…
wonder if there is any chance this kid could actually win a regular job next year? Might be a decent option as a bench bat/semi platoon/spare OF-1B type (oh wiat, that could be murphy..)

One thing about Carter that gives me some hope that he’ll be a serviceable major league player: he was clearly blocked in Boston. With Manny & then Bay in LF, JD Drew in RF, Big Papi at DH and Youkilis at 1B it’s not exactly like they had room. The Mets are not laden with similar talent and should be able to find more ML PT for Carter.
And something about Lora that should make Mr. Baby happy, he was born in NYC!

I guess he wrote it yesterday, but I just read it now.
Toby Hyde’s take on the Mets possible hiring of Wally Backman over at Mets Minor League Blog is pretty sobering.
Essentially he asks, “imagine that Wally Backman never played for the Mets. Would the Mets be hiring a guy who over the last 4 years has managed only low level independent league teams?”
He concludes: “once again it’s not only the result but also the process that is flawed with the Mets.”
If I take a moment and remove 1986 emotion from the equation, I can’t help but agree with Mr. Hyde.

If wags signs with another team, netting the RS 2 picks, it would appear the mets got hosed.

I don’t see it that way, it was a gamble to keep him or a gamble to trade him. The Mets took the safer of the gambles.
