After doing my morning browsing I came across 2 names that I think would fit the Mets quite well for next year and should cost them very little in cash and or prospects.Â
First on the list. Ryan Garko. The Mets were rumored to be interested in Garko last year when Delgado went down. At the time Garko was putting up a respectable line of : .285, .362, .464, .826 with Cleveland. Garko was traded to San Fran and for reasons unknown fell apart. Because of this Garko has been identified by MLBTR as a non-tender candidate. A closer look at his stats revels why he would be a perfect fit for the Mets. Even factoring in his late season struggles, the RH Garko managed to hit .308, .391, .479, .870 against LHP for the season. His career splits against LHP show an even more impressive .887 OPS. Factoring in Murphy’s struggles against LHP (.223, .267, .415, .662) and Garko’s ability to stand in the OF, why would the Mets NOT be interested?
Player #2:
Delmon Young. Young struggled again in 2009. He seems to have fallen out of favor, if he was ever in, in Minnesota. At this point he is only considered by them as a 4th OF and he does not have the defensive ability to be a 4th OF. However, could this 23 year old with 3.5 seasons already under his belt, be the next Frenchy? Young has shown flashes of his once great hype each year but seems to never be able to put it together. Would it be a good strategy of the Mets to go with Young, who only makes a little over 1 million and is still under team control, in the OF and focus on pitching?
Would a lineup of Reyes, Castillo, Wright, Beltran, Frenchy, Murphy/Garko, Young, Santos be good enough if they Mets bring in pitching?

Please tell me that is not THE Delmon Young youa re talking about. He’s a bust man. call me crazy, but we don’t need another OF who hits 10 HR’s.

Ive always thought garko would be a good fit for the mets…if anything for a bench role. I would take a look at him for sure.

if garko is really a no-com FA, then yes, they should seriously look at him. Do you have any idea what kind of D he brings to the table though? Also, do you know his splits against RH pitching?
Young? No idea what to think of him, given how he really may have been rushed tot he show. Is he worth a flyer? Maybe, but what (the big question) would Minn want for him?
If he was replacing Frenchy, even better, but no, I don’t think the OF with both of them (unless you are really banking on a break out year finally, or playing pure gap hitting ball) is gonna get it done.

I can tell you one thing after reading many of the Twins blogs over the last couple of weeks….those fans really hate Young. If they could trade him for a bag of balls, they would. I’m not sure if that translates to management and no one has any faith in him but if they don’t, maybe they know something we don’t….

TRS I know that you read A LOT more than I do on the web about other baseball teams so I am going to trust that your declaration about Delmon Young “At this point he is only considered by them as a 4th OF” is fact based and not just your opinion.
In the context of facts, here are some more interesting ones about Delmon Young. After Morneau went down and Cuddyer moved from the OF to 1B, Young’s playing time increased. Here’s how he did in Sept/Oct regular season:
26 games started
110 plate appearances, 103 at bats
14 runs scored
35 hits
7 doubles
1 triple
4 home runs
18 RBI
.340 BA
.364 OBP
.544 SLG
They traded 2 players to get him. He just turned 24. He is 3-4 years away from free agency. He made “just” $1.125 mil last year. He came through for them during their run to the division title. Carlos Gomez fits the 4th OF profile (right now) better than he does. Young or Kubel can either DH or play a corner OF spot, with Span in CF and Cuddyer back in the other corner OF spot. Why are they going to get rid of him?

Well played Stick.
You may have hit on a slogan for the 2010 Mets. Or at least a slogan for the 2010 empty seats at Citi Field.

And that is just so sad…
I wonder if it’s just us Met fans, or the rest of the league looks at the Mets and sees the same. If yes, I wonder how many years it’s going to take to get back some credibility.
Actually, I guess just winning it all would do it.

Grave, I know how he did but they have had a love hate relationship for a while now. Even today on MLBTR it was mentioned they have to determine if that 26 game Young was the real Young.

26 games in september is plenty for the mets to make a decision about a LF.

Fair point. IMO when you’re talking about a 24 year old highly touted high draft pick for which you traded away a quality young SP, you either hold onto him or you ask for the moon for him. Either scenario does not help the Mets.

bad way to think, but I know GMs do it.
no different than people that overpay for a car, and then expect to sell it for more than it is worth today because they overpaid yesterday.

i hate the phillies.
maybe the angels will take care of the AL, but I am at least 95% sure that it will be phils and yanks. I hope it snows or rains on every game.
