Here’s an early Friday afternoon Hot Stove update for everyone…
The Phillies exercised their $9 mil option on Cliff Lee.
The Diamondbacks exercized their $8.5 mil option on Brandon Webb.
The Brewers traded JJ Hardy to the Twins for former Met Carlos Gomez.
The White Sox bought out Jermaine Dye’s 2010 option, making him a free agent.

Thanks Prismo. My computer is as slow as Reyes’ recovery.
And now what everyone is waiting for, my opinion on each.
Lee: It will be interesting to see if Lee can continue his dominance AND if the Phillies can afford to keep him.
Webb: I can’t see much interest from the Mets prospective unless it’s midyear.
Hardy and Gomez: Not sure what that means. Hardy fell fast and perhaps Gomez is being overrated.
Dye: IF he signs cheap for 1 year and allows the Mets to concentrate on other areas then I would consider it.

I’m not surprised by any of the options stuff, but once again a trade leaps out of the woodwork completely unspoken of beforehand (to the best of my knowledge) with Gomez-Hardy.
Man I love the hot stove.

Great move my Minny. Hardy has excellent D at SS and I’ve read that he should have some type of comeback w/ the bat. I know the guys at USS Mariner really wanted him.
It’s actually win-win. Gomez is one of the best CFers in the game and an excellent replacement for Cameron considering they already have a good hitting team. Can’t hit, but I’m guessing the Brew-Crew thinks that’ll come. And the Twins had a surplus of OFers and a serious need for a SS.
I wonder if Willy had any input in this. Either way, it’s a very nice trade for both teams.

I’m a little surprised the Brewers didn’t get back another piece in addition to Gomez. Hardy, despite his inconsistencies, has proven that he is a legit HR threat.

Not sure if the Halladay topic has any more juice right now, but the other day I was saying how I would make my highest offer in trade for him equal to (in terms of prospect rank evaluations) what the Phils sent for Lee.
Well the new BA prospect rankings are out, so the current equivalent offer would be:
2-Wilmer Flores
3-Fernando Martinez
4-Ike Davis
10-Juan Urbina
Would you give that up for one year of Halladay and the possibility of signing him long term?

That’s potentially our 2012 corner OFers and 1B. Never heard of Urbina.
IDK if I would do this.
Also to consider is that Lee had a much cheaper contract than what we’d have to pay to keep Halladay.
BTW, who’s Juan Urbina? First time I heard of him.

along w/ the contract issue.
Maybe Phillie had to pay so much because there was lots of teams in on Lee (affordable contract) whereas the Mets may not have much competition if Halladay pulls a Johan and says he’ll waive the NTC only if he gets a nice extension.
So maybe the Mets won’t have to pay as much in prospects.

Uget? Urbina’s relative. Young pitcher we signed on the IFA market.
But as for those prospects it’s so fluid I don’t think that it would take that much.

Urbina is a LHP, and due to the way the ranking order coincidence works, the only pitcher the Mets would send away.
Wilmer Flores seem so far away that I find it hard to worry about him possibly turning into the next Miguel Cabrera or whatever. FMart seems a bit closer, but is still a constant injury issue. Davis hurts me the most.
The aspect I find most appealing of this offer is that the Mets would only be sending one pitcher. With Santana and Halladay taking up huge sums of money, the Mets will need Mejia, Holt, Niese and their brethren around to compete to be cheap 3-5 starters for the next 6 or so years. That’s what makes it at all conceivable for me to do.

I’m not sure on the rules, but Urbina was just signed in July and is only 16. Can a guy just signed 4 months ago even be traded? My recollection is that he cannot.

Surprised to see Flores at #2, though he did not embarrass himself against much older guys.
Mildly surprised to see Mejia shoot up the list during a year with injuries.
Expected to see either Niewenhuis or Valdespin in the 10 spot rather than Urbina.
My expectation was probably that the top 4 would have been reversed. This goes to show, though, how scouts do not love Davis because he easily had the best season among the top prospects and did it at higher levels. (in fairness, FMart played very well in AAA before playing not so well at Citi — and easily could’ve still been #1)

I think that this is some how tied to what the Mets WANT people to view. I know it is supposed to be independent but I wonder if it actually is?
To me I would rank Fmart, Davis and Niese ahead of any of Mejia, Flores, or Holt.

I agree with your ranking preference with the possible exception of Niese. BA weighs upside, probability and proximity to the majors among other things. While Niese scores highly on the latter two I don’t think he scores nearly as high as the others in upside.
The top of the Mets list sure favors upside to major league readiness this season.
I also agree that the list reflects, in part, what the Mets want people to view. Afterall, much of the data used to develop the rankings comes from people within the system. I know they speak with the development people in all of the systems as part of their process.
I suspect that if you asked another team’s scout to rank Mets prospects you’d get a different list — maybe with names not even on this list.

It looks like he did (I think for the second year). I think the process is that he drafts the piece but there is input from the editors on the rankings, as well.

My guess for next season is that Havens is the next big jumper from this list (there are several not on the list I expect to jump). I am confident that Holt can improve his status also and am hopeful that Mejia can retain his. I am fearful of declines for Thole, Tejada (whom I expect to decline a bit) and Davis.
Flores is a real wildcard for next year. He’s still pretty young and I expect the Mets to promote him again.
Jeffry Marte sure did take a hit in status from 2008-2009. But he was also pushed hard and at a young age. I expect him to elevate his status if he remains in Savannah.

I don’t think it’s necessarily a reflection of his talent, I just don’t envision many 20 year olds performing well against AAA pitchers.
