This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty 10-12-09

This is the price we gotta play / and all the games we gotta play/ It makes me wonder if it’s even worth to carry on.
The Price” by Twisted Sister
Yes my fellow Mets fans this is the price we have to pay by not reaching the post season! We have sit around meekly as all the Skankee fans out there celebrate sweeping The Minnesota Twins and declaring it is their manifest destiny to be the last one standing on the apex , and being crowned the Kings Of The Mountain of Major League Baseball. All this while we now root for Somebody – ANYBODY !! to beat the Yankees ( except the Phillies that is ) and debate amongst ourselves for who or whom Paris ( oops I meant Jeff) Wilpon will open up the Sterling Equities vault for and allow Omar to sign. But as the song goes ” It’s a game we’re gonna lose, though it’s our life we gotta choose… ” and we have chosen The Mets as our team and we have to roll with the punches like we have through most of our lives. Now on with the INFAMY !! ( Oh yeah there are only 175 days until the Mets open the 2010 season against Florida at Citi Field.)

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Sid ” EL SSSSID” Fernandez (1962) Sid was the most overlooked pitcher from that dominant pitching staff of the ’80′s and when he had his curve ball going – there was no stopping him !! It also killed me When Steinbrenner coaxed him out of retirement for a ill fated comeback attempt to tweak the Mets like he did with Darryl And Doc before him.
Second Baseman of the ’06 team José Valentin is 40 (1969) In my opinion Valentin was the Ray Knight of that team ! He showed fire he didn’t take crap from anyone and he helped tutor the younger players such as Jose Reyes and his leadership is greatly missed now.

Sadly on this date in ’89 the much maligned Joe Foy passed away. He will always be known as the the player we got in return for Amos Otis, And while Otis went on to have a stellar career  for the Kansas City  Royals  Foy was benched midway through the season and was gone entirely by ’71. It is said that his battles with substance abuse punched his ticket out of town.
On this date in 1981,  The New York Mets released pitcher Mike Marshall

New York Mets claimed utility infielder Desi Relaford on waivers from the San Diego Padres on October 12, 2000.

Well guys lets hope the Colorado Rockies can get their asses in gear and pull an upset against the Phillies  Cuz I don’t want  a Yanks/ Phils World Series this year !!

    1. trs86

Really would make for an entertaining WS with at least a story line.

  2. prismo

Hey, what happened to the real dirty chat room? Would be fun while watching these postseason games if anyone else was into it.

    1. trs86

Uhm, wow. I don’t know where the hell it DID go. LOL.

      1. trs86

        Broken.

    2. metsfan4decades

I was wondering the same thing myself the other day. I would have participated.

  3. prismo

    WOO GO ROX!!!!!

    1. trs86

shhh. That was your fault. LOL.

  4. fongy2

Sorry fellas, I know everyone hates it BUT…Thats what the Phillies do.
    The Anti-Mets.

    1. trs86

      Blah blah blah. LOL.

      1. trs86

Seriously, we already have to listen to Phillies fans try and do their best to speak intelligently enough to even rub it in and now we have to listen to our own fans do it? And you came on here when it happen just to say it? Come on Fongy, give us a break. We all deserve it.

    2. mrbill

      The clutch-mets Fongy

      1. trs86

Good God, do you guys flock to this board anytime you can take swings at die hards?

        1. fongy2

          Yeah,…b/c we’re not THE die-hards?!
ATleast with the sillies, one of these NL teams will have a chance to
          beat the yankees.

          1. trs86

You know what I mean Fongy. Would you rather I call the ones like me the sunshinners? Anyway, I still can’t understand why you guys would show up just to make that kind of comment? What is it’s purpose? I love you and all but I don’t get it. Like we don’t know the Mets stunk and the Phillies are good right now?

    3. fongy2

b/t/w, from earlier, one vote for Lackey.
I’ll take the ace pitcher in his prime for less money and yrs than the all-star
corner outfielder in his prime represented by Scott Boras, whos done his best
work in the thin air of Colorado and hitting next to the best player in the
game in St.Louis. Not exactly two places which ever display any negativity
toward their ballplayers. So, yeah give me Lackey for 5ys & 75 Million
and we’ll address the LF some other way.

      1. trs86

I am not sure right now WHO will cost more. If the Yankee’s don’t get involved in either, who knows? Holliday could fall to that same 4/60.

        1. fongy2

          Yeah, good luck with that!

          1. trs86

Mets, Braves, Yankees, Giants after that who is going to pay Holliday more than your “5/75″? For that matter as Wanny brought up in the thread who is going to pay Lackey that?

          2. fongy2

Theres always the Boras mystery team!
Besides, we gonna get into a bidding war for
            him w/the Braves and giants?
            And what about the Rangers?
And whos to say he doesn’t resign w/Stl if
            bidding is limited.
Like I’ve said before, lets not waste much time
on this. Explore BUT be ready to move on.
            Remember, Omar does multi-task well.

          3. trs86

I am not sure about the Multi-tasking but it should be a fun off-season. Lots of different directions they can go in. Most likely all kinds of things we have not even thought about.
Who knows, maybe we get Upton for Reyes and the board explodes. At least the site would take off. LOL.

          4. fongy2

Which Upton? TB doesn’t need a SS.

          5. fongy2

besides, it was amongst the group here
I 1st learned Omar didn’t go after the
group of OFers available this past off season b/c he was too busy fixin’ the ‘pen.

          6. trs86

Actually they could move Bartlett to 2B but it was a joke I think. I am sure that TB could find room for Reyes.

          7. trs86

Not I. I said he did not do it because he chose not to. Good or bad.

          8. trs86

And to your point on TB not needing a SS. I wonder if they are as confident as you? Bartlett had a career year but he also had an OPS 200 points higher than his career averages.

          9. fongy2

Yeah but neither they nor we even know
if Reyes gets on the field in 2010 and
if he does, when and in what condition?
For several mil more than they’re
paying Barlett who by the way they
went to the WS with a yr ago.

  5. trs86

Yippie, Phillies win!!!!! (This ad was brought to you by Mr. Bill) LOL!

  6. trs86

While entertaining, the first round was missing any real competition. Last time the first round was over this quickly?

    1. fongy2

Atleast the best teams moved on. Maybe?

      1. trs86

I think clearly they did in all but maybe the Dodgers Cardinals but I thought the Cards were overrated anyway.

        1. fongy2

          Agreed.

          1. trs86

And I honestly don’t know what to expect for Dodgers Phillies.

          2. fongy2

            Phillies in 6.

          3. trs86

Dodgers in 7. LOL. I have no clue. I don’t know which team is better. If the Dodgers get good starting pitching and it comes down to the Phillies pen, Dodgers in 5. If the Dodgers can’t match Lee then Phillies in 5. Who knows.

          4. GravediggerHebner

Here I am going to give “Fongy-like” credit to the Phillies: if it goes 7, the Phils will find a way to win it. The Dodgers chances of advancing are enhanced IMO if they keep the series under 7 games.

          5. fongy2

            You stole my thunder Heb.
Here’s hoping for an all LA WS
BUT the Phillies are unaffraid ALWAYS
            and KNOW how to WIN.
The Dodgers still need to prove those
things against the best team in the NL.
            So, we’ll see.

  7. fongy2

Maybe we dont deserve this but mgmt certainly does.
Another phillie world series would be a fitting end
to whats happened here the past 3yrs.

    1. trs86

Man Fongy, you need to move on. I don’t think any of us know what would have happen this year if not for the injuries. I can’t add 2007 and 2009 on management. 2007 the players choked and 2009 was a lost season. You can blame 2008 on management for sure.

      1. fongy2

        Easier said then done!
Obviously from all the firings of the past yr and a half the Wilpons
feel its been more than just ’08 which someone (anyone but Omar)
        needs to accept blame for.

        1. trs86

Again, during that 2008 you could blame it on management for sure. Thus the reasoning for last year’s firings. This year, some guys not directly involved with the team got fired and a 1st base coach. Not much turnover, like it or not.

          1. fongy2

            Not much turnover?
Omar’s chief assistants,Latin farm director and acouple MORE
big league Coaches. Not much of a turn over?

    2. GravediggerHebner

I don’t think the Phillies need to win the WS for a strong message to get through to Mets mgmt, in fact even if the Phils had been swept out by the Rox in 3 straight the message to the Mets would be the same: the Phillies have been in the post season, with the opportunity to win it all, 3 years in a row, from your division; the Mets have not had that opportunity for 3 years in a row. A WS (or 2) are merely cherries on top of a sundae, a sundae the Mets were denied.

      1. trs86

Yeah, I am not sure the Mets management or owners are thinking about how the Phillies are doing as much as they are about how to get the Mets back to the playoffs. Only time the Phillies would come up is that they have to go through them in the division to do it. I doubt any of Omar, Jerry etc are even watching the games.

        1. fongy2

Ha, ha!…When did that become the Wilpon’s goal??
Hasn’t always been “meaningful games in September??
In the words of Jim Mora…”Playoffs!”..”Playoffs”….”Playoffs?!?”…..
          ..”playoffs?!?”……”playoffs???”…….

        2. GravediggerHebner

Agreed. The problem is that the Phillies are representing your division in the post season tournament and you are not. What the Phillies do in that tournament is not the problem.

          1. fongy2

Except we have to get past them if we ever intend to win.
But understood. Not exactly what I meant though.
