Good morning my friends. And do you know what is significant about today? No ? Well today is the twenty third anniversary of our beloved New York Mets WINNING OUR SECOND ( and so far last !) WORLD SERIES TITLE !! Okay for those of you that didn’t know this it is time to turn in you Mets fan membership card !!! I remember this day fondly. I was a freshman in Vernon Township High School in Vernon New Jersey, and I came home from school both happy and nervous about the coming game that night . My father who was also a major Mets fan ( he auditioned for the team during their open try outs in ’61) let me stay up late for every game and even though our relationship right now is non-existent, I do thank him for it. All I know is the feeling of dread when the Boston Red Sox came out of the gate and scored three runs off of a tired Ron Darling. But obviously my my dread was short lived because the Mets clawed their way back against pitcher Bruce Hurst and eventually we won 6-5. but still I can remember vividly Jesse Orosco striking Marty Barrett out to win the World Series !! I remember the pile up on the mound !!! I remember the celebration in the clubhouse !!! I remember the jubilation !!! I wished I was there !!!! Thanks for the memories guys – it was one of the happiest moments of my misspent youth.

And now onto the INFAMY !!!
First off my warmest birthday greetings go out to a friend of all Mets fans – the man who I always felt was the tenth man on the team even though he never had an at bat for our club – announcer Ralph Kiner (1922) .
Third baseman for the ’63 team – Pumpsie Green is 76 (1933)
Awful reserve outfielder for the ’78 & ’79 team – Gil Flores is 57Â (1952)
One time catching coach and now Mets minor league manager -Tom Nieto is 49 (1960)
Top pitching prospect - Jon Niese is 23 (1986). Yup he was born on the day of our last world series ( hopefully its a omen !!) Get well soon Jon – we might need you badly this season !!!
New York Mets released one time closer for the Milwaukee Brewers – Bob McClure on October 27, 1988.
And remember to look back today with fondness and just know our time will come again sometime really soon ( hopefully !)Â And also remember there are only 160 more games until the Mets host the Florida Marlins on Opening Day at Citi Field

“Get well soon, Jon”
Amen, to that! He was looking real good once he had that time early in the season to work on his pitches in AAA.
I wish I hadn’t been only 4 years old on this day in 1986. I had no clue what baseball was at the time, I think I was obsessed with Voltron and Transformers at the time instead. Ugh. They better win another one in my lifetime… though it’s tough to hold onto hope these days.

Man such a young life to have a terminal disease, I am sorry for you. At 27 you are already struggling to hold on to hope. LOL. Come on man. There is plenty of time for us to win one in your LIFEtime.

Hope is tough in the short term, but it will return once Omar is shown the door.

That’s just silly. I am no longer an Omar supporter either but we can still win one with him here. We could have and should have in 2006. Lets give a dying man his last chance here. He knows it’s put up or shut up for him in 2010, if he does not win he’s gone and you can have hope again. So actually for you, you should have a lot of hope.

With the signing of Ollie last off-season, my final shred of confidence in Omar was shot to hell.
“Could have and should have”?
Garbage. Yes, I agree that we were a better team, but even the worst team can win 4 out of a 7 game stretch. That’s what makes the playoffs more of a crapshoot than anything. The Cardinals had one of those 4 out of 7 stretches, and we didn’t. Simple as that.

Of course the playoffs are a crap shoot. So you have no confidence that Omar can get us into the playoffs? LOL.

Like I said, my confidence in Omar is zero. We’ll see, he may wind up impressing me… LOL

Hmm, so in 2007 when the team was obviously the best team in the NL and then choked that was Omar’s fault?
Or the fact that even thought the BP was terrible we were within one game in 2008 and lost and that was Omar’s fault?
Utimately it has and will be blamed on Omar but to say we have no confidence that HE can do HIS part to get us into the playoffs is a little extreme.

“but to say we have no confidence ”
I said *I* have no confidence. You’re free to think how you want, I wasn’t making any broad statements about other fans’ feelings.
The choke wasn’t his fault. Absolutely agreed. And these bums need to step up and show us that they can actually play decent baseball in September and get over the stain of ’07. But it’s a shared responsibility over the past few years between them and Omar.
In ’08 he could have looked to bolster the bullpen mid-season, instead we got Luis Ayala closing games for us.
A delicious 4 year extension for a declining 2B about to have surgery on both knees when speed has always been his game? Hurray!
Last off-season he filled one hole on the team, while having us come into April with Murphy in LF and no credible backup for an aging Delgado. Not to mention coming into this season with a seriously overworked Pelfrey being thrown into the 2 spot and a piece of garbage signed for $36MM to be our #3…
I will give him credit: I thought the Putz trade was a nice move (assuming that Omar didn’t know Putz had the bone spur at the time of the trade). Didn’t work out in the end, but I liked it at the time.

Sometimes it is the hot team and not necessarily the best team that wins. But we came damn close. Pitching trumps hitting every time and that’s exactly what happened to us in 2006 post season. We lost two experienced post season pitchers coming into the NLDS and were probably lucky to get to the NLCS. Endy bailed Ollie out and if it wasn’t for Heilman, who knows what would have happened?

Yeah, and Weaver and Suppan were monsters in that series. I still get filled with anger anytime I see one of them pitching.

Agreed, Rusty. As expected, once he left Dave Duncan and went to Milwaukee, his ERA and WHIP have been increasing steadily. He pitched way over his head in that postseason, but he got his ring out of it. Ugh.

Actually, he pitched great in that series, but the rest of that postseason was mediocre for him.

i’m still scratching my head on the John Lackey situation – unless this is a ploy to try to lower his price tag …. if it i true – so much for wilpons statement of no spending restraints

Have the Wilpons said they are not going after Lackey? Omar? Relax, everything right now is reporters desperate for a story.

Honestly, Rusty, unless it’s from the mouths of the Wilpons or Omar, I’m not going to believe any of these Lackey rumors. Remember, this is what the hot stove season is all about: rumors to fill air time until things actually happen.

Amen.
And even though I was lucky enough to be a bonifide Met fan for that magical ’86 year……it was just too long ago now.
Here’s to 2010.

Oh wow, Rusty – your Dad tried out for the first ever NY Met team? Very cool.
My Dad was offered a contract with the Brooklyn Dodger minor league club in the mid 50′s. He turned it down. He said he was smart enough to know that even though he was a hell of a SS, he couldn’t hit worth a lick and would probably never have made it to the ML.

yeah my dad was a power hitting catcher on the sandlots inthe brownsville section of brooklyn a scout invited him to the tryouts at the old parade grounds but my dad was a left handed catcher which allegedly is not conducive to the position so they tried him in the outfield where he had no speed. My dad – who I am now estranged from claimed he was offered a contract to play sub class a ball he went for a couple of weeks then gave up – I dont know the validity to the last part of the story

Well dang – sorry to hear that and I know the feeling.
Family – as they say, you only get to pick your friends in this life – family comes with the package.
Still an awesome story though – trying out for the first ever NY Met team.

I remember when Boston took that early lead…I’m thinking the same thing I’m sure many fans – and players were thinking -’we didn’t come back in Game 6 only to have it end this way’. And sure enough, we answered those runs and then some. Final score though was 8-5.
The NY Mets are the only team in modern history to come within one strike of losing a World Series before recovering to become World Champions. Hey, if we can do that, then anything is possible.
Can’t wait for the 2010 season.
