Good morning to all my fellow Mets fans out there. Unfortunately I have sad news to report. According to the NJ.com website, Eighteen year old Mets minor league pitcher, Rafael Castro, collapsed and died Friday night at the Mets minor league complex in Caraboo, Venezuela. Castro. A native of Columbia , played for the past two season on the summer league team. He died of an apparent heart attack. Jeff Wilpon released a statement saying ” On behalf of the entire Mets organization, our thoughts and prayers are with the Castro family”. My thoughts and condolences go out to his family also .
On a happier note….
Happy Birthday to one of the most eclectic personalities this franchise has ever known -Pedro ” Petey” Martinez. He is 38 (1971) . I will always look on his tenure here quite fondly even though he couldn’t live up to his contract since he was so often injured, and I can’t blame the front office for not resigning him this past off season.
New York Mets claimed infielder Bill Spiers on waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers on October 25, 1994.
Kevin McReynolds granted free agency on October 25, 1994. Big Mac was at the end of his career and it was obvious he didn’t want to play for the Mets anyway so it was a win / win situation for both parties.
Today is the twenty third anniverseary of the GETS BY BUCKNER !!! GETS BY BUCKNER !!! play in the momentum changeing game six of the ’86 World Series.
And remember 162 days until the Mets open the 2010 season against Florida Marlins at Citi Field.
