Post Takes Aim at Phillies

This is actually some Facebook graffiti I drew for a friend a couple years ago. Enjoy!

This is actually some Facebook graffiti I drew for a friend a couple years ago. Enjoy!

In a pair of hilarious pair of NY Post “articles”, the newspaper takes some great pot-shots at all things Philadelphia. The articles are filled with quotes from people off the streets of New York, and I’ll leave most of the great material for you to read on their website, but here are a couple gems…

In “The Frillies are coming to town”, Alex Rusu of Gramercy says “Their most famous athlete is Rocky, and he’s fictional.”

In “Phanatic is a pain in the mascot”, in regards to the Phanatic Patrick O’Neill of the Bronx says “Mr. Met is even better than that — and Mr. Met is retarded.”

I realize that last one’s a shot at the Mets too…but it’s still hilarious.

The Philadelphia Inquirer took some much weaker pot-shots at the Yankees and New York City. The article “Yankees are a team Phils fans love to hate”,  quotes “The folks at www.bustedtees.com are selling T-shirts that feature a picture of Jesus and the phrase, “Jesus Hates the Yankees.” Nobody is printing “Jesus hates the Phillies” shirts, because the team doesn’t inspire that kind of contempt. Philadelphia has a much different image, the city and its baseball team more blue-collar and scrappy.”

Oh really, Philly Inquirer? The team doesn’t inspire contempt? ALL Philadelphia teams and their fans inspire great contempt. I only have to interview myself to solve that mystery. But a quick google search discredited the Inquirer before you can even say “Vick’s an Eagle, hide your beagle!” Looks like the Inquirer struck out looking!

hah

On the “who to root for” front, I’ve actually seen both Phillies and Yankees fans reject Mets fans who want to jump on their respective bandwagon. Now this I really don’t understand. Do fans of either team really think that they can sway who we root for? After all, 99% of us are rooting against one of the teams, rather than in favor of one.

front page of the inquirer sports section has a piece titled “mets fans in foul territory: choosing the lesser evil.”

See, they havent forgotten about us!

does it make me a bad person to root for poorly played baseball and a few injuries sprinkled in? Nothing life threatening of course!

Maybe Philadelphia hasn’t realized that they’re facing the YANKEES in the WS, not the Mets. Why would they need Mets articles on the front page (I read that article as well)? It’s ridiculous. The Mets haven’t played a game in weeks.

LOL, more media driven rivalry. Can they just let it alone and allow us to develop our own hate for the Phillies or Yankees. We have more than enough to go around. Next there will be a post in the Post about the Phillies obsessing about NY then an article in Philly about the Mets rooting against the Phillies….

“According to Baseball Analysts, the Mets spent the most money of any National League team from 2006 to 2008, during which they also won the most games of any team in the National League.”

“so, i don’t think it’s fair to suggest the Mets are cheap… instead, the question should be, while they clearly spend money and get results, are the spending their money in the best way so to get the best-possible results…”

So which is it MC? You are saying the Mets need to spend their money more wisely and money does not buy wins. However you also said that from 2006 to 2008 the Mets spent the most money and won the most games.

Carlos Beltran and Johan Santana have def been money well spent.

BTW, can we stay away from Holliday? I know he’s perfect for the Mets right now, but how many $10M+ position players are we gonna have? Especially considering we really need a #2 SP who absolutely will cost $10M+.

Where are our Werths and Vickie’s?

      1. trs86

Uhm playing RF with Frenchy and 1B with Murphy.

      2. GravediggerHebner

I half agree with TRS. I think “our Werth” is Francoeur.

But as far as “our Vickie” either it’s Pagan, or we don’t have “our Vickie” yet.

If it’s not Pagan, look for “our Vickie” to be acquired this off season. I’ll have a more specific suggestion as to who that person might be when I get a look at the list of those eligible for the rule 5 draft.

        1. CaseStreet

nice comparison w/ Pagan. Didn’t even think about it.

they were both drafted in 99. Pagan in the 4th and Vicky the 6th. Vicky is a year older.

Vicky has had 4 solid seasons, though while Pagan had his breakout season last year.

I know Crawford is the ideal fit for LF, but Pagan has a similar type of game. If Pagan could only play w/o the mental errors, he’d be a shoe-in for LF.

I’m I correct in thinking that the official list won’t be until 12 Dec. which is the deadline for teams to set their 40 man roster?

The cover of the post has victorino photo shopped with a cheerleader skirt.

Hilarious. But that’s the NY Post for you.

I can’t imagine the NY Post’s spin on any story if the Phils win it all. They’re gonna be eating a lot of crow….

Dude, both fan bases have identical opinions about each other, OK? This “nanny-nanny poo-poo” trash talking is just ridiculous. It’s ridiculous the Post had three staff writers work on that story, actually. That’s sad.

    1. prismo

I’m not sure how long you’ve been around sports (hopefully at least a few years since you write for a sports blog), but trash talking is FUN. It’s fun at every level – from fantasy sports with your friends to a friendly bball scrimmage to major newspapers duking it out with each other. Sports = entertainment; don’t get so uptight about it. ;)

      1. mattsmith

No, I agree with that, but at a certain level trash talking is absolutely absurd. Case point: New York Post.

As a Phillies fan, it’s fun to take pokes at our rivals (the Mets) and fans (you guys). But, the fun part about trash talking is when teams play head-to-head. If the Mets are down, it’s fun to rip into you guys. If the Phillies are down, I gotta “take it like a man” …

But this entire story is so ridiculously false. I mean, it’s as if a bunch of New York frat college buddies submitted it to the Post and they decided to publish it.

It’s not fun ripping into the culture of Philadelphia, or New York or any other place, when people don’t actually KNOW what it’s like to live in the city or be a fan.

In other words, trash-talking about the actual TEAM and on-field performance is fine. Ripping the cities and the people isn’t cool.

That’s why I don’t go around say “Mets fans are dumb because they smell like dirty New York whores” That’s just dumb, you know? And I know that’s a terrible example that makes no sense whatsoever, but that’s the point I’m trying to get across. The “name calling,” so to speak, is unnecessary.

To each his own, right? Everyone has an opinion … and every city has idiots.

    2. metsfan4decades

I can see the Philly fans being angered over the NY Post stories. But it’s NEW YORK Post so that’s to be expected.

That nanny-nanny poo-poo (and BTW, LOL), talk from Met fans being discussed here started a few days ago for two reasons:
      1. We’re waiting for the Hot Stove to start as our season was over long ago and looking forward to 2010. Until the WS ends, all we have is speculation and not much else being printed right now.

      2. We’re seeing these same stories across many blogs and we’re seeing many comments by Philly fans on the Mets within their own blogs. We just more or less are getting a chuckle out of it, as we haven’t been a blip on anyone’s radar concerning winning the NL east since June….

      1. mattsmith

Phillies fans like “rubbing it in” a little bit. This isn’t the World Series any Mets fan wanted to see, so, I think some morons will take advantage of the opportunity…

    3. CaseStreet

the Post is ridiculous, but they did do a better job at being ridiculous

  6. udontmesswthejohan

As Mets fans, I think that if we have learned anything over the past 3 years or so, it’s that the Phillies and their fans love to play the underdog role, even when they aren’t the underdogs. With Vegas and everyone else in baseball holding the Yankees up as big favorites, I can’t help but think this is playing right into Philly’s hands. Anyone who thinks this is going to be a cakewalk for the Stanks is crazy.

    1. mattsmith

Thank you. Where’s the “like” option?
The truth is, Yankees fans (and probably every other AL fan base) have this skewed opinion about NL teams, like nobody can “hang with” the AL. Heck, we beat last year’s top AL team, the Rays, and the morons in Boston and Bronxland said, ‘Well, you really didn’t beat the best team.” Well, OK then, here’s our chance.

By the way, for those that don’t know, I AM NOT some Phillies fan troll obsessed with leaving comments on your blog. I run the Phillies Phandom show “next door” :)

  7. GravediggerHebner

What does a picture of the Phanatic snorkeling have to do with this?
