its unfortunate that when i was at the last saturday game of the season there was a chant of jose jose jose joseeee cant playyy cant playyyy – made me sick

It’s kinda funny, though. Sad thing is that it fits until he gets back on the diamond and proves he’s healthy and still has it. Reyes is still my biggest concern for next year outside the rotation.

    2. CaseStreet

      that’s pretty disgusting

I’m just hoping we can bat Jose further down the line so he’s not putting too much pressure on his legs by trying to steal many bases

      1. CaseStreet

I’m thinking Crawford, Abreu, Upton, Figgins, Damon, or Holliday would give the Mets 20+ base stealers in the 1-5 spot.

I am ready for this off-season to get moving. I have had to read the rational posters on here going all in for Lackey “Just overpay no matter what it takes” to MCBlog going off the deep end with how we need to sign Harden and trade for Haren or sign Lackey. Then it’s trade for Halladay and Haren…
Now it’s starting to spread. Sherman thinks we need to look at the following pitchers: Sherman’s ideas include Jeremy Guthrie, Gil Meche, and Ervin Santana. So uhm Lets get Baltimore to trade Guthrie at .65M or the Angels to trade a 26 year old stud. Yup, right after we give 5/90 for Lackey we can go out and get Guthrie or Santana too.

    1. Mr North Jersey

TRS but don’t you want Lackey?

      1. trs86

Yes I want Lackey at 3/45, 4/60. 5/90, please run, fast.

        1. Mr North Jersey

LoL how about 2 for 40 with a option for a 3rd year at 30?

          1. trs86

Uh no that won’t work either. LOL. I just don’t want the Mets to vastly overpay for Lackey just because he is the best pitcher on a bad market.

          2. Mr North Jersey

Ahh LoL but how do you know that they would be overpaying?

          3. Mr North Jersey

That might be the market rate. I remember when 3 million a year was the going rate. Maybe 20 million will be the new avg rate.

          4. trs86

Maybe, but that is not going to happen THIS offseason. There will be a few just like last year that get left off. Who would you have rather had, Lowe or Wolf? Wolf 1 year 6M or Lowe 4/60?

          5. Mr North Jersey

I would rather have had Lowe. It’s too easy to say Wolf is better now after the year he has had.

          6. trs86

At 4/60+ why? Wolf sucks then you lost 6M and 1 year. Lowe sucks like he did this year and he is stuck like the Braves are finding out now.

          7. Mr North Jersey

“At 4/60+ why? Wolf sucks then you lost 6M and 1 year. Lowe sucks like he did this year and he is stuck like the Braves are finding out now.”

I am saying that looking at it from the perspective of back before season started.
Obviously now after the fact you would take Wolf but of course after the fact duh that is a no brainer decision.

          8. trs86

I picked Wolf last year over Lowe and Perez.

Why would you give either of them the money they got. I said last year that signing Perez was a mistake but cost wise signing Lowe to that contract was even MORE of a mistake than signing Perez. At least with Perez you are only out 36M instead of 60M.

          9. trs86

Uhm, 5/90 is overpaying. Maybe 2 years in he’ll all of a sudden becomes MUCH better than his career numbers?

          10. Mr North Jersey

Where would you slot Lackey then?
Is he not that good then?

          11. trs86

            15M range for 3-4 years not 18-20M for 5.

          12. trs86

Just because the Braves and Yankee’s vastly overpaid Lowe and Burnett does not mean that is now the market. Is the market for crappy pitchers that walk a lot 12M a year because Perez and Silva got that?

          13. Mr North Jersey

You still have to say what is the going rate for Lackey and why?

            Also who sets the rate?

          14. trs86

I told you his rate is about 3/45 to 4/60.

Why because he is a mid rotation non ace starter who has been injured to start the season two consecutive years. 18M would make him the 4th highest paid pitcher in the MLB. 90M total would make him the 20th highest contract of all time that’s assuming no signing bonuses.

  3. Mr North Jersey

Simple is Lackey a #2? Yes or No

If Yes Lackey is a #2 then do Mets need him? Yes or No
If No Lackey is no #2 then move to next potential suitor.

If Yes the Mets need him then what will it take to sign him?

    1. trs86

Yes the Mets need a mid-rotation starter. No they do not need to use almost all of their available resources on him and vastly overpay just because he is the only one on the market THIS season.

      1. Mr North Jersey

LoL but TRS is he a #2?

        1. trs86

You know I hate, #2, #3, blah blah.

Leiter was a #1 for us and it worked just fine.
Glavine was a #1 for us and it got us 1 game away.

          Lackey is a mid-rotation starter.

          1. Mr North Jersey

You get hung up on numbers too much over pay is a personal opinion. Weigh the plus or minus of what Lackey brings? Is Lackey automaticly the Mets #2 starter the day he puts a uniform on based on his history?

If he is then is he a legitimate starter you can put up against other teams 2nd best starter?

This is what you need to ask

  4. Mr North Jersey

“I told you his rate is about 3/45 to 4/60.

Why because he is a mid rotation non ace starter who has been injured to start the season two consecutive years. 18M would make him the 4th highest paid pitcher in the MLB. 90M total would make him the 20th highest contract of all time that’s assuming no signing bonuses.”

I am not saying sign any pitcher for 5 years so I just want to make that clear.

I am saying who sets the market and when is it set?

    1. trs86

      The NY teams. LOL.

  5. Mr North Jersey

What I was saying is last year comparing Lowe to Wolf I would of signed Lowe over Wolf but my decision is based on winning in 2009.

  6. Mr North Jersey

I guess if you just look at the most recent performance of a pitcher then the Mets should go out and resign Pedro Martinez also

  7. stickguy

the FA “market” is like any other auction. The price is set to whatever contract the high bidder feels like offering.
