This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty 10-16-09

Good Afternoon all. Well what can I say about last nights Dodgers/ Phillies game except I’m not rooting for any team for the rest of this post season because whoever I root for ends up losing ( See Twins, Minnesota and Rockies, Colorado) . And If I do root even half heartedly for the Yanks and Phils I am deathly afraid that they will win. So what am I to do? the answer is lock myself in my room with nothing but Mystery Science Theater 3000 and the entire Monty Pythons Flying Circus series on DVD with a occasional bathroom break thrown in for good measure until this damned thing is over with !!!
Anyway with that said ON WITH THE INFAMY !!!
Happy Birthday to former broadcaster from ’82 – 2000 – Tim McCarver (1941) I always loved Tim because he came across as unbiased and fair . Plus when the team was bad he had no problem bashing the manager, General Manager and Ownership. His outspokenness ended up being his downfall when he was fired in 2000 where the Yankees jumped at the chance of tweaking the Mets and signed him to their booth. These days Tim broadcasts for Fox Sports and in my opinion his broadcasting skills have diminished greatly.
Happy 50th b-day to the player we traded Kevin Mitchell for – that’s right the man who obviously didn’t want to play for us – Kevin McReynolds (1959) . In his duration with the Mets McReynolds wielded a potent bat and a accurate arm but there wasn’t any fire nor was there any passion to his play and it showed.
Reliever Billy Taylor is 48 (1961) . We acquired Billy Taylor during the the push for the ’99 pennant push from the Oakland A’s for one time Generation K stud Jason Isringhausen. As we all know Taylor was a bust for us ( especially in the playoffs) while Izzy became an elite closer.
Reserve outfielder Darren Reed is 44 (1965) .
Reliever Josias Manzanillo is 42 (1967) .

New York Mets sold outfielder Don Bosch to the Montreal Expos on October 16, 1968.

Reliever Josias Manzanillo granted free agency on October 16, 1995.

Don Florence ( whoever the hell he was) was granted free agency on October 16, 1995.

Lastly when I read about the comments Peter Gammons made to Michael Kay in regards to Omar Minaya being Jeff Wilpons puppet. Honestly this doesn’t surprise me . Anyone who remembers during last off seasons hot stove I was screaming bloody murder that after a SNY hot stove report interview with Omar that Omar was stumbling and fumbling with the softball questions that were lobbed his way. Omar looked flustered about the Manny Ramirez talk or even when he was trying to rationalize why what happened to the Derrek Lowe negotiations and why they broke down. Omar hasn’t had ” full autonomy since the end of the ’07 season in my opinion and Jeff Wilpon is the ” brains ” ( oxymoron) behind the architecture of this team. Do I feel bad for Omar ? No but he is wayyy more qualified for being a G.M that Paris ( I mean Jeff) could ever be. By the way I love the Nelson Doubleday quote regarding Jeff

Rusty, why not just watch the game, and don’t root? Enjoy the action, and just don’t give a flying crapsicle who wins.

It would be like watching a football game with the Chiefs vs. the Bengals. Who cares, but it least it is better than watching QVC!
